At-will class powers ruining my archetypes

Yes, this is pretty much how it's suppose to work. The 4e paradigm for caster is that "casters should never run out of magical effects, even though the one that don't run out are just minor effects", thus the magic missiles that you can shoot all day. Sadrik's PoV is that all magical effects...

    How do you distribute treasure?

The expectation for magical loot or wealth by levels came about due to the attempt to provide a scale for measurement of monster power vs PC power so that the DM will know what monsters can challenge PCs of a certain level. In older editions, there was little to no such system. DMs guessed or...

[4E] Knowledge checks and monster powers

I usually does this, but sometimes I tell the PCs about scary powers that won't come up often or only activated on someone dying, like wraith's ability to make more of itself by killing enemies. It scares the players without the DM having to kill a PC to show the power to them. Of course, if...

Well technically, white has a minor advantage since it moves first....:p

At-will class powers ruining my archetypes

This arguement has been going on for ten pages, isn't it time for some empirical data? Go ahead Sadrik, remove at-wills from your game and post your game results. It's obvious that no one is gonna be convinced by what the other side is saying. It's time for some actual playtesting and results.

Is 4e bringing new players to the game?

I'd think having a big difference between the sale of PHB vs other supplements are not unexpected. Probably everyone in a gaming group would want their own PHB, but they'll share player supplements like martial power so each group would probably just have one or two copies of those, and finally...

    Toughest critter in 4e

Regen can be shut off temporarily with radiant damage. I would be wary of putting a wraith against a party that doesn't have a str-pal or laser cleric or a starlock.

Forked Thread: Games that are good for lone wolves (Was 4E Consequences: )

But isn't that just running four solo games at the same time? What's the point of getting everybody together to play if the players don't interact during the game? I'm not dismissing your idea outright, but I do have my doubts about it. Even if you're doing just a few rounds per player, that...

At-will class powers ruining my archetypes

I think there might be a paradigm problem here. In 4e, at-wills are that character's basic attacks. They're the bread and butter of that particular class. They're not suppose to be flashy or very awesome, you have encounters and dailies for that, those are the special powers, not at-wills...

Who heals in a Druidic society?

Exactly. In D&D terms, the real world has no "healers". The best thing we have are people with really high ranks in the heal skill. Civilizations seems to have managed.

    Your money or your life?

A reason PCs would rather die than lose their stuff is that players don't see their stuff as "stuff". Once something goes on their character sheet, it's part of their character. A dragon asking PCs to surrender their stuff to him and then he'll let them live is no different from a vampire asking...

    Roles - do they work?

Which is why I posed the question of what if WotC didn't call those classes by their "classic" names. What if the classes are nothing more than names? Would it be so very different? Because it is very obvious that the expected flow of character generation in 4e is concept-> combat role-> class...

    Roles - do they work?

Would've it been better if WotC just called the classes martial defender, martial striker 1, martial striker 2, etc. instead of calling them fighter, rogue, ranger? Coz, really, that's all those classes mean in 4e. Personally, I subscribe to the idea that classes are nothing more than...

The Problem of Evil [Forked From Ampersand: Wizards & Worlds]

PCs in my game are the same. We have too little time to play to debate the nature of evil. If there are things standing in the way of loot and plot, those things are ENEMIES, no one cares if they're orcs, humans, elves, etc.

World of Warcraft taught me how to DM again.

I think one factor that hasn't been discussed yet is the length and frequency of your gaming sessions. Our group is running RHoD, but we only meet once every other week for about 3 hours each time. It gets difficult to keep track of what the overarching plot is when we're doing it in such tiny...

    The Changing Game

So...D&D should incorporate Birthright into its core rules? I'm not sure that using the rules to force a genre shift in mid D&D levels is such a good idea. The game as it stands doesn't prevent you from shifting to a more political/fiefdom building focused game in your group, but if the rules...

Planescape, 4e, and the problem of worlds without history

The great wheel cosmology is reliant on the two axis alignment system. It makes the implicit assumption that alignment is a real cosmic force in the multiverse and takes a hand in shaping the planes. The nature and position of the each of the planes on the wheel are all informed by its...
