D&D 4E Is character death acceptable in 4e? If so, how often?

If I may, I think the thread was spawned when I suggested to the OP that a battle he thought the PCs won handily (after all, no one died) was a near TPK. I think the issue here has more to do with figuring out how to make a fight hard enough that a PC or two might drop and die, but the party...

D&D 4E Is character death acceptable in 4e? If so, how often?

I know that when I'm a player in that situation, it's not a clear cut choice. If I give up an action in order to bring him back up, but the monster that's on top of him goes before he does, and he's only got 11 hit points ... My healing him will just be a wasted action. The monster will just...

D&D 4E Is character death acceptable in 4e? If so, how often?

I think this is fundamentally one of the issues with 4th... It's very hard to kill a PC without a TPK. If you're willing to work at it, I know of three good approaches To take out the leader, you want a moderate to easy encounter with some alpha strike ability (Skirmishers or Lurkers). Have...

    Expertise justification?

As an LFR DM who's had two TPKs out of 20 or so sessions, I'd like to say that while the difference between a moderate battle and a hard battle is much THICKER than it looks, the difference between a hard battle and a TPK is much THINNER than it looks. I think you were closer to a TPK than you...

Advice on using GURPs to replace 4E?

Maybe, but it's not linear. My GURPS is very rusty, but from memory I'd say a 1st level 3e wizard was around 50 points or so, a 5th level 3e wizard is probably more like 200, and a 20th level wizard is probably around 2000+

    Multiclassing to Vestige Warlock

Talk your DM into allowing Eldritch Slide (You'll have to house rule add a power in the Character Builder) to replace Eldritch Strike. Dual Pact Helllock. Grab Dwarven Weapon Training, a Pact Hammer, Hammer Rhythm, Bracers of Mighty Striking, and go to town. Works fine. :)

D&D 4E How to build encounters in 4e (aka Only you can prevent Grindspace!)

I personally don't find the Hexhammer build to be grindy, but that may be because after choosing Infernal Warlock and Armor, everything else goes to offense, that they generally run into Melee despite being in theory a ranged class, and that their Ref and Will NACDs are all really weak. I see...

speeding up combat by halfing hit points

My experience is that it's not quite enough. Giving them 2 levels might be better, but I think you also need to increase monster damage more than a few points to keep things interesting. (+1 to hit, +half lvl to damage might be in the right ballpark, or you might want to add +lvl to damage)...

Anyone good with Excel want to take up the challenge?

I've got a good excel spreadsheet. It's not done yet, but it's pretty close. But ... I don't think it's OGL compliant. So I don't think I can give a pointer to it.

    Core Handbook Errors Discussion

Yep, its damage is fine. It's the to-hit bonus I find questionable. Most more-reliable attacks are at +2, or attack reflex. This one is at +3 or more AND attacks reflex. So, my to get the damage, I multiply the base damage of my holy symbol by 2. What's the base damage of the holy symbol...

Maybe not wrong, but sure seems out of bound.... Armor Piercing Strike: +second stat to hit, not just to damage, and it already targets Reflex Less questionable: Warpriest power Battle Cry: Implement, but does 2[W]

    Excerpt: Economies [merged]

Do we have enough information to do the math? If I let my players sell magic items for 50%, as a campaign wide house rule, by how many levels should I reduce the parcels? A level 5 set of parcels has one magic item of each level from 9 to 6, and enough cash to buy 2 level 5 items. That's 12000...

    Excerpt: skill challenges

No, but it does appear to be an example of a standard negotiation with a local leader. So apparently intimidation is usually useless when negotiating with local leaders. It's bad precedent, because it confuses goal and approach. That's not a problem. The only Duke reference was flavor text...

    Excerpt: skill challenges

I saw that, and think it looks good for a "lean on someone" template. I'm mostly upset that the goals (get something from the authority figure) got conflated with the approach. I think the basic mechanism seems sound, although I'm going to have a hard time weaving the rolls in with the...

The excerpt is a skill challenge template. It it titled "Negotiation", indicating that it will be the model for negotiations. The goal is From this, it seems to me that this is intended to cover most negotiations where you try to gain assistance from a local leader. So far, I'm on board...

initimidation I also have issues with how the template handles intimidate. I think the issue is an implicit assumption that won't always be true: That the NPC is more powerful in total than the PCs. I think I'd prefer something like: Where an "extrememly hard" check has a DC set to be an...

    D&D 3.x Epic Destinies for 3.5

I like the Eternal Hero, as I think they made a mistake translating the fast healing ability by using temporary hit points. (It seems that Temp HP in 4e is healing if you've lost HP. In 3e it isn't, as you go back to your lower number when they go away.) Notice the artifact master though: once...
