I am curious about this perspective and what it is intended to mean. Like what is the judgement that we are trying to reach, who should be making it, and why? Because it seems to me that the differing parties here would disagree on possibly all of those parameters.

D&D 5E (2014) Casters should go back to being interruptable like they used to be.

I fail to see how you conclude that such drastic measures are required. In setting, it is rare to find that most of your time is spent in combat where such reactions would be worrying. And often enough, the party is either in control of or aware of when combat will take place. Like..it's not...

Yeah. I think Disaonant Whispers would have a pretty good case too since you'd have to full move away as your reaction. So getting back to the caster on your turn would be a challenge. I was trying to be a bit generous though in only counting the level 1 spells with 100% effectiveness no matter...

Charm Person causes the charmed condition, which prevents the target from attacking those who have charmed them. Command causes the target to spend their action on their turn following the command..which means they cannot attack. In addition, at first level you have Cause Fear, which causes...

Oh sure, this all falls into the "5e doesn't really tell us anything about how the mechanics of spellcasting function" bucket.

And then by 5th level a martial can make 2 attacks, while the caster can still cast 1 spell and fighters can make even more at later levels. So from 5th level on, spells are slower than attacks. Not sure why you're focusing on a level that people spend maybe one session at. I feel like it is...

D&D 5E (2014) Casters should go back to being interruptable like they used to be.

Without speaking to everything, I think there is a distinction to be made between giving every martial PC a "Mage Slayer" effect, and giving every melee NPC that effect. I don't think there is a need for these things to be correlated. This could easily be constricted to certain kinds of...

D&D 5E (2014) Casters should go back to being interruptable like they used to be.

Honestly, I think this would be waaaaaay more hostile to casters than providing some parameters for spell interruption. With spell interruption, the behavioral change would be in avoiding melee or whatever parameters would trigger that interruption..or make build choices that reduce the...

On the one hand I understand this concern. On the other, it seems to me that this seal was explicitly broken at release with the existence of Counterspell. There are also effects like Cutting Words on the Lore Bard and the Silvery Barb spell more recently which allow casters to impact the...

Certainly. From a math perspective at least, we're looking at 2-4 attacks made for an action vs. 1 spell cast as an action. It'd seem, at least to me, that action attacks are faster than action spells. But there's no real answer.

When you say, dancing around swinging their weapons, I'm assuming you're meaning stuff like looking for openings, considering angles, focusing on their opponent, and generally NOT trying to manifest supernatural forces using voice, motion, and delivery of exotic materials. I am not going to...

Are you trying to convince me we should be looking at game rules on the basis of what can happen at level 1? If so..umm..not gonna do that. I am ignoring ranged attacks. That is purposeful as I do not believe they need as much help as melee. Furthermore, since the premise of the topic involves...

D&D 5E (2014) Casters should go back to being interruptable like they used to be.

Agreed that a lot of the problem is ranged versus melee. And there likely is an issue with the balance of hp vs martial damage output (I'm not an expert on the MM, so this could just be perception, and tbh, maybe a bit afield of the topic) The oft-cited counterpoints to "range is too strong"...

D&D 5E (2014) Casters should go back to being interruptable like they used to be.

Sure I guess, though the range of martials' damage potential is pretty wide and casters have quite a few tools to make delivering that damage difficult or impossible. Again it's this weird (to me) asymmetry. Casters have a wide variety of tools to deal with martials, many which also deal...

D&D 5E (2014) Casters should go back to being interruptable like they used to be.

So to be clear, my primary focus has been trying to achieve, if not parity, at least some version of symmetry of "threats to character effectiveness". For me, these concerns are partly about mechanical balance and partly about the presentation of magic and hazards in D&D. I can't say that I am...

As it turns out, even if I accept your argument that 5% of casters are out wandering the battlefield in bathrobes, it still means that you'd see it frequently. Around as often as you might see a natural redhead, or a little more. And that robed wanderer is just out there amongst the grizzled...

So at the very top, we have been talking about whether the rules themselves are immersive. As such, the fact that the rules are the rules offers no support in this discussion one way or the other, which really carves out most how you responded. Let's see what's left.."intricate gestures vs...

And insofar as the effect is not magical? E.g. from inspiring leader, fighting spirit, recent UA patient defense, others?

I guess I'm curious then how you square things like "Second Wind" and "Survivor" within 5e. Because neither has anything to do with healing any injury.
