D&D 5E (2014) Why I Am Starting to Prefer 4d6 Drop the Lowest Over the Default Array.

Players do pick low strength fighters at character creation for a number of reasons. If you need a mechanical reason, consider the fighter who after a few levels, becomes a wizard. Suggesting that all fighters should start with a high strength doesn't make sense in all cases.

D&D 5E (2014) Why I Am Starting to Prefer 4d6 Drop the Lowest Over the Default Array.

All those OSR games with characters of varying levels are more than just traumatic, they are oppressive hierarchical nightmares. Within, higher level characters wield oppressive +5% to +15% modifiers like a scourge, inflicting incurable systemic bleeding damage.

D&D 5E (2014) Why I Am Starting to Prefer 4d6 Drop the Lowest Over the Default Array.

That might be a good option for some games, but I do know players who would be very disappointed they couldn't play a low strength fighter. A character who had no choice but to survive by his wits alone. Of course, in my games combat isn't king. What you do in the campaign and how you...

D&D 5E (2014) Why I Am Starting to Prefer 4d6 Drop the Lowest Over the Default Array.

There are some game systems that deliberately generate characters you'll never happy with mechanically. You must find it within yourself to look past the numbers.

    D&D 5E (2014) Why FR Is "Hated"

Such a simple product to make an sell and it would make FR fans happy. But I guess they need to attach a grand story to it.... IMO, WotC needs to be a bit more flexible with their business model.

D&D 5E (2014) Why I Am Starting to Prefer 4d6 Drop the Lowest Over the Default Array.

Why do you always make outlandish assertions? They are not arguments. My point is that the game doesn't assume the balanced playing field you're comfortable with across all situations of play. There will be sessions in which your character just can't compete on a level playing field. In...

D&D 5E (2014) Why I Am Starting to Prefer 4d6 Drop the Lowest Over the Default Array.

As a player, how do you handle the situation in which another character has found and is now using a +3 magical weapon? Do you also require that the DM open Santa's magical item bag for you at the same time?

D&D 5E (2014) Why I Am Starting to Prefer 4d6 Drop the Lowest Over the Default Array.

Yes, it's something to consider when a player claims to have a terrible session because the group rolled for stats. In fact, die rolls are far more to blame than anything. oh and btw, when you have DMed long enough to have witnessed a D&D house cat take out the Fighter in single combat...

D&D 5E (2014) Why I Am Starting to Prefer 4d6 Drop the Lowest Over the Default Array.

It really boils down to an ignorance of the realization problem. In D&D, the percentage chance to hit can only be realized over the span of several game sessions. Statistically we don't roll enough times in a given session. For games like XCOM2, people who know nothing about stats...

D&D 5E (2014) Why I Am Starting to Prefer 4d6 Drop the Lowest Over the Default Array.

The problem with your argument is that a few stat bonuses (+/-5% to 15%) isn't substantial enough to be noticed, at least not in the manner that your analogy suggests. It certainly isn't 99% at all. +1, +2, +3 are not equal to 99%. In addition, a character is more than his stat bonuses...

Yes, it works both ways. Some playstyles don't belong together at all.

D&D 5E (2014) Why I Am Starting to Prefer 4d6 Drop the Lowest Over the Default Array.

Why is everyone jockeying for the hero position? Why is the hero the most powerful character? Are your games more like a competition?

D&D 5E (2014) Why I Am Starting to Prefer 4d6 Drop the Lowest Over the Default Array.

You haven't even rolled yet and you're already complaining and drawing hyperbolic conclusions. It's an outrageous and unsubstantiated claim that characters with lower stats are water boys who can't be Heros. Can you explain how a couple of modifiers in either direction will destroy your play...

    D&D 5E (2014) Why FR Is "Hated"

IMO, areas of the FR that are untouched by lore are an ideal compromise for a Campaign. For example, the Bloodstone Lands are a great out of the way sandbox. As for the 5e Realms, I really don't like the way WotC has been updating it. In fact, I'm still waiting for one large map of the 5e FR.

I totally agree that rolling stats is the way to go. It can actually help identify problem players before your campaign gets underway.

Unearthed Arcana Unearthed Arcana Introduces The Artifcer

5e might not have magical item shops by default, but it sure has magical item factories. Entitlement assembly lines now stretch all the way back to the previous edition. This is why UA is outlawed at my table.

Admit it! You had just as much fun reading it as I did writing it. :) yes, that's 4e. Why do I picture these players crying when he DM tells them their mark doesn't work due to the situation at hand? oh that's right, they are entitled to their entitlements. Ok so a wall of force goes up...

For the record, that's not my opinion. My disagreement is with how your lovely option is being prescribed.
