Was AD&D1 designed for game balance?

Man! This make me hate house rules even more. I don't think I even came close to any of these as a player of 1e.

Was AD&D1 designed for game balance?

Thanks, I was getting feeling. All of the games I played in 1e used that method. Of course I had 3 DM for 1e. I never DMed 1e. I played it but never ran it because my game of choice was Rolemaster. I could wing it with out any prep at all for 10 hours straight and have my players beg for more.

What do you like in your RPG?

Just because there is an intellectual elite that that every thing as a special meaning or must be some type of intellectual essay. Take Star Wars it is just a good old fashion space opera. There is not suppose to being any hidden meanings in it. While I don't mine allegorical based stories...

Was AD&D1 designed for game balance?

Because for many of us with out any Dragon Mags, or other ways of learning any thing but from the DMG and PH only had what was in them. I don't remember any thing in either that says any thing but roll 3d6 once for each stat in order. My first group was also one of those rare ones who did not...

    Yay Failing Book Stores?

So said the cart merchant about the newfangled store building. Change is normal. Humans will all was go for the most economical means. Competition will be around as long as it is not stopped by artificial means. Some specialty store that provide things that are not wanted in large quantities...

    Yay Failing Book Stores?

Yep and all of my gaming stuff is bough at my game store. But big over priced books stores that control the market by the buying power or little mom and papa stores that use to control the market but limiting what they would carry is not worth the extra pennies.

    Yay Failing Book Stores?

I blame the internet. My family buys less than 1 out of 20 books in a brick and mortar store. Amazon.com gets most of our business.

Was AD&D1 designed for game balance?

I have been trying your approach of hidden and other wise protected treasure with 4e packets. It is simple and quick. I have pre chosen/random rolled all of the wealth for level. To prevent the (must find all syndrome), I am using an alternate treasure approach. There will be a few extra...

Was AD&D1 designed for game balance?

I would have to disagree about the percentage of bad DM but only because you had more experienced good DM at the start as a percentage of the DM's. I would say that the CR system was the Monster level system improved by adding more weight to the non hd strengths and weakness of a monster. 4e...

What precentage to they make up of your Campaign?

1 to 3 I can understand for others but: 1) Modules actually means more prep time for me. 2) Half of dozen of one and 6 of another as I don't do cons or have multiple groups. 3) A good history or SF book does the same at lower cost in time and money. 4) Nope the greatest line is: "That...

Giving out XP based on amount of damage sustained?

It really would not take that long. Every thing but the damage per encounter could be calculated once each level. Heck you could even make a table for the damage taken percentage. It would only have to be rough. Now I did not say I have or would use it. ;) It was just put out as a...

Pathfinder 1E WotC desperately needs to learn from Paizo and Privateer Press

Yea, I just point out the link and read the wrong :blush:column when I responded. I think the poll has no use full data or information for this thread. Just because they use or don't use adventures does not tell us how much of the fluff they use. It can be I use every thing in the module to I...

Giving out XP based on amount of damage sustained?

Rolemaster, the more complex version that MERP came from taught me how to use rule like this. Here is a more complex suggestion. Damage taken can not exceed 50% of the normal base (The rest is given normally). The amount gain is found by the following formula (most of it can be calculated...

Was AD&D1 designed for game balance?

I would not presume to say what is style was beyond 1e (where he wrote a lot of statements, articles, ect on or about his view about gaming. I not sure how close he actually came. I don't think he achieved it to his satisfaction but I can argue that as that is more of an impression then any...

Was AD&D1 designed for game balance?

Actually after thinking a while I think trying and failing (but coming real close) is the most likely. Why? Simple he had no model or data to work with except what he learned at the games he and his friends played. There was very little feed back. He took the closest model he could find (see...

Was AD&D1 designed for game balance?

While reading this a third possibility accrued to me. Gygax could have tired to design for balance but knew that he had not achieved his goal. He came as close as he could or as close as he wanted. He might have wanted a close but not fully balance to allow for other playing styles...

Pathfinder 1E WotC desperately needs to learn from Paizo and Privateer Press

How true, I wonder how much of that was just fluff are was other stuff. Like changing encounters, traps, ect. I know it would vary and to get a close to accurate picture to that level of detail it would have to be a professionally done poll.

Pathfinder 1E WotC desperately needs to learn from Paizo and Privateer Press

Sure, but it messes well of what we know about sell figures for modules/adventures. I will not take the numbers as solid facts but a nice indicator with other information as being in the ball park.

Was AD&D1 designed for game balance?

Gygax wrote OD&D because he wanted something new. If he knew every thing about what he wanted he would have written AD&D. He didn't he created a new game. Saw the possibilities and then added to it. Eventually he got AD&D. Later he made other changes and created other games. It is a natural...
