The half-elves are not a species on their own. I'm not sure if Tiefling are either. I'm not familiar enough with dragonborn but I'll concede that they should have an entry. The drow duergar and orcs have a history as being obstacles and the enemies for PCs. And not just for humans, but for elves...

So I would accept all that (roles + race) along with (1) A species entry, sidebar for either side (2) A few specialized entries that were species specific. (3) A CR adjustment for the species if necessary What you have without that is half-assed attempt.

I think you misunderstood my original post. The arguments were that roles are more useful, that narration is what is needed to differentiate races, that ppl don't need a statblock for a drow guard, an orc guard, a duergar guard.. etc It's like posters suddenly suffered from 4e statblock amnesia...

The humanoids races had particular stat blocks with specific descriptors separate to the roles at the back of the MM. With this new MM those particular roles specific to race per their stat blocks are no longer there. It requires more work for the DM. Also those descriptors were evocative...

Well it's a combination of 4e and 5e (2014). As for your queries, in 5e the weapon and armour worn affect the stat block. Abilities remain.

When the justification is one guard is the same as another, it is well to point out that previous MM didn't just showcase guards of x race.

Seems like we've already forgotten why people appeared to like the 4e monster stat blocks....I'm pretty sure it wasn't because of the narrative.

The only Orc issue I have is that the Americans totally screwed me out of a second Warcraft movie. What's wrong with you lot? Even with a strong Chinese attendance we didn't have enough for a sequel.

There are things from older editions that just cannot be beat - 2e for fluff, 3e for mechanics and 4e for interesting combat options. These newer editions keep your older books evergreen and that is a pretty cool silver lining. ;)
