GMs, What Plots do you use a lot?

I'm a sucker for Robin Hood plots. An individual or a group looks like their doing wrong from an outsider looking in at the situation. Player Characters come in and "right" the problem but then realize sick kids won't get needed medicine and the Megacorps get virtually free slave labor or...

    Fixed Level Gaming

Ooooh, that too! That was another thing I love about fixed level that didn't hit me at first when I was looking over Traveller on the outset. There is a thread going on with the title to the effect of "How to do you handle CRs" recently. I didn't post in it because I didn't want to sound snarky...

How much worldbuilding should novice GMs do? (forked thread)

Here's my little story. When I first starting playing D&D (D&D 3.0, Thomas the human cleric of St. Cuthbert!B-)) I had a DM that was totally into the build-as-you-play/no prep mentality. It was horrible. And frustrating. We would be attacked by random monsters at night for no reason other than...

What's a good source for *magical* magic items?

Read books. When I was running a regular D&D game I got 95% of my unique magic item ideas just from various fantasy and sci-fi novels I read. Just off the top of my head, reading The Once and Future King, there is a scene very early in The Sword in the Stone where young Wart must go into the...

    Fixed Level Gaming

Sure. After playing in a game where there is no advancement after character creation, I must say I actually enjoy it more. This is how the Traveller RPG works. Basically when you go through character generation, you make a character who has skills one would expect from a competent adult who's...

DMs: what have you learned from PLAYING that has made you a better DM?

What I've learned from playing that made me a better Game Master is that you don't need necessarily know everything that's going on. You just need to make the players think you do. And that following the rules is for squares.

As for myself, can you put me down for the 5th slot of Ghostbusters. My preferance is Winston if still available. If not then can I be Slimer?

Albany Gameday XI - April 18th

Of course. The Traveller system is very easy and straight forward. People who are unfamiliar with the game should not feel discouraged to join.

Forked from "An Epiphany" thread: Is World Building "Necessary"?

I would say yes. It's the equivalent to a DM saying, "You WILL face my totally tricked out Boss enemy and you WILL face his also totally awesome Lieutenant Mid-Boss. I don't care how you deal with getting to them, but those are the prescribed enemies that you will face."

Albany Gameday XI - April 18th

We played Dread last Gameday up on the coffee table/couch zone. It worked out good cause the table is nice and heavy so its stable and not prone to casual bumps. But because it has all sorts of stone tiles as it's surface, it's uneven. But if you just grab a book and put the Jenga tower on that...

Albany Gameday XI - April 18th

Well, if more GMs are needed you can put me down as one. Morning or afternoon doesn't matter. I'll have a full blurb out in a bit. It'll be a scenario using Mongoose Traveller rules.

    Judging character performance

No, I don't agree with the description. Why should a thief always be selfishly searching for ill-gotten gold under the nose of fellow party members for example? If you choose to roleplay a character that isn't a 1-dimensional stereotype, it makes you a poor performer? That is absurd.

Anymore updates? Couple of my lackeys... er, friends are interested in coming and hounding me for game info. As for myself, I'd be willing to run a game. Not sure what exactly. Most likely a Mongoose Traveller scenario since it's the system I've been dealing with the most recently and it's...

What system elements promote and hinder roleplaying (inspired by "does 4e hinder ")

As others have said above me, I feel reward systems are a big motivator to roleplaying. One game I think that has one of, if not the best pro-roleplaying reward systems is Dogs in the Vineyard. The reason I rate the games reward system, and subsequently it's roleplay promoting ability, is that...
