Nominate your MOST ANTICIPATED RPG of 2024

Let's just get it over with. Pendragon 6e is probably also going to be the best TTRPG released in 2025. Anyway, my more serious answer since I'm not expecting 6e this year is Ronin from Slightly Reckless Games.

Which RPGs did you play in 2023?

Not sure I can remember all the games where I've tried playing out a few encountersby myself or with one player to see how the rules work in practice, so I won't list those. However I can list the campaigns and one-shot games. Campaigns: Star Trek Adventures (complete), Runequest (1 complete, 1...

    D&D General Destroying Rome?

432BC is just in time for the start of the Peloponnesian War, which might make uniting Greece quite hard. The Romans are at war (as always) against some of the Etruscans. Bear in mind they aren't the only people in the west who the Greeks might be fighting against - Carthage, the Etruscan...

    D&D 5E (2014) The Fighter/Martial Problem (In Depth Ponderings)

Because the designers are making rules that support what they think players/GMs are going to do. They'll make assumptions about the way the game should go and write rules that make sense if it goes that way. And then when it doesn't play that way in most groups, the end result is constant...

D&D General What does the mundane high level fighter look like? [+]

So what? That is intended to sound flippant, but if the Fighter is "The best at Combat (TM)" then why would other classes get equally or more effective combat abilities. Particularly spellcasters, who get a whole array of other things they're good at which the Fighter can't do at all.

D&D General What does the mundane high level fighter look like? [+]

Would you take 56m in 10 seconds while fending off two attempted tackles and dodging three others as reasonable? That's beyond what a D&D Fighter could do, but recorded on camera. What the 5e fighter resembles is a platonic ideal of what a D&D Fighter should be like in the minds of people who...

D&D General What does the mundane high level fighter look like? [+]

It's not exactly a "Wounds" system, but BECMI weapon Mastery rules allow weapon users to deliver quite a variety of SFX to people they target. Something like the Slow effect could easily be described as inflicting an injury to limbs/legs or arms.

D&D General What does the mundane high level fighter look like? [+]

In the specific example of Beowulf, a magic weapon is useful to him in one out of three of his main fights. He uses bare hands against Grendel and a knife against the dragon - and it's fair to note that Wiglaf's sword isn't apparently anything special. Might need a better example of a hero...

D&D General What does the mundane high level fighter look like? [+]

The high-level Fighter's problem is not dealing out lots of damage. It's being able to survive, particularly against the massive array of enemies with SFX to attack them with. It's all the other stuff that they simply have no reliable way to do that doesn't relate to combat. And choices with...

What if the martial/caster divide were optional?

This sounds a bit like Runequest, There's not really a distinction between martial and caster because everyone can (and probably will) get both magic and mundane skills. Anyone can learn a spell such as Bladesharp which gives +5% to weapon skill and +1 damage per point (though Bladesharp 4 is...

    D&D 5E (2014) The Fighter/Martial Problem (In Depth Ponderings)

To give my perspective on why earlier editions were better balanced than 3e and 5e. A 1st level Magic User has one spell at 1st level (two for a specialist). The saving throw of a HD creature against that spell is 17+. It'll probably land on most of a group (it's 19 for sub-1 HD creatures like...

D&D 5E (2014) You Cant Fix The Class Imbalances IMHO

So I suppose the question becomes, isn't that what 3e did to earlier editions? And in the process made the imbalance that certainly existed in 1e and BECM and 2e significantly worse than before? Anyway, making the balance perfect might not be possible. Making it better - because it WAS better...

D&D 5E (2014) WOTC Possibly Removing "Druids" for Religious/Cultural Sensitivity Reasons

Exorcisms, praying for people to recover from wounds/illness, prayers that are supposed to halt or reverse curses - modern Catholicism may not like to do these things but they're in older prayer books (I'm not familiar enough with old Orthodox groups to say whether that's true there).

D&D 5E (2014) WOTC Possibly Removing "Druids" for Religious/Cultural Sensitivity Reasons

But that's a pretty solid description of what priests do too, interceding with things beyond the normal world (whether ghosts or demons or other beings from beyond the world) and various prayers to cure/create sickness or various curses (not alwaays distinguishable from illnesses). I'd be...

    D&D 5E (2014) The Fighter/Martial Problem (In Depth Ponderings)

There are plenty of examples of the same effect with pre-modern weaponry. Having danger around, whether it's from a flintlock musket or a bow or something else that's only shooting occasionally will do just as good a job.

    D&D 5E (2014) The Fighter/Martial Problem (In Depth Ponderings)

Being shot at is quite a distraction, makes it a lot harder to do pretty much anything as effectively as you would in normal circumstances. That's not theory; that's based on evidence assembled by militaries since before Napoleon was a general. Equally, someone trying to hit you in melee isn't...

D&D 5E (2024) How to reign in full casters for 1D&D? Maybe remove 6th to 9th level spells as a Variant rule.

A great many of the problems we're repeatedly discussing were issues in 3.x which had pretty pure Vancian casting. I don't think that recommends the solution you're proposing.

Would you play a TTRPG that used Meters instead of Feet?

That was my first thought. And it's sensible for any SF RPG that makes a pretence at "realism" because I'll be ****ed if I want to work with feet/second//second and miles and psi (pounds per square inch not psionics) when I'm trying to keep the game going and not waste time with calculations...

    D&D 5E (2024) 4/26 Playtest: The Fighter

If it's up there listed at 11th level, it's not likely that there'll be other abilities added to the Fighter at 11th level. It won't matter how mediocre it is, it'll be something the Fighter gets at higher levels just like the Wizard gets more abilities at higher levels.

D&D 5E (2024) How to reign in full casters for 1D&D? Maybe remove 6th to 9th level spells as a Variant rule.

Drop the non-casters, bring more casters. Suddenly you've got loads more spells to solve the extra encounters.
