    AD&D: There and Back Again - a Role-Player's Tale

Can you provide the page number of that quote in the PHB or DMG? I can't seem to find it. That may be the case for 3.5, but it wasn't in the 1st Edition rulebooks.

    AD&D: There and Back Again - a Role-Player's Tale

Let me show you some examples of the differences between 1st and 3rd Editions. Regardless of how people "played" the game, these are stated in the rulebook. AD&D (An example of a Character at level 1): Opening a Door: 1d6 vs 2 Bend Bars: 1d100 vs 10 Picking a Pocket*: 1d100 vs 30 Open Lock*...

AD&D Online Chat Based Game Needs Players!!!!

I've only played 1E, but I'd be willing to play as a Thief. I'm available to play just about any night after 7:00 Eastern.

NoVa Oldschooler looking for group 1/2e AD&D

Have you considered playing online using Skype, Maptools, Gametable (my personal fav) or mIRC? Heck, I'd be willing to play on just a basic chat-room or something. I think it's going to be really difficult to find a group who lives geographically close enough to you to play in person.

    Things I Miss....

This is the main reason why I like the older art more than the newer art. The characters on the AD&D PHB cover look like real people turned adventurers. They look very squishy and mortal, like something could kill them at any moment. The 4E people look like they came off of Saturday Morning...

    AD&D: There and Back Again - a Role-Player's Tale

Pawsplay: I completely understand the point you're trying to make. Yes, Gygax made suggestions, as you rightly quote, describing instances where the DM will have to referee situations not prescribed on an already-defined table, but you're missing my point. Let me phrase it a different way...

    AD&D: There and Back Again - a Role-Player's Tale

Except that the rules state that a player can do anything else not defined in the tables using made-up target DCs. That's why there is an explicit "D20 vs DC" mechanic built into 3E - it's for everything NOT in the rule book In AD&D, if it wasn't defined by the rules it meant that it wasn't...

    Things I Miss....

I don't really "miss" these things, because I've found my new love in AD&D and I am now playing it all the time. But, boy, where do I begin? There is so much that I love in the old-school game. The most blatant thing I loved was the art. To this day, I have never seen a cover so evocative...

    AD&D: There and Back Again - a Role-Player's Tale

I suppose it all comes down to interpreting what the "spirit" of the game is, in a similar way we try to interpret what is meant in the US Constitution. In my opinion, the current/modern "spirit of the game" (the "game" meaning any system that deals in DM generated DCs) is one where a player is...

    AD&D: There and Back Again - a Role-Player's Tale

True, but the difference is that 3E DCs are made up by the DM (prone to error, favoritism, and many other subjective factors), whereas AD&D "DCs" were hard numbers in a table for each specific situation. In AD&D a player, more often then not, either succeeds or he fails. In 3E a player can...

    AD&D: There and Back Again - a Role-Player's Tale

Oh, and before anyone says, "well you could just as easily tell the Fighter he couldn't climb the wall in 3rd Edition", more power to you, but doing so would be against the spirit of 3rd Edition. 3E -encourages- players to do practically anything they want and you're unreasonably expected as...

    AD&D: There and Back Again - a Role-Player's Tale

I understand where you're coming from, but for those who say AD&D was a "free-wheeling" system, I still have to greatly disagree with that. I first have to ask you to show me where on your character sheet the DC is for opening doors, hiding in shadows, and sneaking? In 3e, this doesn't exist...

    AD&D: There and Back Again - a Role-Player's Tale

What follows is a somewhat long-winded personal story of my journey to RPG Nirvana, and how I got there. First let me get some of my personal RPG gaming background out of the way. I was among the class of kids that never got to play D&D growing up. My mother was avidly against D&D and, like...

Yeah...okay you're still missing my point... Nevermind, you know what, forget that I even asked.

    Random Generator Printout

Thanks for the advice, but you missed my point. I DO NOT want a computer generated random list. I want a "physical" booklet to hold in my hand that has random tables for use "during" my games. The point is that I want to be able to very quickly generate random stuff on the fly during a game...

    Random Generator Printout

I am a big fan of using randomly generated resources in my Pen and Paper games. I typically take the random "thing" (whatever that may be - item, creature, loot, etc) and manipulate it just enough to have it make sense in my campaign, or allow it to create a story of its own. For example, in a...

Pathfinder 1E [ONLINE] Pathfinder: Worlds Largest Dungeon

Hey guys I am sorry to say this, but I'm going to be putting the game on hiatus for the foreseeable future. I have had some personal obligations come up all of a sudden that need addressing. I am really sorry. There may be a possibility that we can pick the game up again sometime down the...

I just got dropped from the game, can't reconnect. Anyway, I guess we'll call it a night sorry we didn't get too far.

Pathfinder 1E [ONLINE] Pathfinder: Worlds Largest Dungeon

I just posted our campaign on Obsidian Portal. I think this may be a better place to discuss the game as it offers a lot more management features. I can add each of you as players if you sign up and then send me a PM through their site. There's not much there yet, but I'll be posting updates...
