How ENWorld has tainted my love of D&D

Some people likes a car for the way it looks and the way it speed down the street when they step on the gas. Others enjoy watching the engine work, the intricate dance of the valves and the way it converts chemical energy into motion. Does knowing how an internal combustion works necessarily...

    Alternity 2e Wish List

The use of the O/G/A system is precisely why Alternity uses a roll under system. Sure, mathematically, the chance of rolling 4 or less is the same as rolling 17 or higher, but there is an additional calculation step involved in using a roll higher system. Say you have a skill score of 16, to...

Finding Traps Stinks - Or Am I Doing It Wrong?

I think the 4e paradigm for traps has shifted away from being stuff that a rogue finds and disarms and then the party goes on its merry way to traps being an integral part of the terrain during an encounter. Used as such, traps are suppose to not be too difficult to spot. The challenge comes...

    D&D 4E 4e and reality

My 2 cp regarding common sense as the arbiter of rules. Common sense is highly dependent on a person's knowledge and experience. What is common sense to someone would be non-sense to somebody else. For example, let's take overland travel in a D&D-esque game. The distance travelled in a day is...

    Monk Unarmed Strike

Yeah, I think this is the big oversight right now. If you're an unarmed monk, you have to use your ki focus as the implement coz your fists are unenchantable. This makes feats and abilities that boosts your fists useless for all intents and purposes. If your DM uses the inherent bonus...

    Monk Unarmed Strike

So a mountain devotee monk can get his +2 damage if he uses his unarmed strike for his powers but then get no other bonuses? Any idea why WotC went with such a convoluted system for the monk? Why not just make the monk a regular [W] class and have their fists be either enchantable weapons or...

    Monk Unarmed Strike

The bonus to unarmed strike doesn't explicitly mention damage rolls. The comparison I'm think of is a sorc still gets his weapon focus (dagger) damage when he uses his dagger as an implement. This is of course assuming a monk can use his unarmed strike as an implement, which is debatable...

So, Dark Sun: It's officially out. What do you think of it?

I'd second MrMyth's suggestion that WotC commission the art before they finalized the mechanic. It happens quite frequently with their M:tG products and I think they have a whole collection of unused Magic art that just wasn't right for a card's final mechanic.

D&D 4E Is It Time to Look at 4E Again?

Old monsters are not updated, but you can get the new "expected damage by monster level" chart in either the aug or jul (I forgot which) update available on the WotC website. A simple way I use, which seems to work reasonably well, is to either add another damage dice or double the static damage...

D&D 4E Tweaking a couple of things my group doesn't like about 4E

The problem I sort of had with restricting extended rest for my group is that our group meets for about 3-4 hours every 2 weeks (at best). People either forgets that they have/haven't used, or it would be a month or more in real time before they could refresh dailies etc. A few times I just...

    3.5 better for world building?

I think this is where the disconnect is for me. I see the rules in any books as being, at best, a model useful for conflict resolution or situations involving the PCs. They do not represent physical realities upon which I do my world building. When the model conflicts with what I imagine my...

    3.5 better for world building?

I'm in total agreement here. The best book I've ever read on world building was the 2nd edition Campaign Sourcebook and Catacomb Guide and it has no charts, no tables, no long lists of rules and is completely edition independent.

    Birthright??

Our group is planning a 4e game using the birthright setting. I'm not sure how the DM is going to deal with the birthright-specific rules and the ruling your own country thing, but after reading the 2e stuff, I'm not too optimistic about the whole adaptation. It seems rather complicated and...

D&D 3.x Thinking about converting some 3.5 modules to 4e - any pointers?

Don't try to convert the monsters literally. Just keep the storylines and pick new monster or reskin monsters of the appropriate level for your encounters. This may seems like a big job, but making encounters is super easy in 4e. Way easier than trying to convert everything piece by piece.
