D&D 5E (2014) Thoughts on Divorcing D&D From [EDIT: Medievalishness], Mechanically Speaking.

As a fringe benefit, living underground especially deep underground would have some benefits in alleviating the differential effects of the stronger gravity on Earth.

D&D 5E (2024) Check Out The 2025 Monster Manual Alternate Cover!

It's fine art, but definitely a different vibe than the first 2 alts. Those were more storybook whimsy; this is more, I don't know..movie poster pulpy?

D&D 5E (2014) Thoughts on Divorcing D&D From [EDIT: Medievalishness], Mechanically Speaking.

Sure. I think he wore gear that makes sense for what he expected to encounter and the gameplan he had for the unexpected (i.e. run/hide). I think it's difficult to make a case in "typical" D&D for adventurers who both expect to delve into wholly uninhabited ruins and whose whole gameplan is to...

D&D 5E (2014) Thoughts on Divorcing D&D From [EDIT: Medievalishness], Mechanically Speaking.

It's mostly that the mechanics are untethered from what I think of as "typical" D&D creatures and combat. Nothing about the proposed changes appears to care about how D&D monsters work, or what kinds of circumstances occur in the "types of adventures D&D does well"

D&D 5E (2014) Thoughts on Divorcing D&D From [EDIT: Medievalishness], Mechanically Speaking.

The OP appeared to be a statement of a design goal (D&D adventures in a near modern setting) and your proposed changes to the mechanics (take away armor, add a bunch of guns, and rework classes) to achieve that design goal, with an invitation for others to provide their thoughts. My thoughts...

D&D 5E (2014) Thoughts on Divorcing D&D From [EDIT: Medievalishness], Mechanically Speaking.

I dunno, I feel like when he went to the exotic locations, he encountered exotic creatures. Whatever the you'd say was in the ark of the covenant, the ghost knight, some aliens at one point. He didn't fight them (that I recall), but there was usually something weird to find in the weird...

D&D 5E (2014) Thoughts on Divorcing D&D From [EDIT: Medievalishness], Mechanically Speaking.

It does seem that there is a bit of separation there. Ultimately, for me the question is "what kinds of threats should the PCs face, and under what circumstances?" From the answers to those questions, I'd expect the setting to have offensive and defensive responses to those threats and/or...

D&D 5E (2014) Thoughts on Divorcing D&D From [EDIT: Medievalishness], Mechanically Speaking.

That's a great question. I don't know that I have an answer really. Personally, I think it'd be kind of weird to venture into these explicitly exotic locations and fail to encounter exotic creatures, but that might just be me.

D&D 5E (2014) Thoughts on Divorcing D&D From [EDIT: Medievalishness], Mechanically Speaking.

My concern is with the interaction of the proposed mechanical aesthetics with the 'D&D' part of D&D adventures. I understand the ideation around the impact of firearms on the setting and mechanics, but D&D adventures often take place in dungeons, and frequently feature creatures like dragons...

D&D 5E (2014) Thoughts on Divorcing D&D From [EDIT: Medievalishness], Mechanically Speaking.

Yep. The following paragraphs are implementation ideas. You think reducing armor would provide mechanical reinforcement for a near-modern setting. You could have put any proposed mechanical change in those paragraphs. Rules for manned spaceflight and GPS. Elimination of HP. Mechanical...

Near as I could tell your design goal was this.. Reduction in the usability of armor looks like specific implementation to me.

D&D 5E (2014) Thoughts on Divorcing D&D From [EDIT: Medievalishness], Mechanically Speaking.

I'm not sure 'eliminating armor' was a design goal, so much as one particular response to a world where firearms are common. And, that response is predicated on the common firearms effectively ignoring armor. That response makes sense in a purely near-modern setting where the primary...

D&D 5E (2014) Thoughts on Divorcing D&D From [EDIT: Medievalishness], Mechanically Speaking.

This is certainly true. And I think an interesting point that hasn't yet been examined. What kinds of threats would D&D monsters represent in the more modern milieu you are looking for? Would post-medieval adventurers wear "dungeon armor" in the same way that divers wear shark armor...

If this is an Eberron adventure that you ran, what were the medievalist mechanical taxes you felt you were paying by using D&D? Or, what pulpy flair did you feel had inadequate mechanical support?

If anime is any guide, changing from a medieval setting needn't do much in terms of classes, or weapons, and guns needn't be the be all end all weapon of choice.. Watched a show recently that had all the gaslight, steam-powered locomotives, and horse-drawn carriages you could want, and they...

Based on personality..probably halfling. If I was choosing..maybe gnome. Like, aspirationally, I really appreciate industrious creativity..But realistically, I'm more of a connoisseur of snacking idly.
