    The playtest has begun

For all those head-desking, as they fight with broken links and timeout errors, the playtest materials are mirrored here, as per a little birdie who tipped me off on Twitter: Link removed by admin Enjoy.

    [May] What are you reading?

Spent a couple of weeks poring over The Brinewall Legacy while I was laid up, post-back-operation in preparation for a game I just started running. Finally finished Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrel in the past week, and I've moved on to Ghost Story by Jim Butcher. Next up is Just a Geek by Wil...

    Session #1: 5/4/2012

The party, at the urging of various friends and allies, agreed to travel into the Brinestump Marsh and bring back the head of the Licktoad goblin tribe's chief, Gutward Rendwattle. After assembling their party, they walk the approximate 2 miles south and enter the marsh via the New Fish Trail...

    Trying to dump cable television.

NHL Center Ice looks promising. For some reason they're not nearly as blackout-heavy as MLB.tv is. But baseball is the big one I'm worried about, even if I play MLB the big bucks for their app, they lock video down by IP address. If I access it from a device with an IP address inside the home...

    Trying to dump cable television.

With the availability of quality programming (both past and current) on various online services like Netflix and Hulu, my wife and I have been toying with the idea of ramping up our broadband internet bandwidth (we're currently on what my one friend lovingly refers to as "stripper internet") and...

Can teens participate in game-store hosted RPGs?

I'm pretty sure it's going to vary store-by-store. At the local store that I've run a few organized games at, I've always had players in the 21+ range, but there have been other tables with younger players, so they're certainly allowed, if not explicitly encouraged.

    What to do...

For the record, both my wife and I play in a (mostly) weekly game, (mostly) every Sunday night. The game's been running for about 2.5 years now, and there are 6 of us in total (including GM). We all work on Monday mornings. It really isn't all that difficult to pull off. Don't let this be an...

You have evidence, and you can't trust anyone, what should you do?

Run through a crowded bus/train/subway station with the evidence on a DVD. Grab the most action-star-looking guy I can find, press the data disc into his hand, and tell him, "Time is short. You hold the key to everything!", look around panic-stricken, and then run away from him as fast as I...

Why would you leave your spouse after getting Amnesia

I get what you're saying, but if you're truly amnesic - i.e. you do not remember who you were, you no longer ARE the person your spouse married. You might, one day, have your memories and personality return, and you might go back to being that person, but you simple *arent*, until your brain...

Just how prepared are your contingency plans

I'm pretty sure this is precisely what separates the Level 1 LBEG from the Level 20 BBEG. ;)

    If D&D didn't exist

I have to assume my friends and I would still be getting together. We'd just be playing a crap-ton more Dominion, Catan, Zombies!!!, and Killer Bunnies. =/

    Lousy Poker Face?

Yep. In all honesty, my players know I have a d20 that I brag about it rolling a disproportionate number of crits when I DM. If I emptied out my dice bag and couldn't find it some session, I'd laugh it off, and then fully expect whoever the culprit was to hand it over at the end of the night...

    Lousy Poker Face?

Certainly not! But that doesn't preclude me from trying to minimize the effect or opportunity she has to read me. Please don't get me wrong - it's not like I gasped, acted shocked and appalled and then let the conversation drop. We talked, and I asked her not to do that, or to TRY to not let...

    Lousy Poker Face?

If that's what it'll take, I'm willing to give it a try. I'm not much of an over-actor...in fact my natural tendency is to underplay my reactions. Which is why the wife knows when they're getting a rise out of me - to most people it's probably imperceptible because I'm usually a pretty stoic...

Nice things players have done for DM's/GM's

My players are good people. Honestly. About 6 years ago, life dictated that my wife and I move back to her hometown. Our son had just died, and my wife *needed* to be near to her mother and sister. As we sat down to our next session after my wife and I had decided on the move, I sadly...

    Lousy Poker Face?

I am fortunate enough to have the opportunity to game with my wife. I've gotten to introduce her to RPGs, and been lucky enough to watch her interest and love for the hobby grow over the last 7 years or so. Unfortunately for me, she's apparently taken that time to study me, and learn my habits...

    Build Advice: Rogue-y Cleric

Here's the deal: for my group's next game, one of my players has offered to take the GM reigns for a spin, meaning I get to play with a group of guys (and a gal) that I almost never get to play with. On top of things - I get to make one of the "extra" characters - the Rogue, Fighter, and Wizard...

How was the civil war not about slavery?

I think, at it's core, you hit the nail on the head regarding States Rights. The South maintained that the North didn't have the right to say "you can no longer base your economy on slave labor." And the North said, "To heck with that. Look up the Interstate Commerce Clause." And the South...
