Heritage of Dragonsreach (UPDATED September 4, 2007)

Storms and krakens and dragonturtles, oh my! As the vast tentacles wrapped themselves around the hull of the Fey Wind, Roland began to give a heartening oratory. Hedrin blasted the tentacle nearest him with his eldritch energy, and was promptly snatched up by it in a nearly unbreakable grip. I...

    Questions You Would've Asked

Repeated for emphasis. 16. Why isn't there a goshdarned Greyhawk setting hardcover book for those of us who aren't interested in Living Greyhawk but like the setting?

Craziest combat move by a PC

It's not really crazy - I guess I'm not very imaginative during combat. But a couple of sessions ago in our Eberron campaign I had my Valenar fighter/scout jump up on a table to fight some Aereni Stillborn. I was pretty pleased with myself for even thinking of jumping on the table. After a few...

Sagiro's Story Hour Returns (new thread started on 5/18/08)

Yes, I'm beginning to see that the probable reason I don't get reader comments on my story hours is because they're all told in first person narrative. A couple of the other players also do journal entries in those story hours but they don't post as regularly as I do. Which means readers only...

    Ghost Rider?

"Almost" is the operative word here. I think there's an assumption that the studios avoid pre-screenings because they know their movies are bad. But I think more studios these days are starting to avoid pre-screenings because they don't want to lose the element of surprise. I don't expect...

John Carter of Mars becomes animated by Pixar

I don't know who wrote all the stuff Gomez was quoting, but the person who was worrying about Pixar's style conflicting with the source material hasn't seen enough of Pixar's work. They gained fame from the success of movies like Toy Story and Monsters, Inc., but they're capable of a much wider...

A Journey to the Sea (Greyhawk) UPDATED 7 February 2008

Letter #38 We spent another night safely resting in our camp outside the maze. Ninad had found an amulet among the detritus inside. He discovered it would be useful to someone like Thor or myself who can transform into animal shapes. It was given to me, since I've only lately learned to take...

    Non-Boring Cleric Ideas

I've done an elf cleric/Order of the Bow Initiate, and it was a lot of fun. It was definitely cool to stand in the back and shoot/cast at everything while the rest of the group went toe-to-toe. I don't think my character went into hand-to-hand combat once in three levels. I agree with...

What is the preferrable option after a PC death?

As a player, I couldn't really choose any of the options. It depends on the circumstances. If I'm playing in an Eberron campaign then I'm going to assume that raising/resurrecting a PC is unlikely and plan on rolling up a new PC. If I'm in the Forgotten Realms then my attitude may be different...

You Don't Talk Shop at the Dinner Table

We don't have to ban any topics at our gaming tables because we're all pretty much in agreement on most topics. But the general tendency is not to discuss anything of import during games. We'd rather talk about tv shows, other games, or pets.

    Licensing of Hobbits and Orcs

At this point I think it makes sense for WotC to keep halflings and not try to gain the use of the name hobbit. They've made a pretty concerted effort to differentiate their halfling race from the image of Tolkien's hobbits and the two have become quite different. As the wikipedia entry points...

Sagiro's Story Hour Returns (new thread started on 5/18/08)

I've got a question regarding the Story Hour itself. I maintain four Story Hours for my group, and no non-players ever post in them. The players don't post in them often, either. Someone is obviously reading them judging by the view count, but no one is making comments. But I see an awful lot...

A Journey to the Sea (Greyhawk) UPDATED 7 February 2008

Letter #38 continues We returned to the maze this morning after a quiet night in camp. We found that Thor's summoned thoqqua had been sliced in half, though we couldn't tell by what. The two minotaurs we'd slain were gone but the lightning lizards had been left where they fell. On our way back...

The Collected Journals of Artemis Heuw Cannith

Caelen writes home From: Caelen Siorath Sharn, Breland To my family; Once again we've delayed our trip to Gatherhold. But it was a more worthwhile delay than caring for a diseased gang of thieves. The human and Dalia found more information about the false priest who took the enchanted key...

Demons in the Desert When it beheld us the nalfeshnee ceased its ominous chortling and asked if we sought converse or battle. I doubt that any of my friends could think of any subject on which they would wish discourse with a demon. Nor could I. Nekaya exclaimed that the demon should return...

    re-rolling 1's

My GMs sometimes allow re-rolling of 1s during character creation. But usually we're allowed to keep rolling until we end up with a set of ability scores we're happy with, so 1s aren't really an issue. Re-rolling of 1s for hit points is a regular house rule with most of the GMs I play with...
