    D&D 5E (2024) I attack the darkness!

Charlaquin explained why the targeting wasn't a problem in 2014. I'd recommend finding a way to implement that same concept in 2024. As far as the issue of disadvantage and advantage canceling each other out that was a problem I either edition. It doesn't come up much, but it can lead to...

D&D 4E What's the assumed average chance for a monster to hit a PC?

Thanks to both of you; that's quite helpful! Is there a version of that link that still has the graphs?

D&D 4E What's the assumed average chance for a monster to hit a PC?

I'm working on reverse engineering the actual rules of monster creation in 5e, and I realized that 4e math could really help me out, because it was based on research, and the 5e designers took note of that. For example, the assumed chance of a PC to hit a monster in 5e is assumed to be 65%...

    D&D 5E (2024) Fireball is a C Tier Spell

I like 3rd level combat magic to be something not terribly common. It's what makes sense in the world to me. Sure, some opponents are going to plan around the possibilty their targets have some sort of magic grenades, but most won't. I don't think most real world muggers/bandits (current or...

D&D General Read aloud text in modules: What are folks opinions about read aloud content?

When in a situation where the party has no way of knowing the actual directions, I've told them we are going to designate a certain direction as "north" (typically the one at the top of a map if there is a map) for ease of communication. It's probably reasonable to introduce boxed text in a...

    D&D 5E (2014) 2024 new multi-target spell up casting in 2014

Thanks! Yeah, the ones I know I had heard about were command and Tasha's Hideous Laughter. I only adopted the multi-target improvements, so that means command is unchanged and shouldn't be a problem. With THL, I'm guessing my proposed every second level upcasting should keep it under control.

    D&D General Limiting Utility Cantrips

Thanks! I checked my math again, and I'm actually thinking that the design intent as for them to be roughly equal. It's still conjecture, and some other analysis I'm doing should help me come up with the answer, but that's how it's looking. I hope that's right, because it's a good way to do it.

    D&D General Limiting Utility Cantrips

So, correct me if I came to a wrong conclusion about how the relative power of attack versus save cantrips work. I believed for years that attacks were more effective than saves. I mean, they are 2 points higher and you can crit, right? But then, a couple months ago, I wondered if that was...

    D&D General Limiting Utility Cantrips

The way I deal with unwanted world consequences like mending making mundane labor obsolete, is to say that "at-will" casting is a mechanical abstraction. For adventuring purposes, yes its effectively at-will. But in the world, casting a cantrip takes a significantly bigger toll on you than...

    D&D 5E (2014) 2024 new multi-target spell up casting in 2014

When I went through the 2024 spell list for things to selectively adapt to my 2014 games, I generally grabbed the changes that allow you to hit additional targets by up casting. I didn't examine those as closely as I did other changes because it conceptually seemed like it shouldn't be a...

D&D 5E (2014) What is the Deal with the Twilight Cleric?

I usually only ban subclasses if I don't like the fluff--and I often try to tweak the fluff a bit to make it fit first. Subclasses that are over or underpowered I can just fix without much trouble. After all, I paid for this and I want it to be available. After looking at it for a bit, I just...

    D&D General Limiting Utility Cantrips

I wouldn't change it, and I probably left a comment on why I think it works fine on the thread about setting off traps. But if you do feel the need to change it... Make them be castable at will, but you have to prepare them with one of your normal spell preparations to be able to cast...

    D&D 5E (2014) Am I missing something on 2014 rogue?

I occasionally see it mentioned that rogues are weak, but that hasn't been my experience. I'm wanting to find out where the difference in perspective comes from. Is it based on fighters optimizing feats like Great Weapon Master and Polearm Master? In that case, it does move them onto a whole...

D&D 5E (2024) Level adjustment from 3.5 and how to handle it in 5(.5)E?

I'm planning on eventually coming up with some way to convert monsters into PCs. My thought is that you start with a monster and it counts as a certain level. Then you can add class levels or maybe more monster levels. Have to figure out what changes are made when it converts to PC. I'm not...

    D&D 5E (2014) Eldritch Knight/Bladesinger Multiclass War Magic-Extra attack class features

Despite the fact that those were both technically valid subclasses at the same time, I don't think they should be used together. Original 5e Bladesinger (which I liked better than the revised version) had no such feature. When they changed it (unnecessarily vastly increasing it's melee damage...

    D&D 5E (2024) Fireball is a C Tier Spell

My first experience with fireball is something I still consider one of my formative D&D experiences. I was playing Pool of Radiance on a Commodore 64, and ha just made 5th level and memorized this promising sounding fireball spell. I find myself in that kobold cave up north of Phlan. I cast...

    D&D General Hands slot economy

Since the rules overall aren't terribly complicated, I'll just go through them all. This includes 2014 RAW, an imported rule from 2024, some house rules, and some interpretation of vague 2014 rules. I'm not bothering to identify which parts are which. The goals are to create a reasonable...

    D&D General Hands slot economy

These are exactly the sorts of things that do need to be addressed. In my own games I start with the RAW for "hand economy" and then tweak it for exactly that purpose. For example, with my house rules, TWF is the most powerful melee style. Therefore, the fact that they don't have any easily...

D&D 5E (2014) What could 5E do to make wealth worthwhile?

Good point, thanks! Sorry, I was being overly flippant. (Also, I haven't followed the thread, and I don't know what the state of the conversation is so far. I was mostly responding to the topic, and similar ones from the past.) Here's what I want to convey: (A) The codified rules of the game...

D&D 5E (2014) What could 5E do to make wealth worthwhile?

Well, I know that I never seem to have enough money to buy and scribe all the spells I want. A proper wizard learns every spell he possible can. And keeps a backup spellbook. Expensive components can add a reasonable cost too. Not just the consumed ones (though that can end up being one of the...
