D&D 5E (2024) What is With Poison?, and Other PHB Conundrums.

It's a matter of opportunity cost- an alchemical item that deals 2d6 damage but replaces an attack likely doesn't affect DPR much. Nor does a one-use spell item that, say, deals 3d8 instead of ALL your attacks in a particular round (depending on character level). Even though 2d6 or 3d8 are...

D&D 5E (2024) What is With Poison?, and Other PHB Conundrums.

I suspect that part of the designers' rationale for the price of "basic poison" is that the damage isn't JUST +1d4. It's another 1d4 over and above what the players can normally inflict with weapons. Even so, 100 gp seems unrealistic and prohibitive for use in actual play. I'm not sure I'd...

D&D 5E (2024) What is With Poison?, and Other PHB Conundrums.

Hey, whatever's fun for you. In my personal experience though- 1) When you're not familiar with the PCs' abilities beforehand, you get to disrupt the story and make everyone else at the table wait while you figure them out upon use during play. On top of all the other things a DM needs to be...

D&D 5E (2014) Your Favorite Sandbox Support Materials

Mostly just monster manuals and such for me personally. Along with the occasional internet search engine to research real world, historical, or mythological homologs for various elements. There used to be some threads devoted to encounter ideas on these boards, which I think might be useful...

    Thanks! Did not know that.

D&D 5E (2024) What is With Poison?, and Other PHB Conundrums.

You CAN, of course, focus on familiarizing yourself with the specific options your players chose rather than memorizing every SINGLE possibility, naturally...

D&D 5E (2024) What is With Poison?, and Other PHB Conundrums.

Everyone has their own particular tastes and playstyles and all, but... I'd still highly recommend that you start considering it your job. It's impossible to balance challenges and encounters for your players if you don't know what they're capable of.

    D&D General On Humble Bundle

Just randomly curious: What issues do you have with Frog God (Games)?

    D&D 5E (2014) Does Dungeonhacking work in 5e?

Darkvision still imposes light obscurement in areas of darkness. I can't speak for any other DMs, but I treat this as the periphery of headlight or flashlight beams. That is, it shows silhouettes and gleams from eyes but little other detail. It will show the gross overall contours of walls...

D&D General An Overview of Furry-Friendly D&D/Pathfinder/OSR Settings

Eberron has a species of lycanthrope-relatives called Shifters as a playable character option that could function pretty well for a variety of furry types.

D&D General Running a Monster Hunter style protracted hunt and staged battle against a dragon

Perhaps the dragon lairs in the ruined temple of an ancient deity or set of spirits. Entities that once considered the beast sacred and warded it against attacks from most weapons. At various places in the temple lie broken tablets and monoliths that give clues to how the ancient warding can...

    D&D 5E (2014) Dread Farmer, a revamped class of a class that I made.

My most immediate concern is: Why exactly is a Harvest Moon helping you teleport, dodge attacks, and/or make people afraid? Those don't immediately come across to ME, at least, as thematically Harvest Moonish or harvest spirit/god/entity-like effects.

    D&D General Are You There D&D? It's Me, J.R.R. Tol-KEEEEN!

Twelve pages? In the empty shell of a Snarf-shaped husk? For shame, people, for shame. No, I'm not angry Just disappointed.

    D&D 5E (2014) The "General Nature" of a Trap

I'd give the caster a general description of the effects: "Releases a scything blades", "collapses a ceiling", "expels poison gas". Hopefully including a clue as to what features it is likely attached to, but not spelling it out directly.

D&D 5E (2024) How Important Is The Lore

Campaign background lore is essential in games I run - I expect the PCs to make decisions and formulate strategies based upon it. I am glad that some general monster and world lore exists in published books. While I reserve the right as DM to make alterations, having a general body of common...

D&D 5E (2024) Check Out The New Monster Manual’s Ancient Gold Dragon

I'm a little worried that they may have nerfed dragon breath damage across the board. I note that the Summon Dragon spell from the PHB2024 has a truly anemic breath weapon (2d6 for like a 5th level spell slot); that is theoretically balanced by being interchangeable with a melee attack during a...

    D&D General Best dungeons?

The Crater Ridge mines really weren't intended to be fully cleared IMO. I like...the occasional targeted foray into a mega-dungeon. But as a major campaign focus or feature I find they get pretty tedious.

    D&D General Best dungeons?

I think Forge of Fury and Lost Shrine of Tamoachan were pretty good. And the original Tomb of Horrors 👹 (under the right circumstances). It's been decades but I remember liking Castle Greyhawk. I never did understand the love for the Sunless Citadel though - thought that one was boring.

D&D 5E (2024) Help Me Hate Monks (Less Than I Currently Do)

It is, of course, easy enough to just invent or reskin a more European-themed fighting monk. Perhaps something like a militant friar, devoted to defending the poor without expensive (/knightly) weapons or armor. Say...the Custos Mendicans of St. Cuthbert (the...err Greyhawk version)...
