What Player Abilities Should the Game Encourage?

Odd that roleplaying or immersion in the story didnt make the list but "aggressive roleplaying" did. Wheres the option for speaking to the king, treating npcs as more then story hooks, or finding out what the thief really want so that you can pay the ransom without bloodshed? Wheres the option...

Legends and Lore April 2, 2012

If the DM lets you be a 3rd level high lord, then he must have rules to deal with this? I personally would start a character out as a noble, and let him slowly get to king (by say 10th level). But if I wanted him to start as a powerful king at 0th level, thats fine.... but I don't think the...

Super D&D: We don't need any stinkin' reality!

I personally think magic items are not nearly as fantastic, interesting or powerful as they should be (Im not talkin about +x, Im talking about cool powers and sentient, cursed, wild items). By 10th level Im usually having to make all of the items myself because weve already used the artifacts...

    The WotC Polls

Flabbergasted how many people even pay attention to the polls. The polls exist as an advertising excercise, to get you talking and interested in the game. No one with any experience in stats would think a public poll of this type (no matter how its worded) could reflect the fan bases views...

    Hex or grid?

When 3e came out, my group started dabbling with minis and grids. When 4e came out, I bought a projector, mounted it on my ceiling pointing down on my table and every encounter had great photoshopped tiles. Then came the great 4e plague that for some inexplicable reason caused D&D to stop...

Paladins: Lawful Good only and other restrictions

Completely Agree. I think Arcana Unearthed from Monte Cooke has a great compromise. In it, he introduced the "champion" class. You could be a champion of various causes like light, good, darkness, justice, death etc. I propose under a model like this the champion of "law and good" would be...

short adventures or books with ideas?

Thanks everyone for all your replies! Nice to have some sources. I must say that "Eureka: 501 Adventure Plots to Inspire Game Masters" is reeeaaallly good, I prefer to write my own adventures, but I want something to base em off to make them interesting. A cool plot theme, idea, or a cool...

Throwing down the Tyranny of the Spellcaster.

What if the martial character say can swing that sword 3 times a round but the wizard can only cast said spell once? Does that make it closer to equivalence to the spell? What if the wizard can cast that spell but only once or twice a day, but the martial character can keep slamming his...

short adventures or books with ideas?

thank you, I have adventure I, I will look for the part 2. As far as the system goes, it can be any system or no system as long as its somewhat fantasy based

short adventures or books with ideas?

Hi Im looking for adventures. I really like Paizo adventures, but one thing I abhor about them is how looong they are. I am planning a campaign and am more looking for 1-2 page seed ideas that can give me hooks/ideas that I can build on. I really liked Alderac Entertainments D20 pamphlets...

Throwing down the Tyranny of the Spellcaster.

I was commenting on your comparison of the Level 10 fighter equivalent to a level 2 wizard as if they would somehow be equal in power or that your proposed solution would be more balanced then the current situation. In prior editions, a level 2 fighter ALREADY blows a level 2 wizard out of the...

    D&D 5E (2014) What 5E needs is a hundred classes

I disagree with OP. WHile I have no problems with lots of classes, I think classes should be large, customizable and flexible. Arcana Evolved is a great example of this. Class witch had 5 different types of witches you could be. The champion (like a paladin) could be a champion of 8...

Throwing down the Tyranny of the Spellcaster.

None of the above. I think spellcasters were generally close to balanced in 2e and 3e, with some exceptions that could be fixed. I think the over reaction to caster/martial balancce as seen in 4th is a reason as to why it turned my group off, made it feel like NOT D&D, and helped make...

D&D 4E WotC, Please stop the deliberate obfuscation of 4e concepts in 5e!!

I dont like the jargon or the extra codifying of so many things. I understand that we need some terms (HP, Attack of Opportunity, Daily, ect) but I feel 4e went to far in simplying the content and helped make it less interesting and magical to me. For example the book was full of "encounter...

L&L: These are not the rules you're looking for

I am not 100% sure if your being sarcastic here. I see #3 as a suitable option and #1 and #2 as examples of whiney players who might be close to getting kicked out of my gaming group. The example you provided had a cleric summoning undead, a not uncommon occurrence in D&D. As long as your...

    Paladins Should Not Cast Spells

Ok... I agree again, but before we go to far can I get a concession from you? Can wizards in 5th get spells back again? lol

    Paladins Should Not Cast Spells

As someone who loves and still plays 3e/pathfinder, I agree. It makes more sense to have the paladin have some magical powers, and not spells.

    M&M - Warriors and Warlocks

For my games - Most (80%) of my combats need to be under 15 minutes. 1 combat every couple of adventures may be a half hour long. 1 combat every 10 levels can be be 45 minutes long. Anything more then that is unacceptable.
