D&D General Rogue as Assassin and Rogue as Jack

agreed, being a skillmonkey or the like really isn't a viable standalone class concept in 5e

D&D General [rant]The conservatism of D&D fans is exhausting.

of course they are completely able to judge when the right time for them to enter should be, however this still gives them absolutely zero influence over when anyone else, especially their opponents, will enter the situation. however the skill isn't burglary, it's lockpicking(or specifically to...

nah, it was healing elixir i was thinking of, i looked it up afterwards

okay but this is part of the core problem you're missing, yes, the dice roll to unlock the door is something that should be influenced by the character's ability rating, however that same dice roll influenced by their stats/skills is also being used to determine their luck in the situation which...

the problem was never with when the decision was being made, the problem was always with the state of the world changing between the functionally unrelated roll succeeding or failing. is there a cook behind the door? we can't know until we make this causally unrelated lockpicking check!

What’s that one spell that lets you create a potion using a spell slot? Healing elixir? That seems appropriate

D&D 5E (2024) YART: Adding Ranger Spell Options to Class Features.

looking at the list of basic familiars in 5.14 i feel most of them do fit the ranger being ordinary animals bat, cat, crab, frog(toad), hawk, lizard, octopus, owl, poisonous snake, fish(quipper), rat, raven, sea horse, spider and weasel. the only ones i'd say don't feel like they fit there are...

blur would be a very good defensive option to give them, especially once the 'concentration can't be broken from damage' kicks in

find steed/greater steed perhaps? you couldn't cast it in battle but i think it's apt. it's also a crime ranger doesn't get find familiar.

D&D 5E (2024) Could the DnDNext Sorcerer be revived as its own class?

i mean it's just as easy to ask 'what's a wizard at this point but a sorcerer without a bloodline or metamagic in exchange for a spellbook.' the sorcerer 'magical bloodline' narrative also encompasses the 'spark of magic' aspect of the wizard much better than the reverse, so if you made a...

D&D 5E (2014) Convince me that the Ranger is a necessary Class.

i was referring to things that could be implemented in the baseclass rather than as part of a list of optional talents

D&D 5E (2014) Convince me that the Ranger is a necessary Class.

the specifics can't be agreed upon but there's still some solid broad strokes there that are agreed upon: nature based, martial inclined, higher skill individual, having a specialist area of knowledge be that in a type of creature or environment.

D&D 5E (2014) Convince me that the Ranger is a necessary Class.

while i do think it's a good idea for the ranger to be built with an invocations/infusions equivalent to compensate for the conceptual multidirectionalism i do think you've gone way too hard going all in into the 'build your own' aspect of it and as Minigiant mentioned feat chains, that outline...

it's actually like saying if you miss your attack and fail to kill them then the enemy is still going to be an obstacle on your next turn.

yes, i suppose you could just ignore the history of the term and take it on pure face value.

D&D General [rant]The conservatism of D&D fans is exhausting.

i mean, 'that's what my character would do' is generally seen as a very distinct thing from playing the character true, the line of 'TWMCWD' is a stereotypical one used as a deflection and defence for just being a massive disruptive ass in play and 'justifying' it on their character's personality.

D&D 5E (2024) Could the DnDNext Sorcerer be revived as its own class?

that's the thing though, the swordmage is not just a 'person who hits and magics', they're a person for whom hitting and casting is one and the same, none of the 5e classes properly do this, the combat and magic mechanics are so separate from each other in all of the attempts in 5e that you...

D&D 5E (2014) Convince me that the Ranger is a necessary Class.

just because the 5e paladin vaguely lines up with aragorn's abilities doesn't mean that aragorn isn't also one of the characters who primarily shaped the archetype. and the fact aragorn barely has magic is basically meaningless given how low magic middle earth is, the two primary users of magic...

D&D 5E (2014) Convince me that the Ranger is a necessary Class.

i admit i'll never really understand the people who say the ranger needs to be magicless, part of the fundamental archetype of the ranger to me is that of the survivalist, and that core survivalist mindset is never ignore/forget something that could be useful, in DnD magic is one hell of a...
