Gritty Campaigns. How you play one?

I just DMed a 5e adventure, maybe will make a campaign. The players seemed to like it and what I did was basically DM 1e. There was not a single skill check. There were puzzles but the players had to solve it, not the characters via checks. Only the rogue could pick locks. The Rogue had to...

"Run away! Run away!" ... what if they don't?

Playing badly to me is just playing badly. I was DMing a year or so back and this friend of a friend decided he was going to play a nutsy, kooky monk who went around making Three Stooges noises and acting all wacky. He thought it was funny and he was "role playing". I had to eventually...

"Run away! Run away!" ... what if they don't?

I am playing in a 1e game over roll20 currently. After 20 sessions in we are all 2nd level. Yesterday we literally ran into a Hill Giant throwing boulders at us. A Hill Giant encounter at 2nd level. Needless to say we did not attack and had we attacked our fate would be entirely our own...

"Run away! Run away!" ... what if they don't?

Intentionally playing badly isn't really role playing, at least role playing anyone else should be playing with for their own safety. Role Playing "my character always fights, goes on suicide missions and doesn't care if he lives or dies" is just another way of telling the DM "No" to...

"Run away! Run away!" ... what if they don't?

If it is a railroady situation then don't put them into that kind of predicament. If it is more sandboxy where the characters choose their path and the players are effectively co-writing the story and campaign, let them die. Death is a great learning experience for players early on, and...

    In Search Of Mike Carr

B1 deserves all the praise it gets because it really teaches you how to DM, something adventures now just assume you know how to do. The picking of monsters, the assigning of treasure, mapping, choosing of characters and the concept of NPC...I remember it all being in there explained clearly...

Need input on a ship based mini adventure

Since it is a mini adventure, I would wreck the ship and then find them on an Island where they meet the skipper, his first mate, a millionaire and his wife, a star, and two others not worth naming (we will call them "the rest") and see what your players do with these wacky castaways.

Pre-3e mechanics vs d20 system mechanics

The DM can just say to add a +2 to make it harder, or a plus 10 even if so inclined. The roll under is just so easy and requires so little effort, whereas the roll over requires checking your list of 35 different proficienciies to find your plus in question. I would say it still should be...

Pre-3e mechanics vs d20 system mechanics

Rolling under your stat was the simplest of all. Your strength is a 14, roll under that on a d20. The End. No calculating proficiency or consulting a sheet to see what your modifier is, just roll the die and see the result. The problem is now having stats higher than 18 sort of kills the...

D&D 5E (2014) Does anyone still do mapping?

I loved being the mapper because as a 1e Magic User it kept me very entertained during points when I did not have much to do. Also it is very relaxing, like the way people used to do needlepoint. I did some when I got back into 5e and the other players thought I was wasting my time, but...

Maybe we are talking about two different games. The game I was in was 5e, where I believe Monks are allowed to use swords. The question is not whether he could use it, but whether or not a +2 profiency bonus would come with it. I am not entirely sure what rule you are referring to here...

Anyone know of any good game stores in the Queens, NY area?

The Geekery is in Astoria. Sorry just saw this. You might want to take a trip into Manhattan and go to Uncommons. Brooklyn has The Brooklyn Strategist.

How to deal with solitary party member?

I would just find ways to split the party, and maybe have him with one other person. Being alone with one other makes it hard to get lost in the crowd, and he might learn how to play well with others. Plus there is story possibilities splitting the party.

I don't know what to tell you. If you don't see a difference between someone thinking, reacting to, and talking about the in narrative facts of the game, and worrying about what is going on in the plot, and someone who is looking and thinking about how he can keep and manage a +2 proficiency...

    A) he could have grabbed it and passed it to someone else B) put the sheet down and don't worry about BS like if he will lose a proficiency bonus and just go with the story. It's an obsession with stats over roleplaying. That is where the Es differ.

I come to games from a 1e perspective. It's a 5e game set in a 2e world. We ran into a demon who could just devour you but masqueraded as an old man who hosted us weary travelers. Hanging over his mantle was a sword for no particular reason. When we were woken up by the screams of our...

    D&D 5E (2014) How Dark is Your D&D Preference?

I play characters extra dark or extra light. My favorite to play are genuinely nice guys, but I played an evil rogue who killed someone and told the dying NPC the sound of his breaking bones was making him excited. (if you get my point) My nice guy character is the saintliest paladin who ever...

Player Responsibility for the GM's Fun??

It's strange but often true that the Dungeon Master is really the Dungeon Servant, and that his enjoyment comes only when the players derive enjoyment from all his hard work. It's almost like the satisfaction a grandmother gets when you love the dinner she made for you. When I DM all it...

We Were All New D&D Players Once

I'll be honest. I am in my 50s, started playing when only two of the three books were out, saw all the geek staple movies like Exacalibur, Beastmaster and various Harryhausen epics...and I still have no idea what an Arcane Trickster is. I never heard of that term before I got back to the...
