    D&D 4E 4E PrRC ~v2.7~ FINAL UPDATE May 29.08

I'm curious...why does everyone assume that the Wizard only gets 3 trained skills? The D&D XP Wizard has four trained skills, and I've always assumed that "Skill Training: Stealth" just adds Stealth to the Wizard's list of class skills. Doesn't it seem likely that the Wizard gets the same...

    Pre-Alpha, really?

From the front page: So WotC claims that a big part of their 4th edition business plan is built around a series of online applications that make up part of D&D Insider. This is something that they (nor the software development team they've contracted for these tools) have any significant...

    Help me capture my party.

Let me just start off by saying that capture/escape scenarios can be a lot of fun. But they're difficult to pull off without alienating your players before the fun part (for them) starts. If you have a good group, and they trust you to make the game fun, and they're okay with the occasional...

D&D: Insider Tools - will they succeed?

I searched through ENworld's "Unofficial Dungeons & Dragons 4th Edition Info Page" and Wizards' own D&D Insider fact sheet. The only mention of Radiant Machine on either is in an answer to a question about QA testing. "Radiant Machine" also gets no hits on the entire WotC website. I've read...

D&D: Insider Tools - will they succeed?

I'm pretty much sold on 4e. From the few crunchy details we've seen, I know that I'll at least be buying the core books in June. The D&D Insider "content" that's supposed to replace Dungeon and Dragon magazines, I'm much more skeptical of, but there are several other threads discussing that...

    Why Buy?

I like some of the changes that have been proposed in 4e, and am a little skeptical of others. But the real reason I'll be upgrading is that almost everyone in my group is already sold on the idea.

PCs using their abilities - a favor to the party?

In my experience, this kind of attitude happens most often when a player is forced to play a cleric when he doesn't want to. Or when he plays with groups that don't pay attention to basic tactics, and can't get through a simple combat without someone constantly healing them. When the party...

Bored with knowing what will happen next

If you want something easy, Robin Laws has suggested something like: When the players try something unexpected or investigate something that you hadn't thought of, and you don't know what the result should be, roll a d6: 1-2: The action/investigation should have the most reasonable result...

    E6: The Game Inside D&D

Re: Capstone feats It seems odd to me that the cleric capstone feats have requirements in addition to just "Cleric 6" when no other class-specific capstone feat does.

    The big announcement: 4dventure

When I saw that Eric was posting to this thread, I just had to add my 2 cents. I was happy playing the 2e grognard role when I first heard that Wizards was working on 3e. Then I found that stinkin' Eric Noah blog. And I kept finding myself reacting to his different updates, "Hey that's a good...

E6: The Game Inside D&D (with PDFs!)

I gotta agree. I've never been a fan of new feats meant to "balance" single class characters. D&D characters are inherently unbalanced at different levels, and multiclassing only adds to the problem. Introducing an artificial level cap just highlights the balance issues at a certain point...

    E6 NPC's

This assumes that all those NPC's are fighting monsters and saving the world just like the PC's. I'd assume that xp gain for your typical working stiff generic priest would be considerably lower. Two more quick points: - E6 is a lot less "Epic" when every small town has a level 6 NPC or two...

    E6 NPC's

A couple of quick questions: - I thought the idea of E6 is that 6th level characters are the "Big Damn Heroes" of the setting. Should a generic town priest be so high level? - I also notice that you use PC classes for non-hero NPC's. Wouldn't an adept be a better choice for a generic town...

E6: The Game Inside D&D (with PDFs!)

Welcome to ENWorld. First off, I'd point out that this system isn't theoretical. It's been playtested and found to be enjoyable (by at least one group). While it may not be up your alley, it's working for some people. As you say, to each his own. If this were a homebrewed game system, I may...

    System recommendations for modern weirdness?

Assuming your players are fairly mature, I don't think you could go wrong with Unknown Armies. It's pretty rules-light, so it should be easy to pick up and not get in the way of spooking your players out. If your players prefer something crunchier, I second (third? fourth?) Savage Worlds...

ry's Threats, Rewards, Assets, and Problems (TRAPs)

I was about to type a question: isn't it ok for the DM to introduce non-interactive elements to establish context? But then I thought about it, and I see that it'd be just as easy to establish a context with interactive elements. And those elements should/would be more interesting to the...

E6: The Game Inside D&D (with PDFs!)

Quick question. If a level 6 multi-classed character took this feat, which class list does he use when determining class skills vs. cross-class?

What if the higher powers vanished?

I was tossing around some ideas with my gaming group today, and one seemed to generate a lot of conversation: Take a generic D&D setting with deities who grant divine powers to clerics, paladins, and the like. They provide guidance (either directly or indirectly) to their favored mortals. Now...

E6: The Game Inside D&D (new revision)

Do we round up or down for characters with odd caster levels? Also, wouldn't these feats give bards access to 3rd level spells (which they can't have at 6th level normally)? Maybe specify that characters can only take spells/slots that they already have access to? I love the idea of the...
