What happens when you cast a spell?

Examples, please! This I gotta see. :D

    Roleplaying your character in combat

I hadn't thought about this as a component of the situation, but you're right. I also play in campaigns that remove or significantly downplay the likelihood of PC death. And it does make it a lot easier to use sub-optimal tactics in combat if I don't have to worry that my roleplaying choices are...

    Roleplaying your character in combat

Like you, shilsen, I tend to try to roleplay my character in combat situations and do what I think that character would do, not what is necessarily the most tactically sound choice. Naturally I can't separate myself from my character completely, nor can I turn off my knowledge of the game...

Doctor Who (Season 4) - Voyage of the Damned (SPOILERS)

True! Watched it again last night with a group of friends, and they all agreed it seemed Poseidon-like. But maybe you Brits aren't as familiar with that film, or maybe you're just too young. The original film is from the '70s. ;)

HBO's ROME Series: D&D campaign possible?

Somehow I missed this thread until I was looking for something else. I just recently finished watching the series myself, and my friends and I have all been talking about how much fun it would be to run a campaign in an ancient Roman-inspired setting. But I think there are some modification...

What happens when you cast a spell?

You know, I didn't look up what the DMG says, but now I see that it says the same thing in the 3.5 DMG as what you describe. The writing vanishes. I was really only thinking of scrolls as having a single spell on them. In my experience that's how they're used. I can't recall when I've ever...

Doctor Who (Season 4) - Voyage of the Damned (SPOILERS)

Yeah, but this Titanic didn't sink, nor did the passengers manage to get to the lifeboats! :p Despite the name of the ship, it still seemed more like Poseidon to me.

What 'other' races have you played

I played a minotaur once. My first-ever 3.0 character. The GM sort of cobbled together some rules for playing a monstrous race as a PC, since the only books available at the time were the PHB and DMG. I'm not sure if even we had MM 1 yet at that point. I've always wanted to play something more...

Howdy, Rabelais! Always nice to see another Oregonian around. :)

ROME - HBO series..our favorite series

Precisely! Vorenus was Lawful Good by the standards of his culture. He showed loyalty and piety, and did the things that a good Roman citizen was expected to do. Romans didn't have all the legal prohibitions against murder or theft that modern Western societies have.

Doctor Who (Season 4) - Voyage of the Damned (SPOILERS)

Despite the name of the ship, it seemed very much like Poseidon Adventure to me. Especially the couple of size being reminescent of Shelley Winters' character in that film, and having the characters climb up through the bowels of the ship. I half expected the ship to roll over. Too bad they...

What happens when you cast a spell?

Specifically, what happens when you cast a spell from a scroll? I'm not talking mechanics here. What do you envision happens? Scrolls are single-use items, so how do you handle why you can't read the words off of that scroll more than once? Does the scroll burn up, Mission: Impossible style...

ROME - HBO series..our favorite series

We just finished watching the entire series a couple of weeks ago and thought it was brilliant. Great historical drama, with tremendous quality performances and a wonderful script. And from now on if I'm ever trying to think of how to run a paladin in D&D, I'm thinking of Lucius Vorenus. :D

Doctor Who (Season 4) - Voyage of the Damned (SPOILERS)

I enjoyed it. I thought it was a fun little homage to The Poseidon Adventure. I rather liked it that they were actually willing to kill off Kylie's character, rather than coming up with some lame excuse to have her part with the Doctor at the end. I liked the robots, which reminded me of the...

    Heroic Dilemma: Help Us!

I can see Kahuna Burger's point, but the Future plotline sounds like so much fun! It would probably be more fun if the world wasn't taken over by aliens, though. Are there no other supers your group can ally with to defeat the aliens? And why are the Germans the only possible allies?

    Terry Pratchett: Early onset Alzheimer's

It's so sad how things like this tend to happen to brilliant, charming people. I'm really glad I had the opportunity to meet and chat with Mr. Pratchett once. I hope medical science does well for him in fending off the effects of this awful disease. And I admire his attitude.

    Why I hate puzzles

It's certainly true that we can't really separate ourselves from our characters; I doubt that's even possible. And I'm not saying I'd want to resolve every event in the game by merely rolling dice. I'd find that pretty dull. I just wanted to remind DMs and designers to think carefully when...

Opinion wanted: playing a cleric using the druid's spell list

This is what I was thinking also. Instead of swapping the list wholesale, why not select some druid spells that fit your theme and just add those to the cleric spell list? Or possibly replace some spells from the cleric list with the new spells, so the spell list won't get any bigger than it...

    Why I hate puzzles

But this is exactly what I'm referring to when I say I want the challenge to require my character's skills to solve, not mine. If I'm playing a role, I want to play the role, not play me. If I can solve the puzzle but my character can't, how is that playing a role?
