    D&D 5E (2014) Does the Artificer Suck?

Infusions are a class feature so that kinda is the point of the statement of keeping the comparison fair. Flight is extremely important for a tank because you have full control of positioning, can bypass area denial effects, and double down on control/damage. It's one of the biggest flaws of...

    D&D 5E (2014) Does the Artificer Suck?

Fair is fair. Can't have a clean comparison if you aren't treating them the same as far as external factors are concerned. That's like someone giving the artificer a fighting style because half the classes get them. Its actually the opposite. You have your infusions slots used on direct...

    D&D 5E (2014) Does the Artificer Suck?

Not that great of of a build for battlesmith. Not bad either just kinda unfocused and the use of the smite spells are a poor choice 90% of the time. why didnt you also give them an additional magical item to make the comparison equal?

    D&D 5E (2014) Does the Artificer Suck?

The armorer isn't bad before that point per se. Their damage is just on the low end of the curve. Now imagine a party that has this theoretical barbarian and blade singer in it. Adding a bug bear armorer slap boxing everybody acting as a resource multiplier for both of them.

    D&D 5E (2014) Does the Artificer Suck?

Bracers of Archer only work in bows so it's not much help for the armorer.

    D&D 5E (2014) Does the Artificer Suck?

Still hard to rate it over the "okay" category. Maybe more so in a very limited magic gear game where the infusions will have increased value but all n all the ranged great sword once a round doesn't cut it. At lv 15 it gets a nice large boost with disadvantage on them and revolving...

    D&D 5E (2014) Does the Artificer Suck?

Mostly it comes down to resources other than HP and damage that can easily throw DMs off. Few weeks ago I unintentionally crashed a DMs plans just because I used a combination of arcane eye, clairvoyance, and scrying to avoid 90% of the challenges she had planned. She wasn't prepared for a...

    D&D 5E (2014) Does the Artificer Suck?

I think a lot of the motivation behind the idea artificers are somehow over tuned is due to the lack of tools presented for DMs to make sure the utilize a good variety of challenge types. So when a player chooses something that can blatantly circumvent the few things the DM uses of course they...

    D&D 5E (2014) A Simpler Change For Artificers?

Aye. Without reintroducing the concept of things like the dedicated wright, which comes with it's own issues within 5e's framework, crafting is hard to value as a tangible feature. That's why I would suggest adding it into the rest mechanic so there was some automatic progression included into...

    D&D 5E (2014) A Simpler Change For Artificers?

Would take quite a bit of work to figure out how these changes would effect the class. Crafting is hard to judge at all because it's so game dependent to the point it might not even be an option unless you make special rules to fold it into S/L rest. I like crafting and the reduction in craft...

D&D 5E (2014) Out of the Abyss versus Descent into Avernus - Which One to Run?

Both are pretty rough around the edges for the first 20-40% of them and take no small amount of work to smooth out. I personally think decent is better just because I prefer the sandboxy approach it has for the bulk of the meat of the campaign but that could annoy some tables who don't like the...

    D&D 5E (2014) Does the Artificer Suck?

The artificer is sitting in the corner looking at the barbarian/wizard mitigation paradigm and decides that having the best of both worlds would be handy.

    D&D 5E (2014) Does the Artificer Suck?

Any gear focus class has always had a polarizing effect on the player/dm pool. Which is funny to me because they make the more sense as an adventurer than the more traditional classes. I didn't think there's some holdover resentment from 3.x as well. Artificers back then were basically Excel...

    D&D 5E (2014) Does the Artificer Suck?

I think Schrodinger's barbarian is just as absurd as the wizard. At least the wizard has the theoretical ability to potentially have the correct spells prepared. Everytime someone brings up barbs they somehow have spent ASIs on feats and have increased ability scores while also seem to have...

    D&D 5E (2014) Does the Artificer Suck?

Damage is the least of a PCs worry when it comes to STs.without heavy opportunity cost barbarians have little to prevent mental saves from taking them out any bypassing all of their mitigation powers with something as benign as a first level spell.

    D&D 5E (2014) Does the Artificer Suck?

Decent AC is only one part of the picture. It just happens to be cheap to aquire. Witches don't make good tanks because they are super effective at mitigation. They are okay at mitigation but extremely good at preventing the damage and/or bad stuff from happening all together. Some people...

    D&D 5E (2014) Does the Artificer Suck?

You would have to factor in the fact the wizard doesn't have to use their health to mitigate damage which is all the barbarian has if they spend a limit rage to do so. So right off the back of your comparison's flawed because you're comparing the barbarian using a very limited resource to be...

    D&D 5E (2014) Does the Artificer Suck?

Eh. Most of the time the "actual" tank isn't that impressive at mitigation once you start pumping up the challenge beyond the rather low bar in the DMG. For example the quintessential bear totem barbarian has less EHP than a hobgoblin abjuration wizard with the eldritch adept feat (armor of...

    D&D 5E (2014) Does the Artificer Suck?

Not really that odd of a claim. Full casters can greatly impact the momentum of an encounter so tactical savvy NPCs are going to do their best to prevent them from doing so. Most "tank" PCs lack the ability to control more than 1-3 targets and have few tools to prevent ranged attacks and spells...
