Spelljammer Fish out of water campaign - Spelljammer

Yeah, I can see why that might be a problem. If I ever did put enough material together to actually run this, the people I would be playing it with are all pretty new to D&D so they wouldn't really have too many preconceived notions of how a "normal" game would play out. But you're 100% right...

Spelljammer Fish out of water campaign - Spelljammer

Yeah, I was thinking that it didn't necessarily have to be a spaceship, but I'd want to keep that sci-fi element to it so it's still a major headf**k for the characters! I guess the tricky part is then the fact that there would then be significant differences in the technology levels in play.

Spelljammer Fish out of water campaign - Spelljammer

Cool! I'm sorry to say that I hadn't actually heard of him until your post. I haven't really read much sci-fi but I've recently been getting into it more and more (just reading Flowers for Algernon at the moment). Will have to look into these for inspiration!

Spelljammer Fish out of water campaign - Spelljammer

Thanks all! To be honest, it doesn't necessarily have to be Spelljammer, just any setting that allows for the space travel side of things. I don't really know enough about SJ to know whether or not I like it. Can anyone think of a good reason for the "fantasy village in a biodome on a giant...

Spelljammer Fish out of water campaign - Spelljammer

Haha yeah that one! :D I'd love to run it but I'm really rubbish at actually putting my ideas together. I can come up with decent enough hooks but then when it comes to actually getting anything coherent together I run out of steam (Like all the comic book scripts I've written about 2 pages for...

Spelljammer Fish out of water campaign - Spelljammer

I've just been looking into Spelljammer stuff for the first time ever and I thought of what I think could be quite a cool idea for a campaign using the "fish out of water" trope. The key is that you'd start a Spelljammer campaign, but let the players believe they were just going to be playing a...

D&D 5E (2014) How do you feel about the Forgotten Realms?

I initially got into D&D via the Baldur's Gate/Icewind Dale games and the Forgotten Realms novels so I think I'll always have a fondness for it!

D&D 5E (2014) What technology do you own that you are willing to bring to the table?

I'm not a luddite but I find that any form of technology at the table is way more unwieldy than just using pen and paper.

D&D 5E (2014) What are your world Races?

I would also like to hear more about this. All these amazing ideas are really making me wish I had more time to put stuff like this together! As it stands I barely have enough time to put together even a basic dungeon crawl (and even then I need to pull help from these boards...

    D&D 5E (2014) Help me write a tomb crawl!

Oh yeah, I really like the idea of having the two magical fields entangled. It really fits with the idea that the adventurers are there to cleanse and restore the place!

    D&D 5E (2014) Help me write a tomb crawl!

I decided to go with Zaruthustran's amazing idea and I've started putting together the encounters room by room. I've decided that the big evil they've locked away used to be a human priest of the order who was transformed into an efreeti in his quest for power (I may have watched Aladdin...

    D&D 5E (2014) Help me write a tomb crawl!

Thanks for the recommendations! Astrosicebear, while I really like that trap idea, it's venturing more into the Egyptian side of things than I'd like to go. I know I mentioned including a mummy, I'm not thinking of the straight up sarcophagus bound Egyptian mummy and thinking more of the...

    D&D 5E (2014) Help me write a tomb crawl!

I want to put together 3rd level Arabian-themed hack and slash type adventure for some new players. The basic concept is that they're part of a mercenary guild who have been hired to clear out an ancient lost temple of (insert relevant deity here), which has just been discovered by the local...

    D&D 5E (2014) Pick-and-Choose World Building

I'm going to try to incorporate non-evil orcs and maybe goblinoids as well. I like the idea of having some tribes of them that just go about their business without the whole marauding side of things. We're playing in Forgotten Realms so I'm not quite sure how to incorporate this. Obviously...

    NPC portraits

Where do people pick up portraits for their NPCs (if you use them at all). My group has decided that pictures help them visualise what's going on. Is there anywhere you know of that has a good diverse mix of NPC portraits online that can be used for this? Everything from barkeepers to holy...

    D&D 5E (2014) Battlemats?

Anything more than about 3 or 4 enemies and I start to lose track of what's going on so I pretty much always have to use a gridded map. I like the idea of playing without but I don't think it's feasible really. I know a lot of people say that you lose immersion playing with minis but I find...

    D&D 5E (2014) Lost wagon of Phandelver

I'm DMing the starter set and my party just tied the oxen up. They weren't in the goblin hideout for that long so the oxen were fine out there. They're all newbie RPers so I didn't want to get too bogged down in how the oxen were going to get dealt with!
