Yeah, you can play 4E without a grid but it does lose something without a way to visually track positioning. Though honestly, I prefer to have a grid even in 5E because I've never liked playing the 'am I in range' and 'do I have enough movement to reach them' edition of 20 Questions.

I feel like I'm so far out of the loop. I've heard the word 'thug' all my life and it just referred to a big violent criminal irrespective of race. Sure, it could be a street gang member, but it could just as easily be a mafia goon or a neo-nazi brawler.

D&D has had official purple dragons since at least 2E. They breathe plasma (or psychotropic gas in 4E). Also the Purple Dragon Knights don't actually ride purple dragons, but amethyst ones.

If the player doesn't know something about the monster, they can roll a relevant knowledge check. If they do know, it's up to them how they want to play the character's knowledge or ignorance of the topic.

I mean sensing dishonesty and lies of omission can be a valid use of insight. But it's not infallible, nor is it mind reading.
