How Visible To players Should The Rules Be?

Also: immersion exists only as an internal sensation with no defined definition. It is impossible for a game rule, or anything at all, to inherently encourage or discourage immersion. You either experience it or you don't, and you may engage with certain rules in a way that promotes it within...

How Visible To players Should The Rules Be?

some of you truly need to read any game not in the dnd lineage. not even play, just read and comprehend any other framework that isn't built around "what's the number i need to roll to to hit this goblin"

    Looking for something new

Check out Armour Astir: Advent or Songs for the Dusk - both games blend science fiction and fantasy in fun ways (Armour Astir being a high fantasy game of mechs and revolution, and Songs for the Dusk being a science fantasy game about developing a community amidst the threats of the...

Pathfinder 1E Are there compelling reasons to upgrade to PF1 from 3.0?

Giving a big ol' anti-recommend to d20pfsrd. The dude running the site mixes in 3rd party stuff with official, makes up his own stuff and puts it in options lists, shoved the classes from Occult Mysteries in the "alternate rulesets" tab with a bunch of 3rd party books because he doesn't like...

    Is TTRPGing an "Expensive Hobby"

Most good games out there are like 10-20 bucks. No force on earth will make me spend 150 dollars on entertainment, even if I end up being the one to buy games that I wanna check out.

SORA AI Technology Preview: We are Entering a Golden Age of Chaos

It's always funny when people are like "humanity is inherently evil and doomed!" and just cite the values of capitalism as their evidence and assume capitalism is somehow inherent to humans. There was already a way to make stock video, it's called "record some video". No reason to also hand...

What is/are your most recent TTRPG purchase(s)?

SORA AI Technology Preview: We are Entering a Golden Age of Chaos

And how does making a video do that?

SORA AI Technology Preview: We are Entering a Golden Age of Chaos

So cool to have a leap forward in a technology that consumes disgusting amounts of resources to operate, is powered by plagiarism, and whose only conceivable applications are to either scam people or to make extremely illegal pornography.

Why PCs should be competent, or "I got a lot of past in my past"

Right, but nobody's talking about that? The story that happens during is built on what the players do in it. I'm asking what you mean by that not being story - do you think when peopel talk about making stories they're like, prewriting everything their characters do and then all share it? I'm...

    Just saw Delicious in Dungeon

Well, as they say, "watch and information will be revealed". You can also just go read the manga- i t's gorgeous. Also, it never gets less "Delicious" - this is a story about food, and consumption, and desire, and hunger, and the fact that everything you will ever eat was once alive.

Why PCs should be competent, or "I got a lot of past in my past"

That's the same thing, though? Everything that happens in play is definitionally part of the story.

Ben Riggs Interview on the Death of the Golden Age

It's certainly good to get reinforcement of the belief that he doesn't know a damn thing about nothing.

Sketch of Generic Power Rules for Blades in the Dark

Check out Glamour of Our Youth, an FitD game that operates pretty similarly to this for magic spells. Not 1:1 but a good resource for inspiration, probably.

    Just saw Delicious in Dungeon

Thrilled that one of the deepest and most dramatic manga of the last decade is getting an adaptation that is 1. actually good 2. not being ruined by NEtflix's standard inept "put every episode up at once so people never talk about it again after a week" model.

"Oddities" in fantasy settings - the case against "consistency"

A TTRPG setting can be consistent but also anyone can change anything they want about it because they are made up and only exist for you to tell stories with your friends in.

"Oddities" in fantasy settings - the case against "consistency"

I'm amused at how most of the negative experiences in this thread seem to mostly be "we started a game where nobody had any kind of conversation about what characters they would play and then continued to not have a conversation after we felt like it had negative consequences". Truly, talking...

D&D General Jaquaying the dungeon - a term to avoid

There's no "making up" here. She asked him to spell her name correctly, he refused, she asked him to use her real first name, he spends 6 years not doing so and then whines about how he's doing her a favor by using her deadname? If he's not transphobic, then he's a selfish tool.

    Suspension of disbelief and education

I simply do not approach fiction in this way. Whywould you care if a dragon's wings let it fly or a bullet can go further than it would in real life? It's not real life. It's fiction.

Recurring silly comment about Apocalypse World and similar RPGs

Can anyone point me to the rule in DnD that says if you swallow a big rock it'll mess up your stomach? There's no explicit text saying so, so I assume I can eat a whole bunch of rocks and experience no negative effects.
