I'm not sure, I suspect this may be subjective. As a player for me it depends on two things - the eloquence of the GM and how much time my head space is out of the fiction dealing with the meta.

I'm not familiar with RuneQuest but can you please provide an example by what you believe is more grounded about the PC expression or action resolution in RQ? I suspect it may be a lower magic setting too than D&D.

Exactly, I think people misinterpreted my comment as these are universally applicable or that absolute failure was off the table. That is not the case. I will say that I do not consider myself as running a Living World but more a World in Motion - and I came to this belief from conversations in...

Ah I see. I generally use these tools in increments of 5 as is common for 5e and actual failure is always on the cards. I posted upthread an example of how I ran the Persuasion check for one of our scenes at the table. Standard failure was part of it.

I can see instances where this could clash. Just from my perception, using the idea of picking a lock Success with a complication - You pick the lock but someone on the other side of the door calls out. Perhaps a GM who runs a Living World would have issues with this if they are indeed...

I actually really enjoy Fail Forwards, Success with Complications and Degrees of Failure/Success. As a DM you can allow for an increase in stakes (I'm thinking like poker), take the story in interesting directions and if the players are aware of the mechanics involved beforehand it elevates the...

D&D 5E (2014) Tyranny of Dragons - mechanising the Scorecard

Thanks. We have just finished up with the 4th Council Meeting and the table definitely enjoyed the player-facing Scorecard and having to produce arguments to change the Councilors minds on opinions in the past while also influenced by the rewards gained by each councilors at the various...

The reason I introduced new tools was because there were parts of the game I wasn't enjoying not because any of my players had issues.

D&D 5E (2014) Tyranny of Dragons - mechanising the Scorecard

As our table is approaching the end of the Tyranny of Dragons adventure path while concurrently running Storm King’s Thunder (STK), Out of the Abyss (OotA), Descent into Avernus (DiA), Rime of the Frost Maiden (RotFM) etc as a possible prelude to Doomed Forgotten Realms, I decided to do what...

I'd say sandbox play can or cannot adjust to the levels of the PCs. It's not a requirement or a defining trait. Open world with a menu selection for adventures is the defining trait for a sandbox IMO. Tag lines such as Living World or World in Motion provide their own requirements.

Well I should have also added that if the dude rocks up insisting to play a Pacific Islander in an agreed upon Viking-themed game that to me is not a genuine request. I'd also show them the door.

No one is thinking you're a whackadoodle nutjob but asking to play x non-viking person in a specifically themed viking campaign to see if the person will exercise their veto power only to chastise them for not allowing "you" to play against themed type is not particularly useful or informative...

I suggest you stop trying to fit your particular preferences into everyone else's games and specifically their imaginary themed games (like a Viking Campaign). You will be much happier.

Thanks, so just to be clear you take an AP apart for content. As in you don't follow the AP timeline or sequence of events once they engage with the storyline or as you refer to it option?

Thumbs up for this comment on the determination of XP for similar methods used for different CR monsters. This is a fine point to consider for tables using XP.

Following on from my recent conversations with @pemerton which touched on GM-centric play I thought the below may help with others to define/analyse their game. The below are different sandboxes each with their own level of GM-centric play. There are probably others feel free to add - I'm not...

Sure if I had planned it then yes I would definitely be guilty of GM-driven play, although planned social encounters which are missed is not something that really is common enough to speak of. Honestly the library example in my mind was if I thought about it during or after play as something...
