Not a bad idea, but thief has that as a rolled talent. It's annoying how many things that could work for gnomes have already been taken.

Having thought about it a few days (and played some Shadowdark in the interim) I'm souring on the idea of gnomes being able to polymorph into small animals. If those critters can't see in the dark, they're mostly useless; but if they can see in the dark, that breaks one of Kelsey's foundational...

That low ranking might be because some people in the OSR scene are butthurt (as the kids say) about Shadowdark's success.

Sorcerer could be worth having as a separate class. It just currently isn't in 5e. Give sorcs more unique spells and mechanics, and make the Sorc subclasses really distinct, and it's all good. Thankfully 1D&D is moving in that direction.

I like that! Although come to think of it, the real way to say "as a free action" Shadowdark-style is not to say it at all and just let the DM decide if it is or isn't. That's pretty much how the entire rules are written, for better or worse.

It's kind of a curated best of OSR...or maybe best of "Nu-SR". It takes good ideas from many different sources -- 5e, Black Hack, Dungeon Crawl Classics, others -- and fuses them together into a coherent whole, with a few clever takes of its own (like the carousing for XP system). No one thing...

Black Hack is twenty pages long, and Shadowdark is about 330. So SD is a lot more fleshed out, for better or worse. Essentially Shadowdark is Basic Set D&D filtered through Black Hack - or BH expanded out to Basic.

Here's my take on the barbarian class. I tried to keep it dead simple, in the Shadowdark style, but still hit all the major class tropes.

One of my favorite things about 5e is how few classes there are. I love that 5e introduces new concepts in the form of subclasses and doesn't dilute the core 12. Class bloat sucks. It makes it harder to DM when you don't know what the characters can do. And besides, "Fighter except left-handed...
