Worlds of Design: The Art of Improvisation in RPGs

Good article. In my almost 40 years as a GM I’ve used both the traditional and directed, as well as hybrid models mentioned in the article. My preference is traditional because I’m my experience it’s the most collaborative between the players and GM. My current 5E game has been running that way...

Edge Announced It Will Be Making Star Wars RPGs....

Some of the last books were compilations of stuff from the many published books. I hope we get a Force Powers book and Specialization Tree book.

    Lancer RPG Suspends Kickstarter Fulfillment

A friend and I ran a Kickstarter and we took almost two years to complete all the manuscripts before day one of the campaign. I recommend reading Sandbox #1 by Kevin Crawford before starting any KS project. It’s free at DTRPG: The Sandbox #1 - Sine Nomine Publishing | DriveThruRPG.com

    My First Game: Top Secret/SI

1983 Red Box, Mentzer/BECMI was my first RPG, but afterwards I was playing almost every game as they were published. I enjoy learning and playing new systems. Recently, I tried the S5S system through The Terminator RPG and it was awesome! Perfect, lethal fit for the IP and great hacking sub-system.

Worlds of Design: Tough Times at the Top

I’ve never experienced this problem in the almost 40 years of playing D&D. I don’t ‘balance’ combat encounters. I use variant rules to make combat ‘war’. With 5E, I’m using most of the gritty/lethal variants in the DMG. That has worked well at high level. With the conversion for Bloodstone Pass...

Making it All Up (With Help)

Thanks for the great article, those are some great options. I often run 0-prep games with the following: 1. Mythic GM Emulator Deck. Pricey, but worth every penny. For a more economic option just get the PDF/files at DriveThruRPG and load them into Roll20.net. 2. Game Master’s Apprentice...

D&D 5E (2014) WotC Is Designing Adventures With Shorter Content Chunks

Man, I’m old. In my youth we played for days, like literally 2 to 3 days with little or no sleep. We even did full weeks of 8-10 hour days to finish adventures like A Paladin in Hell, Return to the Tomb of Horrors, and Hellbound: The Blood War (that one was so awesome and epic).

The Hidden Costs of Game Mastering

Interesting article. GMing to me is energizing and cathartic. That’s probably why I’m almost always the GM. My only real stress associated with GMing is the prep work for some crunchy games. I can how stress during the game is possible, it’s just not the case for me.

Neat, it’s an acronym for MARVEL. :)

    D&D 5E (2014) Epic Monsters: Green Knight

Some Green Knight trivia, this tale may have come from Islamic sources: “Some scholars suggest that al-Khiḍr is also represented in the Arthurian tale Sir Gawain and the Green Knight as the Green Knight. In the story, the Green Knight tempts the faith of Sir Gawain three times. The character of...

Blog (A5E) Let’s Look At The Level Up Character Sheet

Like the Heritage and Culture fields. That split has been houseruled for decades, probably since the beginning of the hobby. My players often came up with fun backgrounds like a halfling raised by orcs. Nice to see it as a core rule in this set.

    In Praise of Dice

——— Well, I was playing a Pathfinder Society 1E game at GenCon a few years ago using my 5th level barbarian half-orc named Erakkis and there was an awkward situation that came up due to public GM rolls. So as background, I had done all I could to maximize Erakkis’ hit points. I was really proud...

    In Praise of Dice

In session 0, I always ask if the players prefer GM public rolls or private rolls (except when it doesn’t make sense of course like finding traps). Most of the players I’ve gamed with want public rolls. It does make it easier when their PC is killed, they asked for it. 🙂

The 10 Most Anticipated Tabletop RPGs of 2021

My advise is to kill off protagonists of the IP or pretend they never existed. You could also run a game in time and/or place in the IP universe that has not yet been fully explored. In one of my most recent Star Wars FFG games, the heroes of the Rebellion all died and the players were Jedi...

Blog (A5E) Look At Our 'Level Up' Cover Art!

Beautiful artwork, but not a fan of this as a cover. It just seems dull and bland when 5E is about fun and excitement. I’m sure a different scene could have been chosen to reflect that exploration can be fun and exciting. Maybe the same scene during a sandstorm? Just my two cents. I’m sure the...
