Shadowdark late pledges open on Backerkit!

This is the only way to get the Cursed Scroll zines right now, since they're "sold out" on Arcane Library's website. Just pledge one dollar and add them on.

ToV Tales of the Valiant playtest packet three is live.

Always good to see new monsters. 5e monsters were a little bland out of the gate, so it's nice to see some spicy ones.

    D&D 5E (2024) 4/26 Playtest: The Sorceror

The special sauce for sorcerers should really come in the subclasses. Those should be a good bit more different from each other than wizard subclasses, in my opinion. So it's hard to judge the sorc until we've seen more on that front. The new draconic sorcerer is a nice start, however. It's...

D&D General Thoughts on running Rappan Athuk (and deadly megadungeons in general) [SPOILERS]

Thanks for this thread. I'll be following it with in interest. How do you feel about Rappan Athuk as an adventure? I read part of it, but got really turned off by , which felt to me like Beavis and Butthead write a module. Given all the praise for RA, I assume other parts are better?

D&D 5E (2024) They butchered the warlock in the new packet

Way off topic, but... One of my favorite things about 5e is the bounded accuracy. I recall monsters in 4e having +25 to hit. I liked many things from 4e, but when the number you're adding is higher than the highest number on the die, things have gone off the rails. And if your 12th level...

D&D 5E (2024) They butchered the warlock in the new packet

I was thinking to myself that it was a shame this thread went off topic and became a debate about short rests. Then I realized that was not off topic because discussions about the warlock begin (and maybe end) with the short rest mechanic. I don't think that's a compliment to the design of the...

    Dragon Reflections #65

I remember that issue! I can still see it in my mind's eye, on the floor beside my bed. Thanks for the hit of nostalgia.

D&D 5E (2024) They butchered the warlock in the new packet

Dungeons are little black dresses: they are never out of fashion. Predictably, my current 5e campaign in The Temple of Elemental Evil (the original) is nothing like this. Each game day has lots of exploration and also at least four potential combats. Anything less wouldn't feel like a full...

D&D 5E (2024) They butchered the warlock in the new packet

I'm not taking about real life days, but game days. Yes, game days with only one or two combats are very rare in my experience. In overland travel, sure. But in a dungeon? Never. My DM won't allow a long rest unless there have been at least four encounters, and I enforce a similar rule myself...

D&D 5E (2024) They butchered the warlock in the new packet

Days are more predictable. By a lot. No DM will allow the party to take a long rest every 30 minutes, right? Admittedly, a wizard can be very overpowered in a scenario where there's only one combat or two per day. But that's very rare.

D&D 5E (2024) New One D&D Playtest Includes 5 Classes & New Weapon Mastery System

He said, and I quote: "Many warlocks end up being melee focused." Which they do! Lots of warlocks are hexblades. It's a very popular gish build. Crawford didn't say or imply that all warlocks were melee, or even most, just many. 100% accurate.

    D&D 5E (2024) 4/26 Playtest: The Fighter

I really like the new weapon abilities, but I wonder how this will affect the Battlemaster. Some of that subclass's abilities make you spend superiority dice to do things that now you can do every turn for free. The new Battlemaster will have to look a lot different to be viable.

D&D 5E (2024) They butchered the warlock in the new packet

Respectfully, I also like the old warlock but hate the short rest setup, so it's not just that poster. The current 5e warlock is great, but the fact that sometimes you get four short rests and sometimes none is not great. I don't see a contradiction there. But if it is a contradiction... I...

D&D 5E (2024) They butchered the warlock in the new packet

These are very good observations. Instead of continuing to debate this, I'm going to tip my hat to you for some well thought out points and let it go, especially since the thread had moved on. But one parting thought: all the likes on my original post suggesting warlocks use encounter powers...

D&D 5E (2024) They butchered the warlock in the new packet

That system worked very well for casters in 4e, and it works very well in 13a. Admittedly, both those games draw a hard line between combat spells and utility spells that 5e will never have (and shouldn't). Even so, what I'm suggesting not only can be done but has been done, and many of us miss...

D&D 5E (2024) They butchered the warlock in the new packet

Someone in the other thread pointed out that the Champion subclass in the playtest has an ability that can be used, quote, "once per combat". HEY WOTC! If you're letting the "combat power" cat out of the bag, that is how you re-do the warlock right there.

D&D 5E (2024) New One D&D Playtest Includes 5 Classes & New Weapon Mastery System

I like the weapon abilities a lot. Some bits I'm wary of -- for example, Vex seems incredibly strong -- but overall this is a nice buff to martials, both in power and flavor. Big thumbs up. I especially love the fact that fighters get sort of super-mastery. Makes fighters even more distinct...
