What is your favorite Roleplaying tip?

My favourite tip is found in the Afterword of the DMG:

How open are you about playing DnD?

I'm like the St. Cuthbert of gamers, grabbing passers-by on the street and screaming at them, "I PLAY D&D, HOW ABOUT YOU???!!!". You'd be surprised how many people vigourously nod and say, "Sure, sure, buddy, whatever you say. I play dead too!" True story! :p

    Historical Importance...D&D

No wonder Herb's advice never got Robilar to the moon! Rob should have taken his findings with a grain of salt, given what a dill-y of a situation that Herb was in!

    a question of balance

Balance schmalance. As DM, I ensure many opportunities for every PC to be killed. ;)

    Historical Importance...D&D

Elise and Ernie ran the first PCs in Gary's very first game session. Elise played a Cleric. She may have been named Ahlissa, but I can't confirm for certain. Ernie played some Magic-user named "Tenser", or something. ;) And Cindy Gygax did indeed choose the names "Dungeons" and "Dragons"...

D&D deserves a better XP system

XP for killing monsters in OD&D, OAD&D, and B/E D&D is miniscule. Pit fiends were worth less than 10,000 xp on average (divide that among 4-8 8th level+ characters and see how far that gets you). Huge, ancient, spell-casting red dragons were worth a measely 7758 xp. Substantial XP awards in the...

Demon types - where did they go?

Thanks for checking the archive, Olive! For The Serge: EGG relates a little on AD&D's planar cosmology v. his original intent on this page: http://www.enworld.org/forums/showthread.php?t=71486&page=4 Now to go dig out my GTR books and follow up on what Garnfellow has told us...

What the heck is a Bohemian Ear Spoon?

No BES in the DM's Logbook, Diaglo, just one pic of the partisan with the broad axe flanges.

What the heck is a Bohemian Ear Spoon?

Here's the text from Gygax's seminal text in the UA: For those with access to this volume, the picture of the third partisan from the right closely fits with the description above.

    TSR Q&A with Gary Gygax

Hey, Gary :D! I come bearing a question re: the mechanics and cosmology of the planes in OAD&D, specifically with regard to how the manner in which they've been treated by divers designers in numerous products. Initially (earliest appearances in The Dragon, the PHB, Kuntz and Ward's Deities...

Demon types - where did they go?

Ah. Must've been on Dragonsfoot. Or...the Pied Piper Boards. Or...the old Gygax board. Or....or...or... Hm. Well, guess we'll hafta ask him. (Was there anything on the execution of Q1 Queen of the Demonweb Pits. I might've been associating his comments there with planar mechanics in...

What the heck is a Bohemian Ear Spoon?

Its included under the description of the partisan on pg. 124. :p

Demon types - where did they go?

Yep. "Drow: The "Black Elves" or drow, are only legend. They purportedly dwell deep beneath the surface in a strange subterranean realm. The drow are said to be as dark as faeries are bright and as evil as the latter are good. Tales picture them as weak fighters but strong magic-users." So...

Demon types - where did they go?

Alas, not a CS, so I can't "search" the board, but its in one of the archived Q&A threads (believe Henry moved them not so long ago). Tragically, I don't remember which one... :( (Course, you could always ask him again in the latest thread...)

Demon types - where did they go?

Yep, yep. "In defence, Pazuzu will seldom employ a weapon, preferring to send his bodyguard (typically 6 Type VI demons--not those listed in MONSTER MANUAL I--) and use his spell-like or mental (psionic) powers."

Demon types - where did they go?

I doubt the creatures of the Abyss bother with these designations, nor with any that are comprehendable to Prime Material mortals. The classifications are those given by Wizards and sages, undoubtedly--based on criteria relevant to them, not the demons. Such individualistic Chaos must have every...

Demon types - where did they go?

The DMG, natch. (Players aren't supposed to know that kind of thing!)
  18. B

Demon types - where did they go?

I don't believe Type VI demons were intended to be the Abyssal equivalent of diabolic Pit Fiend. That's an establishment of 2nd edition's MC 8 and the "Blood War". Type VIs are just that, Type VIs. Alike because of their shared characteristics, not because they fill some niche. In fact, the...

Demon types - where did they go?

Actually, the MM states that "Six are known to exist" (emphasis added). Which means that if a DM really needed them, he or she could sneak one or two more Type VIs onto the list, confounding Players who are also DMs and thus know the six "known" names. After all, there's bound to be a couple...

What are your favorite pre-3e D&D/AD&D books.

Unearthed Arcana, Deities & Demigods (with Cthulhu and Elric), and the Fiend Folio. My AD&D games just wouldn't be the same without them.
