D&D General D&D Player's Handbook 2024: The Official Advance Review

A more apt analogy would be if the Tolkien estate releases a version of the Lord of the Rings Trilogy that prominently featured a new member of the Fellowship "Ringy McRingface". And Ringy McRingface has their own new set of adventures, maybe he's palling along with Gollum for awhile or he...

D&D General Could a real human survive your D&D adventures?

It means the argument is not supported by the game system. Edit: and no alternative argument is proffered

D&D General Could a real human survive your D&D adventures?

Maybe it's one maybe the other or maybe not. It's not stated anywhere. And moreover, Players' access to magic kinda contradicts all of them. A 6 INT wizard with an urchin background can cast spells with perfect execution 100% of the time and has the same number of spell slots as any other...

D&D General Could a real human survive your D&D adventures?

I think that last point is open to some level of debate. If it's true that everyone in setting can learn magic, you'd need some pretty gnarly reasoning to explain why everyone in setting doesn't know magic.

D&D General Could a real human survive your D&D adventures?

So, 1. I agree with the general sentiment here regarding survivability in the context of D&D hazards...but.. 2. I think there is a tendency to think of spell effects as manifesting with perfect uniformity throughout the geometrical area specified in the spell description, where I can see a...

D&D General Could a real human survive your D&D adventures?

Sure some of them survived. But there is a pretty significant difference in the threat soldiers face on average, the support they have in facing it, and the significance of the soldiers' individual contributions to those battles. For example, being an armored (typically noble) knight on...

D&D General Could a real human survive your D&D adventures?

So at level 1, a "medium" encounter might pit me and 3 friends against a brown bear, a creature that weighs between 180 and 1300 lbs, that can run 35mph. And under 5e expectations, me and my 3 friends might take this match 6-8 times in a day. Would we survive? Absolutely not. Each bear has a...

User Name and Avatars: Origin Stories

Wherever there is a tool with limitations, there is someone out there using that tool to make beautiful stuff. Humanity is glorious that way.

User Name and Avatars: Origin Stories

Back in the day there was a kid's toy called Magna Doodle, which let draw with some iron filings and a magnetic stylus. Its always struck me as kind of funny, harnessing one of the fundamental forces in nature to make fuzzy stick figure drawings, and then imagining a professional title for a...

    D&D 5E (2024) 2024 Player's Handbook reveal: "New Ranger"

Here's hoping you are right about the other legacy Ranger concentration spells.. Because, otherwise, it would be different than what has happened for the last 10 years..since one spell would be carrying along your class and subclass features, and the other would not. Demonstrably and...

    D&D 5E (2024) 2024 Player's Handbook reveal: "New Ranger"

I think of the Ranger as the environmental martial. Where Fighters excel in personal skill at arms and Paladins gain strength from the power of their convictions, Rangers know about the world/their enemies and how to use that knowledge in a fight. In terms of abilities, I'd expect: stuff to...

    D&D 5E (2024) 2024 Player's Handbook reveal: "New Ranger"

What is the logic here? That there is a variety in the types of spells they have received? Therefore the class lacks a specific identity? And it is impossible to construct such a class? That's a long way to go based on not much of anything.

    D&D 5E (2024) 2024 Player's Handbook reveal: "New Ranger"

The harsh truth is that it is difficult to construct a persuasive argument without providing evidence or logical reasoning for your assertions. And this post was composed solely of assertions without evidence or reasoning.

    D&D 5E (2024) 2024 Player's Handbook reveal: "New Ranger"

Yeah if force remains the universal resistance bypass, access to other elements isn't that impactful, the key part would be the change to the weapon damage rather than the nature of any bonus damage. The nice thing would be that the spell would be more of a tool in the kit of an experienced...

    D&D 5E (2024) 2024 Player's Handbook reveal: "New Ranger"

@Chaosmancer ..Changed my mind..I'll answer your question, but with the caveat that my version of the spell would just be for the purposes of liking the spell better rather than liking all the class ability dependencies tied to it. With that in mind, I think it'd be pretty simple, when you mark...

    D&D 5E (2024) 2024 Player's Handbook reveal: "New Ranger"

When you answer why you feel Hunter's Mark needs to be a spell, I'll answer what version of a Hunter's Mark spell I'd be satisfied with.. After all..I asked my question first. (And seems like a reasonable prerequisite question to answer to begin the discussion anyway).

    D&D 5E (2024) 2024 Player's Handbook reveal: "New Ranger"

You know, I was thinking about Hex as well and wondering why it doesn't bother me as much. I came up with a couple/few reasons.. 1. It may just be aesthetics, but the Hex spell is associated with a primarily spellcasting class, so having an additional magic tool doesn't feel quite as galling...

    D&D 5E (2024) 2024 Player's Handbook reveal: "New Ranger"

Sure. But that's also just the thing..why is this a spell? It doesn't benefit anyone else.. It replaces the things a normal hunter would do because they are a professional.. And the designers feel so strongly about it that they feel the need to break the spell slot economy for it
