D&D 5E (2014) Why are potions of healing so expensive?

Brings back memories of Role Master and MERP. :)

D&D 5E (2014) Why are potions of healing so expensive?

Again, that's up to your table. At mine, a character knows when they are low on hp and by how much. For some it is a feeling of impending doom. Others feel like their battery is running out. My last dwarven cleric of death was able to feel his proximity to the boundary between the living and the...

D&D 5E (2014) Why are potions of healing so expensive?

In D&D there are many senses that we do not have. How it expresses itself regarding HP is entirely up to you and your table.

D&D General Leaning into the tropes

D&D-isms are something that is crutial for the players to understand. Mostly so that they can appreciate the parts of a game that deviate from it.

D&D 5E (2014) Why are potions of healing so expensive?

It's not meta if it is something a character can determine in game. A fighter can have no injuries and be low on hp. The fighter knows of their depleted condition because that is how it works in the world. It's only metagaming if it is something the character could not know in-world.

D&D General Kobayashi Maru: Should the fate of the character always be in the player's hands? POLL

I'm not sure I can think of a reasonable situation where players have no choice or agency. They alway have the option of saying "no" to the DM.

D&D 5E (2014) Why are potions of healing so expensive?

All the Poisoned condition means is that you have disadvantage on attack rolls and ability checks. You can gain this condition in many ways, not all of them involve poison.

    What Are You Bad At?

We do 3d6, in order, for our character gen. There are very few characters with more than one stat above a 15. Most PCs hover around 10 for nearly every stat. We did have an 18 once (Charisma) but that character died on their first dungeon delve. :devilish:

D&D 5E (2014) Why are potions of healing so expensive?

Yep. These are the rules. In fact, "100% capable until 0 hp" has been the status quo for the last 40+ years. There used to be some fun special cases, though. Like weapons of sharpness removing limbs or vorpal weapons removing heads. :)

    What Are You Bad At?

Sometimes, letting other characters shine IS contributing to the party. ("I can't do this. But I know you can. So go save the world.") Combat is not the only thing (or even the most important thing) in the game. :)

D&D 5E (2014) Why are potions of healing so expensive?

If you were open up to attack more, you'd have a worse AC or give opponents advantage (Barbarians, anyone?). You can, of course, house rule hp/AC/etc. to be anything you want. Your table, your rules. :)

D&D General What DM-skills are you bad at?

I am terrible at accents. I do them as much as possible. :D

    What Are You Bad At?

One of the prominent PCs in the game I am currently running has no score higher than an 8 and a CON of 4. Stats are only a small part of the story. :)

D&D 5E (2014) Why are potions of healing so expensive?

Since a character is perfectly 100% functional all the way down to 1 hp, it's hard to argue that they have broken arms or legs. "Sure I can wield this 2-handed sword with just as much efficacy as ever - but trust me...my arm is broken."

    D&D 5E (2014) Revisiting RAW Darkness Spell

I've made out a silhouette against a small fire that was a quarter mile away. I don't think you need to have light source radii touching to make out an orc between you and a torch in a hall.

    What Are You Bad At?

Starting off with character flaws that you work on thoughout a campaign gives so much more depth to a PC than "less powerful version of a thing to more powerful version of a thing".

D&D 5E (2014) Why are potions of healing so expensive?

Aren't 1/2 HP just representative of "scratches and bruises" in the rules? Also, are there even rules for breaking a bone?

    D&D 5E (2014) When Failure Isn't an Option in 5e

I'm not sure what "should always be able to move forward" is supposed to mean. The characters should always be able to "move" (so long as they are alive). But the direction is entirely up to the circumstances and their decisions. Failures, even hard failures, are critical to the appreciation...

    D&D General On Grognardism...

This is a feature and not a bug. Conflict is not a negative thing in and of itself. It is very helpful when handled responsibly. Hashing out the kind of game everyone wants to play is exactly what you should do before committing to a campaign. If the table has reasonable adults then you can...

D&D 5E (2014) Why are potions of healing so expensive?

Only if silver is as rare in the fictional world as it is in ours. The typical dragon horde depicted in D&D art (a massive pile a dragon can sleep on) is more gold than had been mined in our world's history up to the 20th century. Clearly there's something going on with the rarity of precious...
