    D&D 5E (2014) Modeling Uncertainty

They tell me what they want to do, and I tell them if they need to make a check. I try to keep them in the role-play mentality where they focus on actions without trying to meta-game.

D&D 5E (2014) Capricious Home Rules and DM Pet Peeves

I really like your house-rules for healing, in particular. How would you say they have worked out in your game? How have your players taken to them? What are the affects you've seen in terms of the adventuring day?

D&D 5E (2014) Tales from the Yawning Portal: A better title would be "Nezram's tales of adventure".

Yeah I noticed. Means I have a captive audience with my response. :P

D&D 5E (2014) Tales from the Yawning Portal: A better title would be "Nezram's tales of adventure".

Even though my and my players might be playing through Undermountain, we might still talk about that time we were in the Tomb of Horrors. It's more like football fans at a football match, talking about other great football matches. Besides, not all the patrons of the Yawning Portal are...

D&D 5E (2014) Do Arcane Abilities work when bound and gagged?

Maybe I am not understanding the question, but in 5th ed. each spell has requirements listed, including whether there are verbal and/or somatic components. So if there are somatic components, they can't be cast if the wizard has her hands bound. If there are verbal components required, they...

D&D 5E (2014) Eliminating darkvision from most races

Yeah, the more I think about it, the more I really, really like low-light vision for elves, dwarves, gnomes, etc., where dim light is like bright light, but darkness is still darkness, and the only player races that have darkvision are drow and snirvneblin (and I don't let my players play drow...

    D&D 5E (2014) Modeling Uncertainty

This is the way I handle skill checks. I'm not claiming it's the best way, but it works for me and my group (this is going to be longish, but hopefully worth it). The only roll done behind the screen is an insight check. If they succeed, then they are told correct information. If they fail...

    D&D 5E (2014) Modeling Uncertainty

I don't hate your solution. There might be something there. But two possible problems. It might add too much extra complexity for a simple knowledge skill roll. Your players also need to know about the rule and how it works for them to get the full meaning and experience of it. The other...

D&D 5E (2014) Eliminating darkvision from most races

Could work. I am really intrigued by Caliburn101's suggestion of bringing low-light vision back into the game and distinguishing it from darkvision. I'm not going to change vision rules on my players mid-campaign, but I think I will try it out when they start their next campaign.

D&D 5E (2014) Eliminating darkvision from most races

Oh, nice suggestion. I might have to try this. So how would dim light work exactly? Would a human have disadvantage on perception checks, and low-light creatures not? Are there any other mechanics differences?

D&D 5E (2014) Eliminating darkvision from most races

Just wanted to pop back in and say thanks to all who have offered various opinions here. Some of you have somewhat convinced me that there are other ways I can emphasize the limitations of darkvision, that plus the fact that humans, halflings, and dragonborn in the party may necessitate light...

D&D 5E (2014) Eliminating darkvision from most races

My players have it too easy sooo ... I'm only seeing positives here. ;)

D&D 5E (2014) Eliminating darkvision from most races

Dangerous monsters (undead and other evil things) lurking in ancient dungeons can see in the dark, of course.

D&D 5E (2014) Eliminating darkvision from most races

Sounds great to me! :) Creepy monsters in the dark that can see you but you can't see them until you light the torch ... oh yeah.

D&D 5E (2014) Tales from the Yawning Portal: A better title would be "Nezram's tales of adventure".

That is not a bad idea, but I personally prefer the Yawning Portal idea. Partly that's because I have no problem imagining, as others have said, that these stories have been told and retold in a famous tavern where many adventurers and locals gather. I also want to run a main campaign with my...

D&D 5E (2014) Eliminating darkvision from most races

To clarify a bit, there are specifically two things that I feel are lost with widely prevalent racial darkvision: 1. The ambiance of storytelling as a DM when the characters venture into some ancient, lost, deep dungeon that is pitch black. Sure we can still say that the characters only see in...

D&D 5E (2014) Eliminating darkvision from most races

For me, the idea of color-coordinating traps is a clever idea, but more of a gimmick that gets old fast if overplayed. It really doesn't solve my problem. If you don't mind widely prevalent darkvision in your games, go for it. But I do, and I'm just wondering if there are any gamebreaking...

D&D 5E (2014) Eliminating darkvision from most races

Thanks for the reply, but I understand those rules. I know the distance limits and that perception checks still have disadvantage. Even with those limitations though, it still removes the ambiance I want in a dungeon crawl. For example, being lowered in to the well in the Yawning Portal and only...

D&D 5E (2014) Eliminating darkvision from most races

When I DM, one of the things I really like to establish is mood and setting for my players. I want to play up the dread and unknown when they venture into a dark, damp dungeon. I want them to almost hear the scraping of the flint and the crackling fire as they light their torch. I want them to...

Tales From The Yawning Portal - 7 Classic Dungeons Updated To 5E!

I'm curious about how they are going to set this up, but what I might do is have my group create characters for a main campaign, and whenever they want a break from the main campaign they can go to the Yawning Portal to hear the barkeep tell stories he's heard of other adventurers trying to find...
