It is time to forgive WOTC and get back onboard.

Yeah, no. They still haven't apologized to the MTG community for the 30th Anniversary debacle, and this was an unforced error on their part. I'm not forgiving them for being the ones to lob the grenade into their own community's trust and goodwill, even if they're jumping on it now.

Hasbro/WotC has crossed the Trust Thermocline

So WotC backed down, but I wonder how much permanent damage has been done. It may be that the Trust Thermocline has still well and truly been crossed, since most of the reactions I'm seeing are "this is good, BUT..." and lots of people still being (rightfully, IMO) wary and still expecting 6e to...

The new OGL 1.2, What is Victory?

We won, and so did they. :sneaky:

WotC Backs Down: Original OGL To Be Left Untouched; Whole 5E Rules Released as Creative Commons

We'll see how honest they're being, to be sure. But this means the people in WotC who didn't want to change things won the internal battle. So we now watch to see if they follow through on putting stuff in the CC.

    Just reposting from Heath's Geekverse

Why are you trusting their word on this? WotC's word is worthless unless done in a way that is legally binding.

What is the most scathing feedback you left?(+)

I worked some version of "cease & desist in your illegal attempt to deauthorize and effectively revoke the OGL 1.0a" into every field. When I got to the part specifically about the deuathorization, I put: (That last bit was me filling in the box with that message) When I got to the part...

Critical Role A key part of Linda Codegas Critical Role Interview

Of all the statements on the current state of affairs, it's certainly one of them.

    Don't Give Ground

Considering how far into "D&D give you literal brain damage" Edwards jumped, talking about him is always kinda...fraught.

The OGL: Why is this really happening, and what to do now...

That's assuming there's only rules in the collective OGC, which is a tough case to make. As people have noted numerous times, IP laws are complicated and "rules can't be copywritten" is a generalization that doesn't necessarily apply to games as complicated as RPGs, especially the RPGs where the...

WotC's growing pattern of broken promises

Fair enough. The RL is a big ol' ball of argle-bargle at the best of times, because there's two sides to it that are equally vehement about it and have mutually exclusive goals. I only brought it up because they broke it in a way that, impressively, made no one happy.

WotC's growing pattern of broken promises

I dunno, I think the broken promises of MTG are another symptom of the same issue. I'd forgotten about the flap around the mechanically unique cards being box toppers -- and it happened in 2018, a couple years after Chris Cocks became the WotC CEO. That was right around the time his thumbprint...

I think we'll need to see what his body language is like when he talks about it to gain more context clues.

    Don't Give Ground

I think it's a perfect analogy. I saw a different stream he was in which touched on this more. 4e was the game designers trying to fix all the flaws they saw in the game. Which is why it was so different. But people didn't want different. They wanted "what we have, but cleaner." Which is what...

    Don't Give Ground

I'm fine with the detente being "We keep the status quo of the 1.0a remaining intact, they make their walled garden around 6E," since that is what I assumed they were going to do already. The thing I'm pissed at is trying to shut down the 1.0a to funnel people into their walled garden, instead...

WotC's growing pattern of broken promises

1994, after they released a promo called Nalathni Dragon and a bunch of cards tied in to early Magic: The Gathering novels. Of course, the "no mechanically unique cards" promise was broken in 2018 with buy-a-box promos, so it wasn't even The Walking Dead that Broke that. They're released...

Why We Should Work With WotC

They were thinking "That's not money we're getting. We should get a piece. We should have more control." It's the same thinking that lead to Gleemax. They saw all these social networks rising, and through "We should have a piece of that." And found out the hard way that social media platforms...
