D&D General [rant]The conservatism of D&D fans is exhausting.

i think that if you agree to sit down to play a game, roleplaying, simulationist or narrative, if part of the core character builder is a stat that is designed to directly model some attribute then you should be using that stat and it's mechanics to determine how your character acts when called...

i don't mean this at all as a personal jab but i think lots of people would like to believe they could control their emotions, however i think it's far too common that they just don't end up being able to do that, heated tempers can prevail far too often in arguments and we end up saying and...

the world is never created in consideration and direct response to the PC's goals, desires or identity, if the PCs travel to an area of the world that the GM has only vaguely defined then yes, technically, the world is defined in response to the players going there, but the contents of what is...

It's the GMs world, You're getting the chance for your character to impact it with their actions.

if you think about your own metaphor i think it becomes abundantly clear the answer is absolutely 'yes, they can', but the GM doesn't create 'positions on the map' because that would imply you can only go to those locations, you can go literally anywhere on the map should you choose to, throw a...

    D&D 5E (2024) Martial/Caster fix.

i think most people who suggest it aren't considering it so much through the angle of a damage ramp but as a way to increase rogue's consistency of getting their SA damage in the first place, as with only one attack it makes them a bit of an all of nothing gamble, i know light weapons exist but...

D&D 5E (2024) Creative uses of Thaumaturgy, Druidcraft and Elementalism?

elementalism would be especially worthwhile for creating bonus action cover or 'steps' for manoeuvrability with blocks of earth or ice, but as a full action it really just doesn't feel like it's worth spending the action.

    D&D 5E (2024) Martial/Caster fix.

i wouldn't be entirely opposed to the concept of a generic basic adventurer class but i did think the earlier question was 'how would you make a simple caster' in all honesty if we did have separate true 'simple classes' i think i'd try to rework the sidekick classes somehow for those ends.

@Hussar i might compare 'living world' vaguely to a game like CIV, you're running around passing turns with your units(party) but meanwhile the rest of the world is still taking their turns too, typically unconcerned with what your party is doing, encountering and dealing with all their own...

    D&D 5E (2024) Martial/Caster fix.

something like that probably, i mean, that's most of what the champion is right? i'd imagine giving them an improved unarmoured defence/mage armour ability for better AC, +casting mod on cantrip and spell damage, CON save proficiency and then their spell point conversion just ratios out on...

    D&D 5E (2024) Martial/Caster fix.

interesting, though if you were going for a 'truly simple' champion-equivalent caster you probably wouldn't want to include those kinds of augment abilities in their design. known caster, short spell list (supplemented by subclass expanded spell lists), spell point casting, a handful of passive...

    D&D 5E (2024) Martial/Caster fix.

i'd say for 5e DnD you'd probably want a caster with a short focused list of always known spells which runs on a (revised) spell points system, i think managing your different numbers of differently leveled spell slots is a more complicated method than 'i want to cast a 4th level spell, 4th...

    D&D 5E (2024) Martial/Caster fix.

because BMX Bandit and Angel Summoner syndrome, even when the players are on the same team and working towards the same goals they typically desire to feel like they're equally worthwhile and contributing as much as their teammates. your martial having less options isn't an issue if it's a...

    D&D 5E (2024) Martial/Caster fix.

the issue as i see it is that it creates an inequality in the viability of my options based primarily on the flavour/archetype of the character i want to play, why should i be penalized for wanting to play a badass claymore swinging knight or a skilled and sneaky dagger throwing rogue rather...

    D&D 5E (2024) Martial/Caster fix.

for me what defines a caster is the amount in which their spells are incorporated into the design and use of their class, to me rangers and paladin are casters because their class is designed to take advantage of their spells and slots as part of their resources, an eldritch knight or arcane...

    D&D 5E (2024) Martial/Caster fix.

no, high elf champion got a pass because none of it's spellcasting came from it's class or subclass, the champion subclass is a pure martial subclass, although the character gains some ability to cast from it's species that doesn't influence the fundamental majority design of the character...

'GMs are out to get me and my agency' is simpler than 'GMs want to simulate a world that functions realistically to them' to you?

    D&D 5E (2024) Martial/Caster fix.

i would call rangers, paladins and artificers half-casters rather than martials, because that's what they are. arcane tricksters and eldritch knights and the like are martials, but they're explicitly martials that dip into magic, the concept of the martial that supplements their physical...
