Daggerheart Review: The Duality of Robust Combat Mechanics and Freeform Narrative

No, it's fully 100%. The duality dice either roll "with hope"(hope die higher), "with fear" (fear die higher), or critical success (same number on both). There's no such thing as just a regular success or failure.

What do YOU plan on doing with Daggerheart?

Would be willing to try out a game or two, but there's a lot of things about the system I really do not like. It pretty much smashes you over the head with dissociated mechanics, for example. I also do not much care for what I've seen of the armor and hp/damage system. And I feel like all too...

    D&D 5E (2014) DM Advice: Running a "Climactic" Combat

I would avoid both offscreen battles and at least the appearance of making the climatic battle between Vecna and the fey Queens being unalterable by the PCs. From a narrative standpoint, you want to make the PCs feel like they are an active part of the events going on in your game world, not as...

D&D General An Atlantean Empire who are it's people and what are their capabilities?

Not so much, actually. Wood rots exceptionally slowly in anaerobic conditions. Same reason one finds thousand-year-old bodies buried in bogs occasionally.

D&D General Read aloud text in modules: What are folks opinions about read aloud content?

As a DM who regularly forgets to describe details that are intended to be in a given location, it's nice to have stuff blocked out. That said, surprise surprise particular instances of writing can be good or bad. And trying to describe or DM on autopilot is a recipe for errors.

D&D General Sandbox style: Rumors say a +1 sword is in a cave nearby. Go get it?

As others have said, it doesn't need to be THE legendary sword of King Dragos himself. But it could be the glowing sword of that knight who came through here a couple years back. Had kind eyes that one, pity about him. The sword was etched in fine silver, as I recall, with a glittering amber...

D&D General An Atlantean Empire who are it's people and what are their capabilities?

The empire is secretly run by a cabal of aboleths who bioengineer various species and monstrosities in their efforts to destroy the (terrestrial) gods. The aboleths have set up a blasphemous imperial religion using one of their creations - krakens - as divine figureheads ruling the smaller and...

D&D 5E (2024) Earthdawn races for Dnd 2024, views welcomed.

Dodge on bonus action (windling) is NOT balanced by slightly reduced HP and damage.

D&D General Should Gnomes be Tiny

Being tiny does NOT make Gnomes easier to cook. It makes them have less meat per unit time spent butchering; or alternately per count of Murder.

D&D General How the heck do you fight a medieval war in winter?

It's not medieval, but... Sad, really, as one cannot help but suspect that the guy should have known better.

    D&D General Ships & spellcasters

It's probably worth mentioning that the real-life range of cannons and ballistae is very significantly greater than that of a Fireball spell. Even using grapeshot. (On the order of like 500 to 1000 yards as opposed to 150 feet). Though I'd imagine that fireball would still be a fairly...

D&D 5E (2024) Is Combat Tedious on Purpose?

On top of 1) making rests exceptionally difficult to prevent via spells like the ritual-cast Tiny Hut and 2) the nearly complete removal of ANY lasting adverse condition. So that there's essentially no stakes. It truly and honestly disgusts me.

D&D 5E (2024) Downtime activity: Weapon Mastery Crafting

I've occasionally included various special techniques and abilities that can be learned by martial characters. For example: from rare books, from retired or legendary heroes, from spiritual personifications of battle (like Valkyries or Furies or einherjar), from the spirits of legendary...

    D&D 5E (2024) Wights and Life Drain

Yeah, this has long been my favorite way to handle life drain; and it seems so logical and intuitive that I'm actually disappointed that WotC decided to double down on max hp reduction instead. I'd also consider giving most monsters that drain life advantage on their next attack roll / ability...

D&D 5E (2024) Help me make a cool Worg villain.

With the minor issue that they canonically are focused on devouring goblin souls. If one bothers with the lore. Though I guess maybe it could be upset that the party murdered its meal and let the soul get away.

D&D 5E (2024) Help me make a cool Worg villain.

Some ideas to use or ignore: Call it something menacing, like Throatripper. The beast has a hunting obsession and wants to see the party suffer. So it tracks and follows them for days or weeks. It tries to lure dangerous monsters and predators toward the party, such as by making noise with...

    D&D 5E (2024) D&D Marilith Is Far More Bestial In 2025

I'm flabbergasted and honestly somewhat curious as to how this subject has somehow spawned 50+ pages? I don't mind the bestial look the slightest little bit. Nor would I be terribly offended if there were now somehow male Mariliths. And even if I were - demons are the spiritual...

D&D 5E (2014) What could 5E do to make wealth worthwhile?

I'm not intimately familiar with Shadowdark's carousing mechanics. But it's just as easy to introduce longer-term gold sinks that operate under similar principles. Maybe a PC is trying to funnel money to the Rebellion. Or fund an orphanage. Or raise a temple. Or buy an expensive business so...
