    D&D 5E (2014) Rolling for All Spells

Not really: "Similarly, because the words and gestures must be repeated exactly, spells cannot be cast while performing any other action (such as walking or fighting)." - B15. "If the caster loses initiative and takes damage or fails a saving throw, the spell is interrupted and lost." - X11...

The Medium is the Message: How Rules Reinforce Experience

player choices - conflict resolution system - consequences - changing player choices = game loop What kinds of choices do the players want to make? How do you want to resolve the PC's conflicts? (and what do PCs come in conflict with?) What are the consequences of the player's choices + the...

You're doing what? Surprising the DM

I think that Ron Edwards wrote an essay that talked about Setting-heavy situation. Heroquest (or Herowars?) was like this. Umm, but that was only for story now play. Yeah... I have more to say about other forms of play but that will have to wait.

    What Is This?

First thought: Belt of Assassins, lets you see in the dark when you're trying to kill someone. Now, let me roll on my tables... Belt of Stability created by dwarves to deal with sadness or depression from a lack of direction or meaning. Which makes me that it could let you see what some kind...

You're doing what? Surprising the DM

I like Ron Edward's idea: Setting + Characters = Situation. The way I like to think of it is that the Character's goals in this Setting create the conflict that drives the game. The setting gives meaning to the character's choices. I think a decent example of this sort of thing can be found...

D&D 5E (2014) D&DN going down the wrong path for everyone.

Yeah, I agree with you for the most part. My point is that you're talking about adventure design and not the mechanics. I can scale DCs to PC level in 3E and I can set DCs based on the game setting in 4E if I feel like it. For example: I was running Return to the Temple of Elemental Evil and...

D&D 5E (2014) D&DN going down the wrong path for everyone.

I don't think it's mechanically different; I think the difference is found in adventure design. It's easy enough to say, in 4E, "This is a simple wooden door with a normal lock, so it's a level 1-3 obstacle; DC 15". It's also easy enough to say, in 3E, "This adventure is made for 1st-level...

    D&D 3.x Converting 3.5 PC to AD&D

That's not what I'm thinking. I have converted the numbers over a couple of different ways, and each time I look at what I've got and wonder if I want to play that PC. The by-the-rules version doesn't fit with what my PC has done; the version that can cast 9th-level spells seems too powerful -...

    D&D 3.x Converting 3.5 PC to AD&D

Thanks for the replies! Yeah, at this level I don't think it's going to work out. With the BAB and caster level my 3.5 PC has (+17/17th wizard) I don't really see the point of porting over to AD&D. I should explore other options to make it easier on the DM.

    D&D 3.x Converting 3.5 PC to AD&D

I suggested this to my DM recently - I find that my 20th level 3.5E PC takes too much to play, and that we should just switch the campaign to AD&D. I still want to play that PC, but 3.5 takes too long in play and in prep at that level. Based on what we want to put into it to get what we want...

D&D 5E (2014) D&DN going down the wrong path for everyone.

One of the things I like about 4E is that the DM can say, "Yeah, no, I don't see it." Since powers aren't really reflective of what the PC is doing, I think the DM can step up and make sure that verisimilitude is respected. (I'm pretty sure that Balesir has the exact opposite attitude!) One...

    Castle Defense

I don't think that the catapults and ballistae would be loaded, but I think they'd be there, ready for use. Maybe covered with a tarp or something. I don't think the ropes lose tension in the unloaded/unready state.

You're doing what? Surprising the DM

I haven't been following the desert-city stuff in this thread, but I wonder: how much of the desert Hussar would be willing to skip/hand-wave if he was playing with a different system vs. 3E D&D. If I was playing Burning Wheel and we did some kind of magic to plane shift near the city but...

You're doing what? Surprising the DM

I think you need a backstory to give Beliefs meaning in the game world. I don't know if you must know what would determine any Belief to be true - I think you need some kind of idea, and I think you need to be flexible enough so that your ideas may change through the events in play. I played...

Help with interesting puzzles to vex my players

What about a gamble? You have some kind of strange machine that pumps out <<good stuff>>. But there's a good chance that it will pump out <<bad stuff>>, including monsters and PC-changing things (like "You can no longer lie" or "Your eyes turn black" or "You give off a horrid stench, which...

    D&D 4E best 4e adventures?

I liked Thunderspire Labyrinth - though a lot of what we did was the "side" adventures. It was pretty cool. Probably because the PCs were in hostile territory and couldn't easily regain healing surges/daily powers.

Is the Burning Wheel "how to play" advice useful for D&D?

I think I once used an Intimidation check to deal HP. One of the first 4E games I DMed, I think. I am going to check to see if I wrote it up. edit: I found something, not what I was expecting! I guess the NPC Irontooth made that check. I probably would have set the damage to low multiple...
