Blowing it All Up and Starting Over

Argh. This is one of my biggest griefs. It was a huge mistake to go fiddle around with the FR campaign world and timeline. When they did, and when they moved the timeline up 100 years or so, they lost a lot of iconic characters who were original to the campaign world. They also lost a lot of...

D&D 5E (2014) Two magical items that give pluses to AC stack?

Yep, thanks. I was thinking the same spell effect didn't stack, only their duration overlapped. But that's only true if it's from the same spell, apparently.

    D&D 5E (2014) Alternative Wildshape Rules

You have a personal dislike of the druid wild-shape; that's why you proposed your changes. And your changes do nerf the class, which is part of the point of your changes. And I mean that's cool, but not everyone shares your dislike of the class abilities. And it would be a real shame for some...

D&D 5E (2014) Two magical items that give pluses to AC stack?

Happy new year's! I'm stuck at work tonight, so I'd thought I'd ask this question that came up. A single character has a +1 ring of protection and a +2 bracers of defense. Is their total bonus to AC +3, or is it treated somewhat like benefits from spells and it is just the highest bonus of the...

    D&D 5E (2014) Alternative Wildshape Rules

I don't hate the concept, although I would finagle with some of the numbers, and give more HP for differing beast shapes. But ultimately the problems you point out aren't really big problems, as far as I'm concerned. Since it's your wife's first time playing, there is naturally going to be some...

D&D 5E (2014) RAW: Spell attack rolls modifiers stack?

To be fair, these questions are not really relevant to the question at hand, and they side-step the rules-question. It may not be likely that both weapons are discovered by a party in a single campaign, or given to the same player, but both things are totally possible.

D&D 5E (2014) RAW: Spell attack rolls modifiers stack?

I like this answer. The player is not using both as a foci at the same time if two magical items give bonuses in magical attacks. But I think pdegan2814 nails it with his answer. They are not both given out the same kind of bonuses, it seems.

D&D 5E (2014) Need help in picking a character to fit this party

It sort of depends on if the party wants to be perfectly balanced or not. I usually tell my players they should just pick whatever seems fun to play. I'm not so interested in a perfectly balanced party, myself. If it happens, it happens, but I and my group often like to focus on the fun of...

D&D 5E (2014) How would you handle a healing economy?

Totally agree. My goal is to have those rules and my world fit together. I'm using the rules as a tool, not a master. But I'm after the lightest touch I can make while being true to my world.

D&D 5E (2014) How would you handle a healing economy?

That is if I go with the MM entries as canon in my world or not, which is the very thing I am questioning/considering. :) But yes, you're right!

Thanks all for the comments and suggestions. I think this discussion has helped me clarify how I want to handle the situation.

D&D 5E (2014) Changing published campaign settings that improve them

Have you ever made a change to a published campaign setting that you felt made the setting markedly better, either in a small or big way? I know this is subjective, but I'm talking about changes that you think most other people would agree are improvements. In my own example, I run the pre-Time...

D&D 5E (2014) How would you handle a healing economy?

I think the second-highest answer in the link you provided is helping me get my answer. I had missed this, but according to the 5th ed. PHB, clerics with true healing power given by their god are truly rare, and "Not every acolyte or officiant at a temple or shrine is a cleric...True clerics are...

D&D 5E (2014) How would you handle a healing economy?

I appreciate this, but I'm still not sure if this solves all of my concerns. For example, in the scenario of Neverwinter and the "spell-scarred," the campaign guide says, "Helm's Hold has surged in population in recent years. Many of the new residents are spell-scarred, having come -- or been...

D&D 5E (2014) How would you handle a healing economy?

Let's say I want to run a campaign that uses the Neverwinter spellscarred scenario (or any kind of plague or curse, it doesn't really matter, but I'm using this for sake of example). Now, in the city, many people have contracted this plague (or curse, or whatever). They are sent to Helm's Hold...

D&D 5E (2014) is the dodge action broken?

Different style of DMing then, which is totally fine. My monsters definitely fight differently depending on how intelligent they are. A highly intelligent monster is going to use the best tactics they know. They also will try to flee if things are not going their way. Less intelligent...

D&D 5E (2014) Has anyone ever been part of a group that has booted the DM?

I wasn't booted when I started as a DM years ago, but I probably should have been. I was so bad. :p

D&D 5E (2014) is the dodge action broken?

Skeletons have an INT of 6. This is one of those areas where I make smart monsters use better tactics than dumb monsters. I would have skeletons blindly attack for longer than a smart monster. Anyway, there are plenty of good ways to use dodge. Let's say you are a melee fighter without much...
