D&D 5E (2014) What could 5E do to make wealth worthwhile?

I don't personally find it that difficult or complicated to incentivise stuff like that. Downtime... or just time passing really.. allows the DM to introduce events that make stuff like having castles worthwhile. Keeps can serve to protect the town if goblins come raiding while the PCs are...

D&D General Feats are in. What is the current feel about multiclassing?

One sees it occasionally in my games - couple levels of rogue to add some skill versatility and maybe a little more punch to a martial char. Or a couple levels of full caster to expand spell use on a partial caster. Warlock for stuff like Devil's Sight. Has a long history in the game, helps...

Fling poison spines at those who not phrase things to their exacting, arbitrary, and often inconsistent standards?

D&D 5E (2014) Spellcasting Monsters, Spell Slotlessness, Bonus Actions, and Intent

Even if it's allowed under the rules, it's a terrible idea to do so since the players cannot. Having the monsters operate under clearly different standards tends to lead to bad outcomes in my 30+ year gaming experience. Essentially the practice undermines the sense of trust and perception of...

D&D 5E (2014) What could 5E do to make wealth worthwhile?

Stuff players can do with money in my present campaign: (Buy or commission magic items, of course) Buy property Construct, expand, or contract the construction of buildings on that property. Purchase exotic creatures, like griffons. Hire experts to train said creatures Commission sages to...

D&D General Reification versus ludification in 5E/6E

Also: Have a much smaller stat block. One of the consequences of "no empty levels" design is that direct one-to-one PC class conversions fill up with a plethora of abilities that are cumbersome to write out and that most NPCs are unlikely to ever use. 1e/2e characters were much simpler...

    D&D 5E (2014) 2024 D&D is 2014 D&D with 4E sprinkled on top

Go ahead and tell that to the orderlies at the "mad mages" wing of the local sanitarium. I DARE you. I mean, when they get old and weak and mentally unstable, a fighter can STILL be disarmed. After which they're much less dangerous and do NOT burn everything flammable around them. Unless...

    D&D 5E (2024) Lycanthropes in the MM

I don't really like the 2024 implementation. It just doesn't feel...evocative to me? I'm not sad to see the immunity against non-magic / silvered weapons go as that resulted in some tedious battles; though I think SOME sort of resistance to normal damage should have been kept for thematic...

D&D General Reification versus ludification in 5E/6E

And yet moving away from that model offended mass numbers of players, caused the greatest schism the hobby has ever known, and spawned what remains today the second most popular of all TTRPGs. Moving back towards that model is what returned market share to 5e. Circling back toward the...

D&D General Reification versus ludification in 5E/6E

Presumably, since neither Halflings nor Ogres normally or inherently possess that ability, that would be through skill and training. Any number of reasonably obvious ways. Do you REALLY need examples? Since the Brute ability does not actually specify how or why the extra damage occurs, we'll...

D&D General Reification versus ludification in 5E/6E

Because that would be unbalanced as a racial ability. However, martial advantage works just fine in a game world if considered to be a class ability. Narratively speaking, something like: Most hobgoblin societies delight in warfare; and force their young to train in weapon use from the moment...

D&D General Reification versus ludification in 5E/6E

It creates a host of plot holes and narrative inconsistencies if and when, for example, a hobgoblin is able to blast something with a bazooka for 15 damage; but then pulls out a tiny, metal sewing needle yet is still to poke things for 15 damage. Without a very good in-game explanation...

D&D 5E (2014) For those playing 2014 5e, how are you reacting to the 2024 update?

Also from the 2024 MM: Higher CR pirate officers get a very significant base weapon damage multiplier on each attack...for no in-game rational, explicable reason. Which incidentally means that the pistol attacks of a CR 12 Pirate Admiral NPC deal exactly as much damage on average as the...

    D&D 5E (2024) Help With Kitsune Species

I would give them a Suggestion spell-like ability. (Maybe available at 5th level if you're making them into a PC race). And maybe add the following to their Shapeshifting ability: "Kitsune are unable to transform their tails when shapeshifting. And must hide their tails physically, such as...

D&D 5E (2014) For those playing 2014 5e, how are you reacting to the 2024 update?

To each their own. For whatever reason, Mending is one of the most commonly taken cantrips in the 5e games I've been running... so this would mean the penalties are unlikely to remain more than a single combat. Which makes the degradation effect too inconsequential IMHO.

D&D 5E (2014) For those playing 2014 5e, how are you reacting to the 2024 update?

I was initially hopeful about the 2024 ruleset. While the 2024 PHB featured notable power creep and significant nerfing or near complete removal of several classes of spells (such as summoning) I felt that the changes overall were beneficial. Summoning was, for example, often time consuming...

D&D 5E (2024) Are the new default alignments of Goblins (CN) and Kobolds (N) more consistent with their current portrayals?

On the flip side of this, enemies that attack the party on sight are fairly infrequent in my games. One will occasionally meet stuff like hungry monsters hunting for a meal or supernatural foes like undead that have innate compulsions to kill; and maybe the odd ambush / mugging attempt - but...

D&D 5E (2024) Are the new default alignments of Goblins (CN) and Kobolds (N) more consistent with their current portrayals?

In my present campaign, about half the party have set up a base in a small hamlet they previously saved. One of the PCs is a kobold, who has slowly been attracting and collecting other kobolds. The newly forming kobold colony keeps tunnelling through peoples' basements, stealing shiny objects...
