    D&D Movie/TV D&D Movie Hit or Flop?

WotC has already stated that I'm not their target market anymore, so I really don't care if they fail or not. That being said, I enjoyed the movie, and I stated it was a critical success. Stating the obvious, that it lost between $100 and $150 million, and observing that a movie that looses...

    D&D Movie/TV D&D Movie Hit or Flop?

A theater takes roughly 50% of the box office take. So, it made $208 million. The theaters took roughy $104 million. Meaning the studio took home $104 million. Also, the advertising cost is NOT factored in to the production cost. There are no hard numbers on these costs for this movie, but it...

D&D 5E (2024) Are Bishops "Clerics" or "Priests"

And I can buy into that. So your average priest in Furyondy or Veluna is probably a 'normal man' (B/X) or '0-level' (AD&D), who MAY just be some guy, or MAY have access to 1st level spells WHEN IN HIS CHURCH and praying for 1 day. The average bishop in Verbobonc or Veluna City may just be a...

D&D 5E (2024) Are Bishops "Clerics" or "Priests"

So, years ago I ran a Castles & Crusades game (AD&D via 3.5e) set in Greyhawk. I ruled that village priests and even bishops (head of a church in a city) were just 'normal men' (0-level), and ONLY had spell casting up to their title (using the old level titles, where a 'priest' is a 3rd level...

    Forgotten Realms edition question

I actually prefer the 1980 Folio, as there are no gods mentioned. It allows me to keep the Law-Neutral-Chaos paradigm of 1981 D&D (B/X).

    Forgotten Realms edition question

Because I'm planning for OSE-AF, I've gone the route of FR5 Savage Frontier, and grouped the gods by "gods of civilization" (lawful), "gods of nature" (neutral), "gods of the barbarians" (chaotic), "evil gods" (chaotic), and "gods of the demi-humans" instead of the 9-point alignment arrangement...

    Forgotten Realms edition question

I'm actually planning out a 1e style campaign using OSE-Advanced Fantasy. Relying on the FR 1e Campaign Set and FR5 Savage North primarily (the campaign will be on the Sword Coast). I'll add FR1 Waterdeep and the North, FR2 Moonshae Isles, FR3 Empires of the Sand, and FR5 The Magister as they...

    Forgotten Realms edition question

I'm just starting to jump in to FR, after decades of Greyhawk. So, I feel you and I've been doing the same research. I personally believe that the 1e box set, with the 1e Savage Frontier boxed set, gives you probably the most bang for your buck, IF you want a fleshed out 'coat hanger' to hang...

D&D 5E (2024) Jeremy Crawford: “We are releasing new editions of the books”

Yup, Mexican Coca-Cola. Real sugar, just like it used to be here. And it is GOOOOOD!!!! I can get it here - in glass bottles no less - at the local carniceria, or when I go to Rocky Point.

How did you convince your group to try something different?

It is a d6-d6 mechanic (Fudge-like). You roll d6-d6, for a value of +5 to -5, and add your skill level (ranked 1-10). The Target number is also 1-10, based on either your opponents relevant skill, or based on "how hard" the activity is on a scale of 1 to 10. It is also a player only rolling...

D&D General Describe your first character and your last character (and your weirdest)

I don't remember my first character ever (I was 10 years old). My first memorable character was Troogo the human magic-user for AD&D. I played him up to the low 20's levels. My current character is Reynald the Lion, human fighter for B/X. Lawful fighter who fancies himself a paladin. I don't...

D&D General Has anyone run a PHB only table?

I'll do you one better: Several years ago we did a 'core-4 classes and core-4 races, with feats' campaign. It lasted 25-30 sessions. It was great.

D&D Movie/TV “Honor Among Thieves” Now Available for Purchase (iTunes + Amazon Prime)

We watched it on Vudu tonight. It is still 'purchase only' for $19.99, but comes with 9 short features (usually about 10 minutes each). It says it is available 'for rent' as of 5-23. Currently it is showing as Vudu's #2 of top 200 movies. While I thought it was "just OK" when I saw it at the...

When the New Edition Doesn't Cut It

Besides the usual D&D3.5 to 4th stuff, the one real recent edition change I don't like is The One Ring. Cubicle 7's 1e (actually their 1.5e revision) is a solid game I love. They lost the LotR license, so now it is with Free League, and their Lord of the Rings: The One Ring 2e game. While many...

How did you convince your group to try something different?

If I am putting together a short campaign or one-shot, I will put together a 1-2 page 'character generation' cheat sheet and a 1-2 page rules cheat sheet. I find that as long as players know how to generate a character, and how to do action resolutions, they can wing it.

How did you convince your group to try something different?

If you like the western genre (not weird west), I cannot recommend Wild West Cinema enough!! It costs something like $5 on Drivethrurpg, and is a great system that really fades in to the background.

How did you convince your group to try something different?

So our group (in-person, all 30s-50s) has two regular DMs, me and my buddy. My buddy tends to run B/X (OSE) exclusively, for 6- to 12-month campaign stints. Between stints, I usually run shorter 3-6 month games. I like to experiment. My group knows that, and never says 'no'. That being said, we...

DM as Entertainer - Not as Equal

Perhaps a simple GM email? "Hey guys, I really enjoy our pre-game visits, but it seems like we've fallen into the habit of bringing them into our 'game time'. This cuts our adventure time down significantly. Let's try to focus after 6:00pm on game time. Thanks guys!!"

DM as Entertainer - Not as Equal

Our in-person group (some of us have been playing together for 16 years, many of us for 10+ years) spends an hour or so chatting, drinking whiskey and smoking cigars, talking politics, work and home life - just catching up. We play every other Saturday for 4-5 hours, the social hour is prior to...

D&D 5E (2024) Rests should be dropped. Stop conflating survival mechanics with resource recovery.

Having class abilities tied to a 24 hour clock. "Once per day you can sleep 6-8 hours to reset class abilities". Tie rests and healing to the old B/X mechanic: "Every hour you MUST take a short rest of 10 minutes. Doing so allows you to spend HD to replace lost hit points". Make HD replenish...
