Smallest rule, biggest change: Magic Edition

Idea 1: Loosely adaped from 2e era Ravenloft: Certain spells work normally, but a check of some sort is required when casting. If the check succeeds, nothing special beyond the spell being cast happens. If the check fails, something bad happens. That's rather vague, but customization is king...

Greybeards & Grognards 2 "Who Dies" and My Life In Gaming Editions.

That sounds rather strong and hostile, which is not the tone I was hoping for. I did not say 2e was absolute perfection, especially once all the handbooks and Player's Option books were added on, and 3.x is absolute crap for droping so much of the good stuff from the past. I may think it, but...

An Examination of Differences between Editions

One aspect of 2e that I really liked were all the sections highlighted in blue and explicitly labelled as optional extra rules. 3.x needs more of this, for example, the whole Attacks of Oppurtunity thing. I said a lot more about the subject of past edititons vs. the current one, here, but I...

Demonomicon - after the big 14?

Since a movie involves a written script at some stage, file that under literary.

Demonomicon - after the big 14?

I voted for Abraxas because he's got a cool real world mythological, rleligious, magickal, and literary backgound and minimal D&D development.

Greybeards & Grognards 2 "Who Dies" and My Life In Gaming Editions.

The first one didn't really work out the way that I had hoped for. I think a lot of it is sleep deprivation while writing the initial essay. I think this one is better, I hope you do too: Grey Beards & Grognards 2 Who Dies (And My Life In Gaming Editions)? By JustiN Orion Neal Taylor I am...

April Fools issues (Humor in your games)

I once ran an adventure where the monsters were things like Death Sheep, Killer Spruce Trees, and Chocolate Golems. I had fun. So did the player. It might not work for everyone though.

    Just Imagine You Creating..

I almost always end up doing things like this anyway when I'm dealing with a game with a lot of setting, metaplot, or established conventions built in to either the game itself or strongly held by any fan community discussing it on the internet. A couple of things I've done, however...

    A Question About Eric Noah

Thanks for the answer. What was the article in 208 about in general terms? 208 is the one that I'm missing from about #203-212. Oh and thanks everyone else too. I was just sharing some of this information about Eric Noah with my friend who doesn't come to this board. HE thought it was cool.

Freaking Awesome 3rd Party Books That Don't Get Enough Praise

I like the first Creature Collection that Sword & Sorcery/ White Wolf put out. The CRs are a bit off because it's such an early product, but the concepts are good.

What didn't people like about Gygax's Greyhawk?

I gotta agree with the trees thing I picked up a copy of the Guide to the World of Greyhawk boxed set at a garage sale somewhere in my middle school to high school days, and that was at least eight years ago. I still haven't read either one of the booklets all the way through. Part of it is...

    A Question About Eric Noah

Okay, the EN in EN world stands for Eric Noah, right? Well, the other day I was looking through my old Dragons and I saw in article in Dragon #212 written by an Eric Noah. I forgot the title, but it was about how to learn to be a better DM by noticing how good fiction is put together. Is...

    TSR Q&A with Gary Gygax

Another question for you Gary (Again, I hope it isn't something that has been asked before): In the early version of the Dungeoncraft column in Dragon magazine (might have been around when they got you to start writing the Up on A Soap Box series again or a year or month or two before), the...

    TSR Q&A with Gary Gygax

Hi Gary, I apologize, if this has been asked before, but were any of the unique monsters in the orginal Monster Manual 2 intended to be lesser deities as the Deities and Demigods cyclopedia says the Archdevils and Demon Princes and Princes of Elemental Evil are? In my campaign, I've always gone...

You Don't Talk Shop at the Dinner Table

My most recent group is composed largely of agnostics, atheists, pagans, and similar folks with a relaxed take on religion. We also all tend towards the liberal end of the political spectrum. Most of us would rather game than talk about real world issues.

Whould you buy a system-free setting?

Maybe It really depends on the setting. Back in high school I saw a blurb for an open to any system Pirates of Dark Water RPG setting in the War Games West catalog. I kind of wanted it, but never bought it. I would have wanted it because I like Pirates of Dark water, though. An original...

    Greybeards & Grognards 1

I totally love that line. True and acknowledged within the first post, kinda. Probably true. The whole thing started in an ill-considered sleep-deprived moment. Thanks. I shall.

    Greybeards & Grognards 1

Just like geek used to be the word the chearleaders and jocks caste used on D&D kids in high school and now it's used as a badge of honor by those same D&D kids in life past high school.

    Greybeards & Grognards 1

I believe that we are both right. The definition I give seems to be accepted around wotc's D&D boards. Dictionary I trust for most gamer slang RPGs are a bastard-child mutant of wargames, so it is not surprising that the etymology of an RPG slang word includes history as a wargame slang word.
