[Home Brew: Skill Challenges in 5E] What about Luck? Bardic Inspiration? Guidance?

Just a question for those of you who are using the 4E style 'Skill Challenges' to spice up your games. I didn't see much discussion about this in Google, so I'm wondering if anyone else can weigh in. Assuming you do the Matt Colville approach: The party must succeed at (X, Y, or Z) skill...

Editions of D&D you have played the most in your life

    1) AD&D 1E, from junior high through to late college. 2) 3-3.5E as a "grown" man, for a few years. 3) Moldvay Basic as a kid for a few years. 4) 5E, now for a year or so. ... and a WHOLE lot of other RPGs along the way.

D&D 5E (2014) Breaking the Game with Double Bonus Actions

Ah, it was a show of support, in good fun, from players trying to overwhelm a DM. I'll put in a sarcasm smiley in next time so that's obvious.

D&D 5E (2014) Breaking the Game with Double Bonus Actions

That already increased the complexity of the rule by 100%. Let's see how many exceptions, edge cases, loopholes and problems this one house rule will unintentionally create! :heh:

D&D 5E (2014) Breaking the Game with Double Bonus Actions

Too bad for them. The rules are made primarily to play well, and 'common sense' is way down the list. Go look at yourself in a mirror, and practice these: "No." "We stay with the rules as written." "That's not going to happen." It gets easier and easier over time.

    Elven Accuracy and Summoned Creatures...

Did the Elf summon another Elf with that feat? :heh:

Paladin / Warlock Faith conflict query

A LOT of pre-60's fiction had that issue, not just him. Then, the 'new wave' hit, we had the crazy stuff of Ellison, Zelazny, Farmer, the studied ambiguity of LeGuin, and more...and absolutism was not the only game in town. That's been percolating in the genre for over 50 years now, so trying...

Paladin / Warlock Faith conflict query

Stopping these sorts of character ideas is such a loss. There are so many role play and plot opportunities a character like that gives you. Being torn between two masters, conflicts within themselves that can end us in awesome story hooks. It's too much to ask people to give up that sort of...

D&D 5E (2014) What class fills the tank role best? Fighter, Barbarian, Cleric or Paladin?

The only way to find out if your DM is an antagonistic meta-gaming jerk is to try it.

Paladin / Warlock Faith conflict query

These discussions bring so forth so many house rules masquerading as 'one true faith' gaming! It looks like the absolutism of AD&D paladins will still take another generation to die out. Oh well.

    Do you allow multiple Inspiration?

I tried it. We stopped using it. It breaks the game. It's super SUPER strong. Luck is basically one of the most powerful feats. Getting the ability to do that - burn several advantages in one session - trivializes drama. Characters don't really need to use them on a regular basis, so they...

D&D 5E (2014) What class fills the tank role best? Fighter, Barbarian, Cleric or Paladin?

Yeah, the idea that a pen and paper RPG has to 100% replicate an MMO aggro mechanic to use the term is kind of silly. We had 'Meat shield walls' in the 80's. They prevented the magic users and thieves from being mashed, and gave monsters something to bang on. I never got into the level of...

    D&D 5E (2014) Balancing Full Casters with Non-Casters

We have talked through this extensively with our players, and this is what we have in our 'House Playing Style' document: I wrote this for further explanation for potential new GMs (in our West Marches game) and for players who are skeptical: It hasn't been a problem at all, and the game is...

    D&D 5E (2014) Disruptive Players Update & Question On Finding Players/Games

Nah, be the bigger person and call it a day. Tell them something neutral, like 'you want different things out of a game, that's not going to change, so we shouldn't try to make it work.' Make a new game, don't invite the bad players, and move on.

D&D 5E (2014) concentration in 5th edition, whats your fix?

I'm not worried about previous editions, or the people that prefer them. I'm worried about this one. Like I said, I'm a gray Grognard, and I'm fine. If other Grognards can't be fine, it's because they are too sentimental, and want to play the old game, and not this new one. They should go play...

D&D 5E (2014) concentration in 5th edition, whats your fix?

I've played since Blue Book Basic, and to me, this version is the best one yet, and Concentration is one of the major reasons. My table is over 50% new players for the first time in 20 years. We always have new people waiting in the wings to try the game at any time. There is no way in hell I...

D&D 5E (2014) concentration in 5th edition, whats your fix?

Almost 97% telling the OP to use it 'as is'. I'm so proud of this thread.

D&D 3.x how much weaker are wizards(and other casters) in this edition compared to 3.5?

Where? What rules, or what splats? I never saw it until 4E.

    D&D 5E (2014) It’s Official: I don’t like 5th Edition Wizards and ‘Specialists’

Oh dear Jesus no. Concentration is one of the few reasons I feel a caster is actually challenging, because I have to really keep an eye towards what I'm doing, and I have to be incredibly strategic with limited resources on abilities that are frankly too good in every other way. Let the...

    D&D 5E (2014) Should a D&D 5e DM read the DMG and PHB?

Yeah, I remember DMs like this when I was young. He's just a control freak with a way-too-high opinion of himself. It happens. Do him a favor, and tell him that you're looking for a game that's actually a game, and leave. Or, just leave. Either way will be better for you, and the rest is his...
