    Adventures in Antarctica

In response to the requests in CarlZog's RI gameday thread, here is, at long last, a thread dedicated to my research in Antarctica (for which I'll be heading south again to continue from October 20 through January). A little background about me-- I am a third year PhD student at Brown...

Providence, Rhode Island Gameday -- Nov 11

So as to not derail Carl's planning thread with Antarctic-themed puns, I'll open up a thread in the OTF early next week (heading out of town tomorrow) for posting maps and pictures, and such.

Providence, Rhode Island Gameday -- Nov 11

Thanks for the invites, guys! I should be back in late January--sunburnt, wind-burnt, and maybe a little frost-nipped, but hopefully little worse for wear. I'll post from the sunny south when I get down to McMurdo, and again after I come back in from the field (I'll be about 3 months in a tent...

*sniff* I'll see if I can call in via sat-phone.

    damage reduction, useful?

From the "Every little bit helps" school of thought, I'm a fan of DR, even at low amounts. What makes many powerful monsters dangerous is not the power of their individual attacks, but the fact that they make multiple attacks (bite, claw, claw, wing, wing, tail...that kind of thing). A solid DR...

Why do Dwarves drink Whiskey or Ale?

Dwarven mead could be brewed from honey from two sources: 1) Honey is an ideal trade good (see also, medieval Russia--source of practically all the honey used by the vikings to make mead) as it keeps almost indefinitely in well-sealed jars, or 2) Honey harvested from cliff-roosting bees.

Ranged attacks while blinking -- no miss chance?

From the SRD: Regardless of the physics or the metaphysics of how long a launched arrow remains ethereal, attacks made while blinking still suffer miss chance.

KahunaCon '06 July 22nd and 23rd! slots still open! (greater Boston/Providence area)

Thanks for hosting, Kahuna-Krewe! I hope the blueberry bars met with approval on day 2. If folks have any feedback about the Shadowrun adventure or are looking to get a monthly/twice monthly Shadowrun group in the Boston/Providence area going, drop me a line at elysiumjoe at g mail.com. See...

KahunaCon '06 July 22nd and 23rd! slots still open! (greater Boston/Providence area)

Anyone coming up from/through Providence and looking to carpool? I ask because my wheels are of the two-wheeled motor-scooter variety--which means I will likely arrive very, very wet given the weather forecast. If you've got a spare seat, please drop an email to elysiumjoe at gmail.com...

    Just break the @#$!& thing!

I'd say the curse is on the PC, now that he's picked up the sword. Sundering the sword would just mean the character has to pull and wield a phantom sword in combat (sort of like a phantom limb for an amputee). Then again, I'm a RBDM and love curses....

PC survivability and starting at 1st level

Part of the survivability concern may stem from the DM side. Many DMs have a grand story put together for their PCs to be "run through." With constantly changing PCs, it is difficult to keep a campaign focused. It's the difference between wanting to write a novel and wanting to write a...

Mmmm...all the lunch options are quite exciting! Also, a reminder that I'd like a spot in the Saturday PM Feng Shui game (as posted a while back). I'll bring some local RI pastries for breakfast, or possibly cookies for the day.

    RL Dimensional Portal

Or just nifty ground-to-ground lightning. Still, makes me wonder who was Gate-ing in what in France. :) http://epod.usra.edu/ Right you are....now for a cup of coffee....

Can I Make My Games More Like Pirates of the Carribean?

Another approach is to re-tool "Action Points" into something more like the Feng Shui stunt bonus. Rather than using action points to improve a low roll before the DM announces player failure, require players to spend an action point, _as a bonus to ensure success_, when they try to do something...

    Gnome Fighter

I have found great success with a gnome Ftr/Paladin/Cavalier as a melee combatant. Combining a medium mount with the +1 to attack (small) and the serious of charge-improving feats produces a PC who can hit once per round with devastating effect. The +1 to AC (small) also helps in a "tank" role.

KahunaCon '06 July 22nd and 23rd! slots still open! (greater Boston/Providence area)

Just thought I'd post a synopsis of "A Marriage of Inconvenience" -- the SR adventure I'll be running: It's a nice day to start again...it's a nice day for a white wedding....2065-style. Your team of professional rogues have been contacted by the mysterious and fabulously wealthy Victor Drako...

Is a wand considered a weapon?

If a wand counts as a weapon, or a weapon-like object, can it be used by a hand which is attached to an arm which is sporting a light shield?

KahunaCon '06 July 22nd and 23rd! slots still open! (greater Boston/Providence area)

Given that I <3 Feng Shui, I'd be keen to call dibs on a slot in the Saturday PM FS game. Besides, I used to live in DC....a nice place to visit, but I wouldn't want to live there (again).

Hooray! I can confirm that I'll be around for at least the Saturday component of the game day, and would be happy to run my SR3 adventure. I'll post a more complete synopsis and characters as soon as I put together the runner team which I think will maximize the amount of mayhem.
