    Multi-classing: thrill me

I'm really looking forward to my Elven Archer Ranger/Cleric. 16/16/13/10/10/8 point buy gets my Dex and Wis to 18 after racial bonuses, so at that point I can pretty interchangeably attack with cleric wis-based ranged powers or ranger ones. I also get some nice healing powers. Holy symbol...

    D&D 4E 4e and 1 combat a day

I would recommend two things directed relating to your problems: one for the DM and one for you and your fellow players. And then one thing in general for the whole group. For the players: Make an effort to intentionally limit yourselves. Treat combat the same way you'd treat RP. Would your...

    high level attack bonuses?

Also keep in mind what was mentioned above. Atropal's are *elite* monsters. Elites are designed to be harder to hit than average. Meaning, you should be getting less than 50% change to hit them. When my perfectly useable level 3 dwarf paladin was fighting a solo, I had to roll 16+ to hit...

    Wall Effects

*This It honestly doesn't really say one way or another, but I interpret this part of the wall rule to mean that you can stack blocks on top of one another. And if you can, then it seems that those blocks must come from the total number. That's just personal interpretation, and how I would...

    Wall Effects

Hmm, I disagree. I just read the wall entry in the combat section and it doesn't seem to suggest that at all. From how I read this power, it looks like you've basically got 8 blocks of wall to play with, with a max height limit of four. So basically you can make a wall 1 sq high and 8 sq's...

    Boom?

What Clockwork Ninja said. Close is a keyword with certain effects. One of which is that it doesn't provoke OA's. There are also powers (I believe, and if there aren't currently I'm sure there will be) that trigger off of "Close" attacks, or require you to use a "close" attack, or whatever...

    Lay on Hands and CHA

Maybe confusion on their part or on the part of the person they responded to? I've seen a lot of talk back and forth about how the WotC reps gave conflicting information, but nobody's actually posted the conflicting emails anywhere, or gave names of who said what or anything. For all we know...

    Shouldn't most Rituals be free?

That looks pretty decent. I personally like the gold cost because it means I can give out ritual components as treasure. "500 gold and 100 gold in arcane components" just seems more interesting to me than "600 gold".

    Shouldn't most Rituals be free?

Honestly, look at D20 modern. Since it's d20 so you won't need to spend much time figuring out the rules. There's basically a "wealth" skill-type-thing and when you want to purchase something you roll against that.

    Shouldn't most Rituals be free?

Are they really fine though? Your definition and mine are different. You said "Tenser's floating disk" should be free? Why is that? Doesn't that devalue the Strength stat? Why should any wizard take a str above 8 if every wizard can cast tensers for free? In the vast majority of games...

    Shouldn't most Rituals be free?

This was a simplicity thing, I would guess. Yes, they could have fifteen different sub-systems for various rituals (some cost, some have cooldowns, some have some other control method). Instead they chose the one that seemed to work best for the whole group. One system, one set of rules, much...

    Shouldn't most Rituals be free?

This is a game-balance issue. Take "Detect Secret Doors", for example. If it only took a moment, and was free, why *wouldn't* you use it, all the time? And if the wizard is detecting all the secret doors, then what good is it to have a ranger or rogue with high perception to find them...

    Understanding Combat Healing

Actually, this is not entirely true. I was reading the combat section of the PHB and under "Healing a Dying Character" (pg 295), it mentions something interesting. If you are unconcious, with no surges left, and something heals you that would trigger a surge you simply heal to 1 hp.

    D&D 4E Important 4e Charts and Reference

On that note... Something we've been using for a while that really seems helpful: Notecards. Have each player do one with his name, passive perception and insight, and Initiative modifier. If you get the bigger cards, you can generally fit an entire monter stat block on each one, with...

Where did my options go? - The New Paradigm

Because the designers realized that the vast majority of D&D games involve combat, regularly. If you don't want any combat at all, you're probably not playing D&D in the first place. Now, given that basic premise, they took away the option to screw yourself over by having to choose between...

Where did my options go? - The New Paradigm

As you said, WotC. Why? Because it gives each class a specific focus in combat. Each class has a thing to do. They can tailor all the combat powers in each class to do that thing. Thus, you can't accidentally make a character that can't accomplish his class's combat role. This has been...

Where did my options go? - The New Paradigm

Ack! You've discovered my secret! I don't care one bit about the gish character, never have. It's not my thing. I'm only curious to see how they handle the 50/50 split concept so that I can see how they'll hopefully later introduce the splits I'm more interested in (cleric/thf ftw!).

    Harvesting Components

I think the suggested rule would be something like "Make it part of their treasure parcel" So instead of just saying "You kill the hydra and find 1000 gold", you can say "you kill the hydra and find 750 gold, and then from its body you can scavenge 250 gold in arcane ritual components".

Where did my options go? - The New Paradigm

Agreed! It's time to redefine our terminology. In 4e, "multiclass" means to take those extra feats that allow some dabbling in the other class's powers. If you want a true 50/50 split type class, you need a whole class to accurately represent that. The design goal looks like it was to make...
