To be honest this group is made out of players with different play styles. Several members are tactical oriented gamers. They play with little actual role playing at all and seem to view things almost from a video game perspective. They also tend towards power-gamer builds. Even joking"We head...

I at no time demand anyone act like anything. I simply think the player field should be equal. If you are going to empower some pc's and not other pc's those left out will over time cease to exist. But it this way. If in my games I house rules sneak attack out of the game and skills as well...

I have had pc's roll to resist a npc trying to talk them out of battle. I don't think it has even happened once battle has started.

and I notice you 100% avoided saying how you would rule it. My take on what you are saying is that you would let the combat pc slaughter the social one while not letting the social one use his abilities before the combat actually started. I guess that's awesome if your a combat oriented pc. In...

Nobody but you said combat was already taking place. No this is before combat. The combat oriented pc is stalking toward a social pc. THAT IS when it would be appropriate for the social pc to try and talk himself out of a jam.

So here is a question for you guys who disagree with my view. If you were DMing a game that allowed interparty conflict and one character built a pure combat oriented character and the other built a social character and the combat character got it into his head to attack the social one and the...

But you are cherry picking your questions. Persuasion isn't a 100% thing. You don't either fail and get turned into a slave or pass and it was nothing. In the case of the barbarian and his brother if the barbarian failed his check and was persuaded then maybe he sees the fellow taking about...

Well if your willing to say"Your sleight of hand roll doesn't mean you get to steal from your fellow party member but instead you perform a amazing display of sleight of hand" then yes i agree. However if you allow the sleight of hand but disallow the persuasion then I think that's a bad bad thing.

I agree with such rules. you treat the characters as equal and apply the rules equally. This is fine by my book. All I'm saying is if you allow one character to use his skills on another pc but disallow the other pc from using his skills on him in turn...that is messed up game play.

The group does (not often) enjoy inter-party conflict does happen. People role play their characters and sometimes those characters do come into conflict. It has even once or twice resulted in dead characters. This is over years of play. It frankly does not happen very often but it does happen...

or you know what? Maybe the Barbarain has good reasons to not help, or thinks he does. Maybe he does indeed still refuse to help them but instead waits nearby to sweep in and save the face man when the villagers betray him instead! The persuasion role doesn't mean he has to follow some plan...

So, you think listening to someone else and being convinced to do what they want instead of your original thought on the matter is out of character on any of your characters? See I just don't get it. This happens every single day in every single community in every single country in the entire...

But social skills are not spells or attacks. They do not have the force of such things and don't take away the players agency but help direct that agency. It's called role playing. Your character might be talked into things he wouldn't normally do but yeah that's what happens when dealing with...

Why? I mean you specifically mentioned social skills and not other skills. What separates Social skills from other skills?

So here we go again. In my game tonight a player with a 20 Cha and Expertise in Persuasion, who plays the face man of the party was role playing his character and trying to talk another pc into doing what he wanted(helping some villagers). The other pc was a really slow witted barbarian half...

D&D 5E (2014) What DM flaw has caused you to actually leave a game?

Currently I'm wrestling with playing in a game with a new DM who is having growing pain issues about playing favorites. He is tying to be a good DM but falling victim to showing favoritism in huge ways. His girlfriend and best friend ALWAYS gain powerful magic items and special abilities far...

    Dragon Heist TPK

They did take the back way in and did 88 points of damage before the first bad guy got to go for the round and then he was engaged with multiple enemies. However, Not till your post did I go look up Plan Shift and was surprised to see it has a casting time of one action. This is where I went...

    Dragon Heist TPK

The encounter is bad. It's not the first time D&D made a bad encounter and it isnt THAT big a deal. I was just shocked that the online reaction to it seems to be"Doesn't matter what the rules of the game are just do what you want" when it comes to saving the party. Also no the foe isn't...

    Dragon Heist TPK

Welcome to D&D 5E! The edition where they flattened the math so that lower level monsters and pc's could still threaten higher level targets. The bad guy just is not hard to beat. Low AC and although he has a lot of hit points verse 1st level characters, not enough to hang for more than one...
