    Need some DM help.

This is a great learning opportunity for you, I think :). Lessons: 1) If someone shows up at the table with a character, take a look at it first. 2) If a known min-maxer shows up at the table with a character, take a very hard look at it first. 3) Make it well-known to players that your rules...

    Need some DM help.

This is a big warning sign. I'd suggest the following conversational points: Characters must not overshadow the rest of the party. Currently he's stealing the spotlight from other players. You're running the game, which means you're responsible ultimately for what happens in the world. He...

    DM forced to spread attacks

I'm sorry to say, this whole argument is irrelevant. Mosquitos and tse-tse flies aren't animals. They're vermin. ;)

    Master of Illusions Prestige Class

I've been playing with some ideas to make illusions more powerful, and I thought it'd make sense to put them in a prestige class. Here are my brief thoughts on the subject: Skills: require some ranks in bluff and craft (painting). 7 ranks in each? Feats: Greater Spell Focus (illusion) and...

    DM forced to spread attacks

Agreed with most of the above, but with a few provisos: 1) Some maddened opponents, as well as some stupid ones, use a revenge script for their attack choices. Basically, they attack someone who just hurt them. This allows PCs to use wolfpack tactics, in which they can somewhat control whom...

Spell completion and spell trigger and save questions

I think you're confusing spellcraft (figure out a spell as it's cast) with knowledge: arcana (figure out what a currently-existing spell is). This is a change from 3.5, IIRC. The argument against spellcrafting wands is that spell triggers are different from spell completion and spellcasting in...

Spell completion and spell trigger and save questions

Thanks! It may help to link to the relevant rules for the questions I have: Figment rules Spell Trigger rules Spellcraft rules My guesses above are based on my understanding of how these rules intersect. And I agree with you about not looking rules up in play. I'm asking these questions...

Spell completion and spell trigger and save questions

Hi, folks! I have a couple of questions about wands and saves and spellcraft: 1) I cast a minor image of a wall. An enemy makes his spellcraft check and walks right through it. I use my wand to create a minor image. Does the enemy get a spellcraft check? (I don't think so, since it's a...

    Question about Burning Hands

Burning hands would, if it set people on fire, be far more useful than it should be. Already it's a first-level area-of-effect leveled-damage save-for-half spell, the only one in core rules (I think). It'll almost certainly force a concentration check for a caster if done as a readied action...

    Sorcerer Damage Spells

To echo what others have said, casters are great vs. big crowds. Fighters are great against big toughies. I'm playing a wizard, and I'm eschewing damage spells almost entirely (create pit is my only direct-damage spell), but my ability to buff allies and debuff enemies is invaluable...

Pathfinder 1E Some illusion spells for Pathfinder

If you were to make a list of spells never ever cast, Hallucinatory Terrain is at the top of the list (here's where I have my secret list of people that are guaranteed to pop in telling about the awesome time they cast that spell in a campaign--yeah, yeah, with the exception of your game...

Pathfinder 1E Some illusion spells for Pathfinder

I'm playing a pathfinder illusionist, and I'd love to create some nifty new spells. I'll throw out drafts here for discussion/criticism/blatant mockery. Here's the first one, inspired by a great sequence in one of the Dresden Files novels: Notes: 1) Obviously it's modeled off Mirror...

    Adjudicating Illusion magic

Why add a level or two--do you think that creating features that move independently is more powerful than mirror image? Especially if it requires concentration (as seems likely, given similar spells), it seems at best as powerful as mirror image.

    Adjudicating Illusion magic

Project image is wayyyy more powerful than what I'm looking at for that; rather, I think of it as a variant of mirror image, with less dice-based defensive power and more confuse-the-enemy potential.

    Adjudicating Illusion magic

Rules-savvy player, checking in :). I'm happy to have to use more spells to accomplish my ideas, and for them to be higher level. But how I'd like to build the character is toward complete repainting of the battlefield: trolls fighting us in a dungeon would suddenly see themselves on a...

    Powergamer Issues

Rulesmonkey: Here's the template for folks that are interested. There are some thing about it I notice. First, and less importantly, it's a fan creation. Although a DM is always allowed to ban anything he wants from his game, fan creations get extra-special attention when deciding what to...

Question about Warlord class in Tome of Secrets

I'm writing up a level 2 warlord for a one-shot game. In the pathfinder SRD, the table grants the "hold the line" ability at second level, but in the description, "hold the line" is granted at level 3. I've checked the errata for the Tome of Secrets, and I'm not seeing anything on it. Does...

    "Lethal" games?

Nothing, I think, beats the old Call of Cthulhu, in which Cthulhu's attack was to eat 1d6 PCs per turn.
