So we might mess up, so what? Forked Thread: Fudging the Numbers in 3ed

Not nintendo, no. But I've seen people go away from the table and sit on the couch and surf internet on their blackberry. And these weren't teenager, they're professionals in their late twenties, early thirties. And we were playing 4e with its shorter rounds and saving throw mechanics. If...

    Misconceptions about 3.5...Answers

Or most likely we would lose, if they ever decide to make a movie out of it. Lose very, very horrificly.

So we might mess up, so what? Forked Thread: Fudging the Numbers in 3ed

Yes, webs and entangles seems to be a special case in 3e. But the durations of a lot of other spells aren't. Your con doesn't reduce the duration of nauseate from stinking cloud, your wis doesn't reduce the duration of charm/dominate person. For a lot of spells, once it gets pass your save...

No other Ranged Weapon Class, or How I loathe the ranger

I think in martial powers, there are a few warlord power which requires heavy thrown weapons. They're pretty good powers too.

So we might mess up, so what? Forked Thread: Fudging the Numbers in 3ed

The save mechanic is a duration mechanic in 4e, it has nothing to do with how strong or fast you are. That is dealt with by your defense. In previous editions, you'd roll 1d4+1 round for duration, does someone with high stats get to reduce their durations?

So we might mess up, so what? Forked Thread: Fudging the Numbers in 3ed

Fixing stuff on the fly requires you to at least know where the problem is. The DM makes a monster too hard and the players are complaining, is it because its hp is too high? its AC? its attack? its damage? its special abilities too powerful or recharge too often? or perhaps the terrain favours...

Fun to Play, Boring to Read; Forked Thread: The Nature of Change

Heck, 1e and 2nd ed books were a lot more fun to read than 3.x books. I used to borrow D&D books from the library just to read them. The rules were a mess, but the books were good reading.

How did you avoid spamming attacks in 3e combat?

Well, one of the things about 3.x is that the offensive abilities of characters and monsters are favoured over their defensive capabilities. The leads to glass cannons and the problem that if the players don't essentially end combat by turn 4 or 5 (they may have to take a few more rounds just...

Fun to Play, Boring to Read; Forked Thread: The Nature of Change

I think WotC is going with two lines of books in their publications. There's the crunch heavy books geared primarily for players (the Powers, Adventurer Vault, PHBIIs etc.). Players who buy the books mainly want more options for their character, whether it's new powers, items, PP etc. Fluff is...

    Misconceptions about 3.5...Answers

Person 1: "Fighters, monks and paladins are weak and have little in-game versatility." Person 2: "You can use the ToB and rename the warblade, the swordsage, and crusader into fighter, monk and paladin. Therefore, the idea that fighters, monks and paladins are weak is a misconception." I'm...

Fudging the Numbers in 3ed - Forked from: Why do you keep playing 4e?

I find this to be my problem with monster modification/creation in 3.5 (let's not use the word fudging, it carries a connotation of emergency DM fiat at the gaming table). I don't have a good idea what stats or powers a CR X monster should have. The monster building process as given in the MM...

    Misconceptions about 3.5...Answers

I think this is a classic case of the Oberoni Fallacy. Just because you can modify the rules to make the problem go away, it doesn't mean the original rules aren't a problem.

    Kobolds as PCs...Why?!

I played a dragonwrought kobold dragonfire adapt in a game once. It was the closest thing I've ever come to playing a dragon.

First Time DM'ing 3.5 Sorcerer... Should I Be Worried?

Actually, the OP mentioned that the sorc player is a new player so you might want to give him some advice on spell selection and/or be a bit more lenient in letting him switch his spells. A newbie who don't know much about the spell list can make mistakes and pick a bunch of spells that just...

The Heroic Impulse: Where Have All the Heroes Gone?

We still on this topic? You're a hero if you succeed despite danger and difficult odds, whether because of your own skills, powers, preperation and/or planning. If you fail, you're an idiot. If you (an unarmed, untrained civilian) tried to attack some armed people robbing a bank in real...

The Heroic Impulse: Where Have All the Heroes Gone?

So, I would argue that the XP and loot structure of D&D cater to those ancient hero archetype more than the modern version. So it's easier just to make an "awesome" hero than a "paragon of virtue" hero, but it's not impossible.

The Heroic Impulse: Where Have All the Heroes Gone?

I think we're confusing two different definition of hero here. There's the ancient definition where hero simply means superhuman. If you've read some ancient myths, a lot of "heroes" aren't very "heroic" in the modern sense. They don't have to be moral, or brave, or self-sacrificing. They're...

Where Has All the Magic Gone?

May I suggest that what people calls "magic" is simply stuff that they can't explain. To ancient people, lightning is magic and a power wield by the gods because they can't understand its cause. Curses were thought to work because people didn't understand germ theory and how people got sick...

Where Has All the Magic Gone?

To put it another way: "There is no magic." A magic user in an RPG world simply uses the natural laws of his own RPG world to produce his effects. It seems magical and mysterious to us because the laws of our world do not allow such effects. To the inhabitants of the RPG world (and certainly...

Where Has All the Magic Gone?

In fiction, something that has a million to one chance of success will always succeed. This is because everything is determined by the writer. Hot blood and courage can alter the laws of physics and the heroes can win even with 0% chance of success. Trying to apply this to real life games where...
