I'm by no means a deeply experienced DM on SPG, but I did have a similar experience. I have run so far in total 23 paid game session through SPG. I started running them early summer of 2023. But I actually signed up in March! Initially I was opening up multiple campaigns on Mondays, Tuesdays...

How important are and RPG's aesthetics to you?

Wow. Quite a callback there. I have that book somewhere around here.

I was reacting to the statement that “no one new” would start playing because of this adventure. I interpreted “no one new” as someone who hasn’t played a role-playing game before, not someone who’s never heard of D&D5e before. “Learn to play” and “Beginners Welcome” is very common on SPG as a...

Ehh…I do make up a crapton of stuff but it’s all in advance of game day. Including designing elaborate maps for my players to explore. I know they love the maps. It’s a difference in expectations too between my group and her middle-school classmates.

Actually, I think they will. SPG runs a lot of digital ads. They try to scoop up search results if people search for “how to find a D&D game” for example they would run paid Google ads that drive to startplaying.games that show up in those results. I think this event of this adventure from WotC...

I haven’t asked so I’m guessing, but for the campaign I run on SPG, I believe the players are four in the late 20s and one is late 40s.

This is so true. My daughter is a co-Dungeonmaster at her middle school’s D&D club. She’s 13. Every time she tells me about what she did at her session—she’s just making crap up! And it’s pretty awesome. She usually makes up some random magical item or random monster and some random ability role...

One of the top DMs who is making $75k reportedly, charges $40+ per person per session, and they are running like 10 to a dozen games a week, consistently filled. There may be others who make even more money, but don’t blog about it. Also, from what the startplaying.games moderators have said...

I think there are actually too many resources! It’s hard to find the ones that are the most useful for a GM’s personal style and needs. I read dozens of blog posts every day and a lot of them aren’t very helpful but sometimes I strike gold.

I have a home team of 5 of us. When we first started playing about 6 years ago, 4 of the 5 took turns DMing. Since then two of those 4 have trailed off DMing and not returned to it, so right now two of us take turns. The two that stopped...it's primarily the investment of time that it takes to...

How important are and RPG's aesthetics to you?

I enjoy the art. But in the end it’s irrelevant to me. I want a good rule system, good world building and VTT integration to make play easier, since I only play online. I’ll go even further…I read only PDFs and I read them in dark mode because it’s easier on my eyes. In most cases, in dark...

Who are your favorite TTRPG reviewers?

I’ve been listening to Ludo Narrative Dissidents podcast. I don’t agree with some things they say, but their reviews are interesting and smart. A bit self-promoting at times, but overall I like them a lot.

TTRPGS that are Not DnD we'll be Highlighting in March

Ooh, I’m looking forward to hearing about The Contract. I hope more games will provide digital toolsets to go along with a new release. But I can’t believe you are going to interview someone about a goose ttrpg without having a panic attack.

What do you think of these three Patreon map-makers? Any suggestions which would be the most useful?

That makes sense. I also use Foundry. I believe all three of these map-makers provide both static and .webm versions which are better for Foundry than mp4s because they are smaller k-size.

What do you think of these three Patreon map-makers? Any suggestions which would be the most useful?

I'm thinking of signing up for a map-maker Patreon, and I'm torn between three options. Does anyone subscribe to any of these? They are all beautiful, and I'm having a hard time figuring out, which will be the most useful for my homebrew campaign. Any insights would be appreciated! Animated...

Dagger in the Heart: A Campaign Book for Heart: The City Beneath

I’ve read Spire, and I really like it, but haven’t had a chance to run it for my players. I’m definitely considering supporting this.

What Starter Sets Are As Good As The Full game?

I need to remember this because I’d like to learn that game at some point. Do you know if it’s available as a Foundry module?

What Starter Sets Are As Good As The Full game?

Blade Runner Electric Dreams— at least based on the Foundry Module, I don’t have the physical set. It has most of the core rules built in to it. I can’t say 100% but it has a lot. Since I also own the core module, there are probably some not included but I think you could address most situations...

Opinions on this Kickstarter game - Metanthropes?

Hi qp, Thanks for the detailed response. Congrats on the early access release. It's quite possible i did pick the protagonists that have more defensive powers. I only tried it with 4 of them that I had selected at random. so I probably didn't choose one that had strong attack powers. Although...
