Mike Mearls tweet: Is the Known World of Mystara coming to 5e? (What's Cool About Mystara?)

Maybe he's just using Twitter for what it's intended. To say things that don't mean much.

Keen Mind. Because you can afford to with those stats.

Are We Looking At A New RPG Kickstarter Record?

He was shocked at the degree; but, he knows where he's been spending his time, where he's finding his fans, where his other opportunities are coming from, how things are different now than before, where he's spent the most time marketing himself and this Kickstarter, and all the different...

Are We Looking At A New RPG Kickstarter Record?

I'm backing up the opinion of the one who actually made the $2+ million Who's been in the business for 20+ years and knows where his audience comes from

    Xanathar's 18 Pages of What??

I've found them incredibly useful. They've become my NPC roster. It chops a lot of effort and time off my adventure planning - and adds a lot of verisimilitude in my DMing - to be able to ratchet off a bunch of good names for plot-centric characters and other people the PCs will interact with.

Are We Looking At A New RPG Kickstarter Record?

Yeah, that's a little dramatic. Look, he's absolutely right about one thing: his success was due to YouTube. 1000%. He got credibility as a designer with his DM advice series, he got more trust by not having ads, he proved his writing chops to new fans with his books, and he is a fantastic...

D&D 5E (2014) The best solution for longswords

Nah, in a campaign with proper environmental challenges, it's easy to see switching it up to keeping an open hand in many situations. - Needing to carry something heavy for a while - Needing to hold a torch - Moving along treacherous terrain, improving balance and holding on to a railing or...

    Xanathar's 18 Pages of What??

IIRC they said two things. "Humans are the most popular" and "Most tables don't use feats" and that got conflated together by people who didn't think through it clearly. Is that the thing Mearls (IIRC) corrected, via Twitter?

    Xanathar's 18 Pages of What??

This isn't 'Cakes and Quilts'. it's a game about life and death adventuring, not sitting indoors and sewing. 3E ruined the game with such ready-made crafting. It doesn't belong. Xanather's tweaks are enough. You want magic? Go out and find it. The suggestions in the DMG are perfect: 'Getting...

    D&D 5E (2014) Is Expertise too good?

Because skills and combat are different systems, and a +1 is not necessarily the same thing when it interacts with different systems? Because a Rogue's skills have to mean something at high levels when Wizards just *snap* change reality on a moment's notice, and the idea that the class who's...

Are We Looking At A New RPG Kickstarter Record?

I don't see you as a typical 'get off my drawbridge' Grognard, so I don't think it was at you. Now, the ones you had to ban when Wizards hired that young female employee recently...

"Invalid Thread specified. If you followed a valid link, please notify the administrator" EVERYWHERE

I'm seeing this warning all over the place in the forums. In the D&D forum, these are all showing it to me: Idea for D&DBeyondHow many elves are too many elves?Survivor Subclasses (Non-Magic)- THERE CAN BE ONLY ONE! That's barely the start. Many threads are doing that to me here too. Is...

D&D 5E (2014) Feats: Do they stifle creativity and reduce options?

This is an extension of the OD&D argument that the Thief ruined the game. Now, picking locks and climbing walls and sneaking were the purview of a single class, and others - that formerly were able to do those things just fine - were now told they couldn't. It's a natural progression that's...

D&D 5E (2014) What do you do when players say "we go north" but their characters don't have the "Keen Mind" Feat or Navigation Equipment?

Yeah, skill checks should be 'when there are strong immediate consequences to failure that matter in the plot'. I'm lenient on them most of the time. I'd rather the characters feel like they can rely on them to do awesome stuff than have to check literally every time they do a thing.

Fluff, Rules, and the Cleric/Warlock Multiclass (WITH POLL!)

This concept doesn't come from 'designing out' a character by necessity either, so your assumption that it is shows that you really don't understand the situation. You attribute people who want to build that back story of trying to build literal comic book characters. And you demand respect...

[Home Brew: Skill Challenges in 5E] What about Luck? Bardic Inspiration? Guidance?

Thank you, you've given me a lot to think about. I didn't play 4e (I wasn't playing TTRPGs at that time), but I've always admired what it brought to the game from afar, and I'm shameless about experimenting with different mechanics to see how they can expand the table's enjoyment. And, yes...

[Home Brew: Skill Challenges in 5E] What about Luck? Bardic Inspiration? Guidance?

If it's good enough for Matt Colville (the King of Kickstarter) to steal, it's good enough for me. :) Ooh, you say 'in the same way', so you do something similar. Care to share how do you structure them? I'm really curious. We've done a few of them in 5E, and they've integrated seamlessly into...

Fluff, Rules, and the Cleric/Warlock Multiclass (WITH POLL!)

You know, I can be a member of the Mafia, and owe my absolute allegiance to the Mafia Don, while simultaneously having an exceptionally close relationship with the Lieutenant in my neck of the woods. As long as what I do is working towards the greater good of the Family, the Lieutenant can take...
