D&D 4E Essential 4e: Heroes of the Forgotten Lands

That seems to be the general rule in the essentials books. The Knights equivalent of the "marking mechanic" and "punishment of breaking the mark" is much simpler. You just turn the aura on or off and it applies to anyone next to you. And, like sneak attacks, you hit shifters and people...

    Essentials Ranger - wild speculation

They could easily give the essential ranger the primal power source (so the druid doesn't feel lonely). That would make the 8 classes: Fighter and Rogue (martial), Cleric and Paladin (divine), Wizard and Warlock (arcane) and Ranger and Druid (primal). Nice symmetry there. I'm not sure, but...

    Another feat tax?

The Essential books didn't solve the feat tax, but at least put in some, shall we say, tax "incentives". A - Instead of the old expertise feats, the new ones give a secondary bonus based on the weapon/implement type. Included is a staff feat which combines both weapon and implement expertise...

    Ditching [W] altogether

Part of the weapon damage issue though is the concept of trading off. Superior weapons have the best combination of damage, proficiency and stuff like high crit, defensive and brutal properties. Then there is military which loses a bit of potency, and simple even less, which means that certain...

    D&D 5E (2014) Essentials: More like 3.9e than 4.5e (link inside)

If anything, I'd say that generally strikers are the "simple" role. Leaders need to pay attention to their party, tracking hit points and finding the best use of bonuses. They also have immediate actions to enhance their allies so they have to pay attention during other people's turns...

    D&D 5E (2014) Essentials: More like 3.9e than 4.5e (link inside)

There is a reason they did not call them "just" builds. X Power contains builds ... and in those books, you do not have enough information to play those classes without also using the appropriate PHB book as well. However, with the Essentials line, you will see all the information you need to...

    Player's Options: Speculation

My guesses: (a) Player's Options may be smaller, and softcover like the Essentials, so thus differentiating it from the PHB books (b) Related to (a), PHB3 basically had Psionics ... plus Hybrid Classes, Skill Powers, and a couple of non Psionic classes. If you cut out the 'extra' stuff, and...

Chilling Cloud & Magic Missile interaction with Empowering Lightning (Answered)

The general rule is that effects that would normally add to damage refers to rolling for damage, and thus won't apply to static effects. With the errata to Magic Missle, they made sure to include a "special" trait which increases the damage by the enhancement bonus of the implement, and also...

Essentials nostalgia - the death of martial healing

So, you are basically saying that most of the people you play with, including yourself, don't really care that much about adding extra flavor to combat, and just want to get on with the "game" portion of the battle ... but you still basically hate how martial healing hurts your ability to...

    Errata?

I know that the special editions with the silvery cover, etc ... had the errata for stealth, for example (although they included much of the same errata in PH2 I believe). The errata to rules (as opposed to powers, classes, feats, etc) will likely show up in the essential lines, in the form of...

I hope for another multiclass feat for monks

At the moment, there are now ranger melee powers that use Dex as a primary stat, and there is also the assassin. You can even go with the spellscar multiclass to get some dex based weapon powers. A dex/str monk has a lot of options for hybrid or multiclass with strength+weapon based classes. For...

    D&D 4E 4E Thought Experiment

I suggest keeping an eye out for the Dark Sun Campaign Setting coming out later this year. There will likely be some concepts that can be stripmined for use in this context. Low/no-magic item can be handled in system (the characer builder/DMG2 has the inherent bonus thing to give the basic...

Rogue + Warlock + Assassin using multiclass and hybrid equals "win"

The situation would have involved a straight Rogue paragon multiclassing as a warlock to get Shadow Walk as a feat OR a Rogue/Warlock using the hybrid paragon path to get a hybrid talent a second time. Also, it is possible to paragon multiclass with a hybrid character, as you can take the...

Is too small of a sandbox the same as railroading?

Passive Agressive is always the right response to PCs not behaving appropriately ;)

    D&D 4E I admit it. I don't "get" 4e psionics.

Well, 3 at-wills is more than most have. Spending the full power points, you'd be able to use all 3 as encounter powers ... giving you the same number of encounter powers as most have. You also have the ability to use them at 'half power' and get twice as many "encounter powers", the half-powers...

Can a Monk Use a Reach Weapon to Deliver a Touch Attack?

Similarly, in the case of not using Melee 1, there are some ways to extend the reach of touch (epic destinies that make people bigger)

    There's something about Runepriests.

Also, with the way that some of the other at-wills for different classes (like Righteous Brand) were errata'd to no longer scale with level in terms of secondary effect, the runepriest's at-wills seem to favor scaling the rider with level instead of scaling the damage.

So what's up with this "Essential" stuff?

An the pre-Essentials part of 2010, with psionics reintroduced in PH3, and Dark Sun as the campaign setting also seems like an attempt at inticing players of older editions as well. The 2011 campaign setting may be, comparitively speaking, more accessible to new players.

    Trap Door Spiders Don't Work

That's probable a good way to do it, having the pit be deep/large enough for the bugbear to be inside it "comfortably" and have room to pull someone in. The idea would be giving the bugbear an attack based on being hidden that let's him pop open the trap door, grab, pull someone in and close the...

Rogue + Warlock + Assassin using multiclass and hybrid equals "win"

Yup. It's a heroic tier feat that only requires having both the assassin and warlock classes, which can be acheived by a single multiclass feat. Meaning a three feat requirement (hybrid for the rogue feature, the multiclass feat, then the feat to get shadow walking).
