[Whedeon-philes] What if Joss ran a D&D game?

Vecna would have a tragic back story while his cult would be made up of people from all walks of life held together by a familial-like bond. Among them will be a messed up teenage girl more powerful than Vecna.

But it would sell extremely well when packaged as a module.

    Good/Evil vs. Law/Chaos

Just to muddle it further. People often just define "good" as "what I do", while "evil" is "what people I hate do", even if, objectively, it's the same action.

Magic deadly to the caster and allies

I was gonna write the same thing, but you put it better. Just because characters are easy to makes, doesn't mean you don't have attachment to it. That's a strawman. However, if characters are easy and quick to make, the player can get back into the game sooner if his old one died in a freak...

Hit Points & Healing Surges Finally Explained!

Hp in D&D has never modelled long term injury well. If you're hurt enough that you can't just ignore it the next day, you're probably not gonna be able to fight at full effectiveness, which is not something that has ever been accounted for by the hp model. As long as you have 1 hp left, you're...

Hit Points & Healing Surges Finally Explained!

I look at hp and healing surges in reverse. Your healing surges are your "real" hp. It's how much strain you can take for the entire day, with some resting and breaks during the day. Your hp value is the amount of punishment you can take in a short period of time. The following is how I...

Our world through the eyes of a D&D inhabitant

What do you mean my level doesn't help me survive! I don't get any extra hp when I level? So my lv 20th character can be killed by a lv 1 noob with a knife. This game is completely unbalanced. Who designed this crap!

    What's Wrong with the Railroad?

I think adventure path type railroads where your PCs have an impact on the adventure can be actually pretty good (ie. the PCs collects the MacGuffins, go attack BBEG's lair and save the kingdom) if your players agree to play that type of game. But the really bad railroad is when the PCs gets...

6 months later: impressions of 4e

Well, just off the top of my head, there's the mish-mash creatures (ie. chimera, pegesus, griffin etc.). Horses doesn't just start flying if you stick a pair of wings on them. Related to that are things that are just too big to fly. Giant creatures that look like scaled versions of earth...

6 months later: impressions of 4e

Too late. I had that book for years. I just try not to think about the stupid stuff too much. I actually like the fact that the 4e MM has very little ecological fluff in it since none of the stuff they usually write makes any sense anyways and I just ignore the stuff they come up with when I DM.

6 months later: impressions of 4e

Wow, so many science professionals here. I study evolutionary ecology and when I read through the monster manual and see some of the monsters or the ecological fluff that the writers come up with, I often feel an urge to scream "biology doesn't work that way!" I find it best to just leave my...

    The Tomb of Myth

On a deeper level, regarding Joseph Campbell and his hero stuff. A lot of heroic myths are allegories about growing up and taking your place in the world. Heroes go on long journeys to prove themselves able to overcome their father's legacy and succeed his mantle. But they're personal stories...

    The Tomb of Myth

See, this is where I think you're putting on rose-tinged glasses. Most mythic heroes don't do their legendary stuff because of some noble, cosmic PURPOSE. They go kill monsters to prove themselves worth of inheriting a kingdom, go on fetch quests to impress some hot chick or her father, or...

    Your Real Self? Or Not?

I play who I think I might want to be if I was facing those fantastic game situations and not constraint by modern social expectations and norms. I don't really think I can play someone completely different from myself, but I can play someone with characteristics drawn from aspects of myself...

    Please cure my 4e illiteracy

Page 42 is the page in the DMG that gives guidelines and tables of expected DC and damages based on PC level for adjudicating PC actions not covered by rules and powers.

What formed your idea of what D&D is to you?

I started playing in highschool with AD&D 2nd ed. 2nd ed has all sorts of optional rules even just in the core three so we were always fiddling around with the game mechanics and seeing what works and what doesn't. Our group was mostly made up of recent immigrant from Hong Kong (weird eh?) so...

    The Tomb of Myth

This thread seems like wearing rose-tinged glasses reminiscing about the good old days to me. There's nothing stopping your DM from drawing from mythic traditions and putting stuff into his game setting. But a game system that wants to be able to cater to multiple settings has to incorporate...

Some people are so traumatized by 4e that they lost a month from their minds. :D

So we might mess up, so what? Forked Thread: Fudging the Numbers in 3ed

I guess we'll just have to disagree then. 4e mechanics aren't tied down to their flavour text, so its easier to reskin that mechanic/monster/power/class to fit other fluff. What it loses in depth and simulationism, it gains in versatility.

    Sign of Things to Come?

If you really think about it, eating food to regain hp is not that much different from gaining hp from drinking a potion or poking yourself with a wand.
